Vietnamese Christians Celebrate Release of Two Believers
In North-central Vietnam, Christians spent the Christmas holidays celebrating the release of two believers at the center of a major conflict between the Catholic Church and the Vietnamese government. The two Christians, Ngo Van Khoi and Nguyen Van Hai were released after being arrested six months ago for an altercation with plain clothes police officers. Their arrest sparked protest by the Vinh parish that led to a violent crack down by Vietnamese authorities. Across Vietnam the government continues to highly regulate and suppress the growth of Christianity, taking especially harsh measures against ethnic Christians in rural areas and Christian groups that organize any type of mass protest.

Malaysian Police Interrogate Priest for “Sedition” as Pressure Mounts on Christians
Malaysian authorities this week interrogated Father Andrew Lawrence, editor of Catholic weekly The Herald, as wells as dozens of others in an apparent attempt to intimidate Christians closely involved in the "Allah" controversy. The Herald is at the center of a court case spearheaded by the Malaysian government which recently ruled that it is illegal for non-Muslims to use the Arabic word for God, "Allah." Late last week police seized hundreds of copies of Malay language Bibles and briefly arrested two members of the Malaysian Bible Society. Father Lawrence spoke out against the seizure, which may have led to the current investigation into his acts as "sedition." These alarming developments are part of a long-term trend of increasing radicalization the Muslim-majority Southeast Asian state.

Connection between Fulani Muslims and Boko Haram Militants Continues
International Christian Concern (ICC) has learned that at least 30 Christians, including women, children and the elderly, were brutally murdered in an attack on a Christian village in central Nigeria. Islamic gunmen, believed to be from the Fulani ethnic group, opened fire on residents of Shonong village located in Nigeria’s Plateau State, killing those unfortunate enough to be in the village at the time of the attack.

British Member of Parliament Highlights Asia Bibi and the Abuse of Blasphemy Laws in Pakistan
In early December, a Member of the British Parliament brought up the case of blasphemy victim Asia Bibi and the abuse of Pakistan's controversial blasphemy laws in a broader debate over the persecution of Christians worldwide. This Christmas marked the fifth holiday season Asia Bibi has spent on death row after being falsely accused and convicted of blasphemy in June 2009. This British MP called on Pakistan to immediately release Asia Bibi and to start making reforms to the blasphemy laws so that they cannot be so readily abused by radicals in Pakistan.
