Squirrel tests positive for the bubonic plague in Colorado
Public health officials have announced that a squirrel in Colorado has tested positive for the bubonic plague. "Symptoms of plague may include sudden onset of high fever, chills, headache, nausea and extreme pain and swelling of lymph nodes, occurring within two to seven days after exposure. Plague can be effectively treated with antibiotics when diagnosed early. Anyone experiencing these symptoms should consult a physician," said JCPH [Jefferson County Public Health].

Documentary on legendary Chief Tzouhalem to be filmed in Cowichan
A film crew will soon be in the Cowichan Valley to conclude a feature documentary on the Valley’s iconic Cowichan Chief Tzouhalem. Leslie Bland, from Less Bland Productions, an award-winning film and television company located in Victoria, said the documentary will examine the near-mythic figure of Chief Tzouhalem through interviews and creative re-enactments. Chief Tzouhalem was a Quamichan warrior who, in 1844, led a historically documented attack on Fort Victoria, among other legendary exploits.

Judge denies bail for Ghislaine Maxwell after she pleads not guilty in Jeffrey Epstein sex crimes case
A federal judge denied bail for Ghislaine Maxwell, the British socialite accused of facilitating the sexual abuse of young girls by her former boyfriend Jeffrey Epstein, the now-dead investor. Epstein, who killed himself, was a former friend of Presidents Donald Trump and Bill Clinton, as well as of Britain’s Prince Andrew. Lawyers for Maxwell had proposed she be released on $5 million bond. Prosecutors want her detained without bail, calling her an extreme flight risk. “Not guilty,” Maxwell said before a judge scheduled her trial to begin on July 12, 2021.

This Republican governor just showed the receipts to the coronavirus 'herd immunity' crowd
Tate Reeves is the Republican governor of Mississippi. He's also an economics major who worked for a bank prior to getting into politics. In other words, he knows numbers. Which brings me to a series of tweets from Reeves earlier this week in which he systematically destroyed the argument that everyone should just get Covid-19 now so that we build up a herd immunity. (The geniuses behind that theory of the case are some of the same ones pushing for young people to have coronavirus parties so everyone there gets exposed.) ... Reeves isn't the only Republican governor using logic -- and data -- to help limit the recent surges in the virus. On Wednesday, Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey (R) announced a statewide mask mandate. "We're almost to the point where our hospital ICUs are overwhelmed," she said. "Folks, the numbers just do not lie." Unfortunately, not all Republican governors are being as reasonable. Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt (R), who has resisted mandating mask-wearing in his state, announced Wednesday that he had tested positive for coronavirus, the first governor in the country to do so. "I was pretty shocked that I was the first governor to get it," Stitt said. He shouldn't be.

Washington state extends freeze on phases of reopening until at least July 28
Washington counties cannot move to the next phases of reopening for at least another two weeks, and it's possible that openings could be rolled back. As coronavirus cases continue to increase across the state, Gov. Jay Inslee extended a pause Tuesday on reopening the economy to July 28 and warned there was a “significant chance” restrictions could be reinstated if the state doesn't get a handle on rising coronavirus cases.

Caribbean Slavery Reparations Urged for Church of England
The Church of England should play a role in discussions about reparations for Caribbean slavery, says Sir Hilary Beckles, chair of the Reparations Commission of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), a cooperative league of fifteen West Indian nations. Beckles, the vice chancellor of the University of the West Indies and a noted historian of Caribbean slavery, called for the church to participate in an upcoming reparations summit at a press conference on July 6, according to reports by the Nassau, Bahamas-based Tribune.

Unlimited Government: Central Banks and Federal Spending during the Corona Crisis
The rising unemployment and missed mortgage and rental payments will be linked to the government-mandated shutdowns, but the overall economy was already weak beforehand despite record stock markets and record low unemployment in late February. Savings were low and debt at all levels was very high. Job openings hit a record high in early December 2019 and were declining noticeably well before the virus and shutdowns hit. Therefore, I was expecting a weak economy in 2020 and the shutdowns brought it about sooner than anticipated and have no doubt made it worse. So, we have in effect both a business cycle depression and the economic restriction of the lockdown at the same time. I would not have been surprised if we had reached 10 percent unemployment, but obviously it would not have occurred so quickly without the shutdowns.

Inslee extends economic ‘pause’ until July 28, warns of ‘risk’ of increased restrictions
The “pause” in Washington’s economic reopening will be extended for at least two more weeks as the state tries to stem the rising number of COVID-19 cases, Gov. Jay Inslee said Tuesday. Some areas face a “significant risk” that they could face more restrictions if current efforts to fight the pandemic aren’t successful, Inslee warned. “This pandemic is still surging in the state of Washington,” Inslee said while announcing the pause that freezes counties in their current phase of reopening.
