As the US grapples with history and becomes increasingly racially and culturally aware -- with ethnic studies curriculums in schools, recognition of the dangers of White supremacy, and growing social justice movements -- more people are acknowledging the keepers of the land now known as North America: Native Americans. Land acknowledgments are a way for non-Indigenous people to honor and pay respect to the Indigenous people who lived and took care of the land before the arrival of White Europeans, who often used violence to take control of the lands while forcing survivors onto reservations. The acknowledgments are becoming increasingly common, with even the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade taking part. And now, there are apps that will easily tell you whose land you're on. One of the most popular ones is run by Native Land Digital, a Canadian non-profit. The organization has a website and app where users can enter an address and see which Indigenous nations lived on that land.

Interior reverses course on tribal ownership of portion of Missouri river
The Interior Department has reversed a Trump administration decision determining that a portion of the Missouri River was under the jurisdiction of the state of North Dakota rather than a Native American reservation. Trump officials had concluded a part of the river that flows through the Berthold Indian Reservation was within the state’s jurisdiction rather than that of the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nation, the reservation’s three affiliated tribes. “The previous administration’s M-Opinion overturned decades of existing precedent holding that the Missouri riverbed belonged to the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara (MHA) Nation,” an Interior spokesperson said in a statement. “Today’s action will allow us to review the matter and ensure the Interior Department is upholding its trust and treaty obligations in accordance with the law.”

The wooden Church of the Descent of the Holy Spirit in Bucharest’s Alexandru Ioan Cuza Park was found to be covered in graffiti on Friday. The vandals desecrated the icons on the outer church walls with purple spray paint and wrote “LGBT,” “#BLM,” “ANTiFA,” “BE GAY DO CRIME,” and painted an anarchy symbol together with a crossed-out swastika and a crossed-out cross. Romanian Patriarchate spokesman Vasile Bănescu described the desecration that took place Thursday night as a new blow to the tolerance so loudly claimed by various ideological groups. “The tolerance hysterically claimed by the ideological cores of LGBT, more recently BLM or ANTIFA, strikes again. And they do what they know best: They vandalize, defile, spit out grotesque messages and, in outbursts of supreme intelligence, write their name on all the fences, including on the walls of churches,” he said.
