War and the weather: what caused the huge economic slump of 1706?
Queen Anne was on the throne. Work had just started on Blenheim Palace in honour of John Churchill’s victories over Louis XIV’s French armies in the war of Spanish succession. The union between England and Scotland was imminent. 1706 is how far economic historians have to look back to find a slump bigger than the one that now threatens the country as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The 1619 Project Wins a Pulitzer Prize for Agitprop
Journalism and academia are supposed to honor, as their highest value, the fearless pursuit of truth. If you tried to parody the sad decline of prestige awards in those fields into an ideologically blinkered self-congratulatory echo chamber for progressive agitprop, it would be difficult to find a more on-the-nose example than the Pulitzer Prize awarded to Nikole Hannah-Jones of the New York Times for commentary. Hannah-Jones was, according to the Pulitzer committee, honored for “a sweeping, deeply reported and personal essay for the ground-breaking 1619 Project, which seeks to place the enslavement of Africans at the center of America’s story, prompting public conversation about the nation’s founding and evolution.”

The U.S. Postal Service 'Unsustainable,' Says GAO. And That Was Before COVID-19 Hit.
After losing $78 billion since 2007 amid a decline in mail volume coupled with soaring pension costs, the United States Postal Service's (USPS) business model is "not financially sustainable," a government audit has concluded. In a scathing report set to be released later today, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) calls on Congress to reevaluate all aspects of the Postal Service's operations, from how often Americans receive their mail to whether the USPS should be restructured to receive annual infusions of taxpayer dollars. "Absent congressional action on critical foundational elements of the USPS business model, USPS' mission and financial solvency are increasingly in peril," the audit concludes.

Sue Lani Madsen: Where’s the beef? There’s plenty on the hoof
While the retail price of beef has gone up, the price of cattle has dropped faster than a 401(k) during a pandemic. Price gouging or price fixing, either way, it’s the consumer who picks up the check. The independent ranchers of the Cattle Producers of Washington feel like they’re being gouged. They raise the beef and take the risks while the packing houses drive down the price for their cattle. CPoW claims the packers manipulate the market by bringing in cheap foreign imports of boxed beef and selling it as if it’s American born and raised.

