Multiple Wildfires Burning Near Banks Lake

GRANT COUNTY, Wash. - Multiple wildfires in northeast Washington are forcing evacuations for homeowners near Banks Lake. The Grant County Sheriff's Department has confirmed with KHQ that they are conducting Level 1 Evacuations near Electric City, while Douglas County has conducted Level 3 evacuations on about 35 homes along State Route 174. Unconfirmed reports say that Lincoln County has conducted Level 3 evacuations as well.

So far there doesn't appear to be any structures that have burned, but firefighters are setting up an aggressive attack on these fires. Winds in the area are fueling the flames.

GRANT COUNTY -- Authorities asked homeowners to pack up and head out after two fires sparked near Grand Coulee.

Multiple agencies are battling the The Barker Canyon Fire and the Leahy Junction Fire. Haze from the fire forced crews to shut down State Route 174 through the area.

Early Monday, the Barker Canyon Fire was estimated to be around 18,000 acres and burned mostly sage and grass. The Leahy Junction Fire burned near Coulee Dam, on the boarders of Douglas and Grant counties. It also scorched mostly sage and grass. At last check, crews estimated that fire burned 12,000 acres. A viewer in Electric City tells KREM 2 News fire burned over a hillside by Banks Lake. Experts said both fires were sparked by lightning.

Crews expected wind to pick up across the area and said the fires will likely spread. Helicopters were brought in to help crews get the upper hand on the fires.

As crews work to get a handle on the fires, they said evacuations were underway for 60 homes near Coulee Dam. A Level 1 evacuation order was put in place for Grand Coulee residents living near the canal through town. A Level 2 evacuation order was put in place for homeowners north of the canal to Highway 174. Experts asked homeowners in the area to put sprinklers on their roof and in their yards. There was no report of any injuries.

The National Weather Service issued a red flag warning for central and eastern Washington. Warm and very dry conditions will precede a cold front that will bring strong winds through Monday.
