These early day skaters use the frozen Columbia River as an ice rink. The old Columbia River Bridge, completed in 1908, is in the background. That winter the temperature hovered around 20 to 30 degrees below zero for three weeks in February. The river froze over solid and teams of horses pulling wheat-laden wagons crossed it.
