Family of Imprisoned North Korea Missionary Shocked by ex-NBA Star Comments
The family of imprisoned Christian missionary Kenneth Bae have expressed their deep hurt at comments made by ex-NBA star Dennis Rodman to CNN in an interview yesterday. The former professional basketball player grew highly agitated when asked about the imprisoned missionary, eventually cursing at the CNN interviewer and implying that Kenneth somehow deserved to be imprisoned in North Korea. The missionary has been detained for over a year and was probably arrested due to his Christian work inside the country. North Korea is the world's most repressive regime when it comes to Christianity and has imprisoned as many as 70,000 Christians in concentration camps.

Pastors Daughter Released from Detention in China, 13 Remain Behind Bars
13 Christians remain unlawfully behind bars in Central China's Henan Province despite international media attention and an attempt by lawyers to obtain their release. The 13 are members of the Nanle Country Christian Church and include the churches pastor, Zhang Shaojie, who was arrested in November. The case is highly unusual, as authorities typically do not target members of official government sanctioned "Three-Self" churches. The arrest of the believers and the ensuing harassment of the churches members may be related to Pastor Shaojie's activism in the community and a dispute the church has with the local government over a land issue.

Indonesia: On Religious Intolerance, President Pressured to Back Up Rhetoric With Action
Indonesian President Yudhoyono's recent comments during a Christmas celebration calling upon religious leaders to promote tolerance around the country is being criticized by many who see government inaction as the key issue. Last year Human Rights Watch published a report condemning a rising wave of intolerance towards Indonesia's religious minorities, including Christians, that is largely being overlooked by the federal government. One striking example is the number of churches that have been forced to cease holding services thanks to pressure from radical Islamic groups and local governments. In 2012, the federal government did little to stop the forced closure of at least 50 churches across the country.

Christian Persecution Spikes in China Over Christmas Holiday
Christians across China experienced greater levels of harassment and intimidation last month as the Christmas holiday approached, reports ChinaAid. From detaining house church believers in Shaanxi Province to shutting down church service in Henan, authorities stepped up their repression of Christians who refuse to worship in government controlled "Three-Self" churches. In one case in Sichuan Province Christians gathering for a Christmas service were tear-gassed by police breaking up the event. ICC regularly reports on and provides assistance to victims of religious persecution in China.

At Least 30 Christians Feared Dead Following Attack on Village in Nigeria
Authorities in Nigeria fear that at lease 30 people were killed following an attack by suspected Islamic extremists on a Christian village in central Nigeria. Attackers believed to be Fulani Muslims connected to the terrorist group Boko Haram, raided the Christian village of Shonong on Monday, January 6, and opened fire on Christian residents. The true death toll is yet to be announced, but so far the remains of 30 people have been recovered.

Reported Christian ‘Martyr’ Deaths Double in 2013
A newly released study documents that more than 2,100 Christians were killed as “martyr’s” in 2013. The greatest increase was seen in Syria. With a reported 1,213 deaths, Syria alone eclipsed the global total of 1,201 from 2012. The report is intentionally narrow in its definition of “martyr” and tries to distinguish between Christians killed in the midst of broader conflict and those killed explicitly for their faith. Nine of the ten worst persecuting countries are Muslim-majority states. As a whole, the report finds that “Islamist extremism is the worst persecutor of the worldwide church.”

Egypt’s Copts Celebrate Christmas amid Political Uncertainty
2013 was another year full of significant change in Egypt. One year ago the Muslim Brotherhood was in power and Mohammed Morsi, representing its political wing, was president of the country. Over the year, dozens and dozens of churches were attacked, Christian’s shops, homes, and property was destroyed. Even the seat of Coptic Christianity, St. Mark’s Cathedral, came under attack. Now one year later, Morsi is behind bars and set to stand trial. The interim government, supported by the military is back in control. What the future will hold for the country – and for its Christians – is still unclear.

Pakistani Christians Seek Asylum in Sri Lanka
In the face of increasing extremism and persecution, many Pakistani Christians are fleeing Pakistan in search of refuge. Many of these Christians are seeking asylum in Sri Lanka claiming asylum based on religious persecution grounds. According to the Catholic Church in Sri Lanka, over 600 Pakistani Christians are currently seeking asylum. These asylum seekers do not have the right to work and depend on the Catholic Church for support. Unfortunately, Sri Lanka is becoming more and more religiously intolerant. With the rise of Buddhist Nationalists, many Buddhists in Sri Lanka believe religions like Christianity are foreign and have no place in Sri Lanka's society. In 2013 alone, Christians were attacked over 65 times by Buddhists Nationalists. Please pray for Sri Lanka and the future of these Pakistani Christians.

Christians in Nigeria Attacked by Extremists during New Year’s Church Service
Boko Haram and other Islamic extremists in Nigeria use the Christmas and New Year's holidays as a time to target and terrorize the Christian population of northern and central Nigeria. Boko Haram, whose expressed goal is to create a purely Islamic state in Nigeria's northern regions, has been encouraging Fulani Muslims to attack Christians in an effort to drive them out of what Boko Haram claims to be Muslim lands. On December 31, three Christians were killed in an attack on a church service in central Nigeria. In the attack, two adults and one child were killed when extremists opened fire on an open air church service. Please pray for the victims and their families as they start 2014 in grief and sorrow.
