In Search of the American Center
On both sides of the Atlantic, if you tried to build a consensus politics based around what voters actually want, it would be very moderately culturally conservative and very moderately economically liberal, and it would sit low in the upper left quadrant of our chart — the place where Trump won voters who had previously voted for Obama. But on both sides of the Atlantic, if you sought to place the elite consensus on the same chart, it be much closer to the emptiest of quadrants — the land of austerity and open borders, free trade and the permanent sexual revolution, the Simpson-Bowles plan and Emmanuel Macron.

Clarence Thomas Attacks Civil Asset Forfeiture, Lower Court Follows His Lead
In March the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear a case filed by a Texas woman fighting for the return of over $200,000 in cash that the police seized from her family. Although neither Lisa Olivia Leonard nor any of her relatives were ever charged with any underlying crime connected to the cash, the state's sweeping asset forfeiture laws allowed the authorities to take the money. The Supreme Court offered no explanation when it refused to hear Leonard v. Texas. But one member of the Court did speak up in protest. In a statement respecting the denial of certiorari, Justice Clarence Thomas made it clear that in his view modern asset forfeiture law is fundamentally incompatible with the U.S. Constitution. Yesterday, one of the most influential federal appellate courts in the country—the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit—signaled its agreement with Thomas' assessment in a notable decision in favor of an innocent couple fighting for the return of $17,900 in cash seized by the police.

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization's (NATO) F-16 supersonic multirole fighter attempted to get close to Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu's plane over neutral Baltic waters but was chased away by a Russian jet, a Sputnik correspondent reported Wednesday. Shoigu was en route to the westernmost Russian city of Kaliningrad when the F-16 attempted to make an approach. Russia's Sukhoi Su-27 fighter, one of the aircraft escorting Shoigu's plane, then displayed its weapons, prompting the F-16 to retreat.

NATO F-16's Maneuver: Unfriendly Signal to Russian Leadership or Routine Task?

USS Ford Supercarrier Might Ditch Shock Testing Before Deployment
The US Navy’s Ford-class aircraft carrier will not be required to go through shock trials, if the House Armed Services Committee gets its way. The 2018 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) is getting marked up by lawmakers who seem to believe the US carrier fleet is stretched so thin that it needs the USS Gerald Ford operational as soon as possible, Defense News reports.

Saudi Hijinks, US Policy Stinks
The whimsical Saudi rulers are playing musical chairs again, with the king's favorite son jumping the succession queue in what some observers have called a "soft coup" to become heir to the oil kingdom throne. The medieval-like House of Saud has always been a lynchpin in US foreign policy for the Middle East. More so under President Donald Trump who has struck up a chummy relationship with the young Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. This relationship is like the blind leading the blind. No wonder US policy is fast becoming a disaster for the restive region.

Why Turkey's Deployment of Troops to Qatar Could Prove to Be the 'Wrong Step'
Ankara's decision to send a group of Turkish servicemen to a Qatari base is the wrong move because it was not caused by a real threat to Turkey's security and does not reflect the country's national interests, Turkish political analyst Murat Bilhan told Sputnik.