'We'd Like to Do It': Trump Says US, Russia Looking Into Moving Ahead on Arms Control Deal
Following a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday, US President Donald Trump indicated the two countries are ready to discuss arms control agreements. Trump told reporters at the White House on Thursday he and Putin were both interested in discussion new arms control agreements. "We are talking about arms control with Russia and we will go forward with that and we are talking about it very seriously," Trump said. "They'd like to do it and we'd like to do it." Earlier in the day, the White House released a statement about their phone call, saying, “President Trump reaffirmed that the United States is committed to effective arms control that includes not only Russia, but also China, and looks forward to future discussions to avoid a costly arms race." This mirrors what US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov last month after the latter indicated a willingness to discuss extending the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START), which expires next year. The agreement limits the number of different types of nuclear weapons the US and Russia may construct.
'Somebody Was Stupid': Trump Doubles Down on Claims That COVID-19 Leaked From Wuhan Lab
US President Donald Trump is standing by his previous conspiracy theory that the COVID-19 novel coronavirus was unleashed onto to the world following a possible mishap at China's Wuhan Institute of Virology. "Something happened," Trump, referring to the virology lab, asserted to reporters on Thursday after being questioned about his unsubstantiated theory on COVID-19's origin. "Probably it was incompetence. Somebody was stupid," he added amid a White House photo-op with Texas Governor Greg Abbott, While Trump's evidence of the virus' link to the Wuhan lab remains to be seen by the public, that has not prevented the US president and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo from ramping up anti-Beijing rhetoric. "China could have spared the world a descent into global economic malaise. They had a choice but instead - instead China covered up the outbreak in Wuhan," Pompeo told reporters Wednesday.
Trump Renews US Sanctions Against Syria Over Ongoing Conflict
President Donald Trump sent a letter to Congress on Thursday announcing that he is renewing US sanctions against Syria due to the ongoing conflict in the country. "I have determined that it is necessary to continue in effect the national emergency declared with respect to this threat and to maintain in force the sanctions to address this national emergency", Trump said in the letter to House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Trump called on the Syrian government to end the war in the country and condemned Russia and Iran for supporting Syrian President Bashar Assad. The US president also called on the Syrian government to enact a nationwide ceasefire and to negotiate a political solution to the conflict.
US Justice Department Drops Criminal Case Against Ex-Trump National Security Adviser Michael Flynn
As a result of the Russia probe, Flynn struck a plea deal with the FBI, confessing to willingly lying to the agency about his contacts with Russian ambassador to the US, Sergei Kislyak, in 2016. Flynn later withdrew his plea and successfully fought attempts to sentence him in 2020. The US Justice Department is dropping its case against former White House national security advisor Michael Flynn, according to the DOJ motion filed Thursday. The decision was made "after a considered review of all the facts and circumstances of this case, including newly discovered and disclosed information", the documents read. It was decided that an interview Flynn had with the FBI was "conducted without any legitimate investigative basis".
US Messed Up While Manipulating Origin Theory of COVID-19, Report Says
This opinion piece questions the priorities certain countries have while dealing with COVID-19: US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo proclaimed that "enormous evidence" shows the COVID-19 outbreak began in a laboratory in Wuhan, raising doubts immediately with his claim as it breaks with a common recognition of global scientists. The World Health Organisation said there were some 15,000 full genome sequences of the novel coronavirus available, and "from all of the evidence that... this virus is of natural origin." US infectious disease expert Dr Anthony Fauci also suggested no scientific evidence had been given to support the theory that the virus was made in a Chinese laboratory. The US President Donald Trump's administration, including Pompeo, keep spreading lies and misleading domestic and international audiences without any evidence to prove their suspicion. For most countries, the top priority and the biggest challenge are to contain the outbreak and thereby secure economic recovery. The US government clamour to promote a rumour of the virus origin, an issue that is supposed to be solved by scientists, completely unmasked its political purpose.
Russia Discusses With Turkey Delivery of Extra S-400 Systems - Defence Cooperation Agency
Moscow and Ankara discuss the composition and the time frame for the delivery of an additional batch of the Russian S-400 air defence systems, the head of the Russian Federal Service of Military-Technical Cooperation, Dmitry Shugayev, has said. "The issue of an additional batch of S-400 for Turkey remains on the agenda. We are coordinating the composition, the delivery time frame and other conditions. Negotiations are ongoing today, and we hope to reach agreement in the foreseeable future," Shugayev has told the National Defence magazine.
Bill Gates and His 'War Against Cash' Are a Threat to Our Liberty, Economist Warns
A consortium of powerful interests that include Visa and Mastercard, the International Monetary Fund, billionaire Bill Gates and the US Treasury have been slowly lobbying for cash to be abolished worldwide and replaced with digital only currencies. Norbert Haering holds a PhD in economics and is co-founder and co-director of the World Economics Association, the second largest association of economists worldwide. Dr Häring is a financial journalist, blogger and author of popular books on economics. His two most recent books covered the campaign to abolish cash. The latest "Schönes neues Geld" (Brave new money) published in German in 2018 just came out in Chinese. Dr Häring initiated a lawsuit in 2015 for the right to pay his fees to public broadcasters in cash, which has since made its way to the European Court of Justice (CJEU). The date for the oral hearing at the CJEU is set for 15 June 2020.
Final Judgement of Finland's Basic Income Trial: More Happiness, But Little Employment Boost
During the controversial two-year trial, 2,000 randomly chosen unemployed participants received a no-strings-attached €560 benefit each month, and were free to search for work and even start businesses. On average, the basic income resulted in an employment boost of a mere six days. A final analysis of Finland's two-year basic income experiment found that the unconditional benefit received by recipients improved their mental well-being, but didn't directly spur them into finding work, the newspaper Hufvudstadsbladet reported. While the recipients of the no-strings-attached 560-euro monthly payment reported feeling less mental strain, depression, sadness, and loneliness compared to the control group, the effect on employment was found to be marginal.
Beijing on Probe Into COVID-19 Origins: China Has Always Been Open to Cooperation With WHO
The day before, UK Health Minister Matt Hancock said as quoted by Reuters that Britain has not seen any evidence that the new coronavirus is man-made. The Chinese Foreign Ministry on Thursday stated that the country has always been open to cooperation with the World Health Organisation (WHO) on matters including the origin of the novel coronavirus. Speaking further, ministry spokesman Hua Chunying accused US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo of telling one lie to cover up another in his continued attacks against Beijing over the coronavirus pandemic. The US previously said that it has "significant evidence” about the coronavirus deliberately being released from a laboratory in Wuhan.
