Government Shutdown Shows Why We Should Decentralize National Parks
As tourist attractions, and as giant recreational areas for locals, public lands are quite valuable as indirect sources of revenue for both private and government sector institutions in the area. The whole thing illustrates the danger of allowing the federal government to exercise control over vast swaths of the American landscape while minimizing the influence of those who are impacted most by federal decisions. Besides, there's certainly no justification for having an entire national system of parks dependent on Washington, DC. The very idea that access to an outhouse in rural California should depend on a backroom deal in Washington DC should strike every reasonable person as utterly absurd.

Trump and Dems Leave Another Meeting on Shutdown as President Remains Firm About Wall Funding
President Donald Trump and congressional leaders were unable to reach a deal on Friday to reopen the government after meeting for the second time in a week. Trump came out of the meeting sounding optimistic that the group is moving closer toward getting on the same page, despite the standing disagreement, and he stressed the larger importance of America’s national security and the overall protection of American citizens.

Here’s How Ocasio-Cortez Plans to Pay for Her ‘Green New Deal’
American billionaires like Jeff Bezos (shown above right), Bill Gates, Warren Buffett and Mark Zuckerberg had better watch out: Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) wants to slap them with a “progressive tax rate system” that could result in a tax as high as 70 percent.

Jobs Report Gets Bipartisan Praise Alongside Shutdown Fears
Lawmakers praised the most recent jobs report on Friday that showed employment growth jumping in December, despite fears over the ongoing partial government shutdown. The Bureau of Labor Statistics found in its latest monthly employment report that job growth increased by 312,000 in December.

Democrat’s Profanity Is Not a ‘Big Deal,’ Says Nancy Pelosi
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Friday downplayed freshman Rep. Rashida Tlaib’s profanity-laced vow to impeach President Trump, as Republicans strongly condemned the language — and the defiant Democrat offered no apologies. Pelosi (D-Calif.), who reclaimed the gavel after being elected House speaker on Thursday, commented on Tlaib’s remarks during an MSNBC town hall, expressing distaste for the language but quickly suggesting Trump’s foul mouth led the way in coarsening the rhetoric in Washington.

Trump Hits Back at the Democrats Who Are Crying ‘Impeachment’
President Donald Trump rebuked Democrats in the newly minted House majority who wasted no time in calling for his impeachment. He tweeted Friday that liberals “only want to impeach me because they know they can’t win in 2020” against him. Democrats officially reclaimed the House majority on Thursday amid a partial government shutdown over border wall funding; Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is now at the helm.

Webb for Defense Secretary? Trump Reportedly Mulling the Choice
Gen. Jack Keane, a strategic analyst for Fox News, said Thursday night on “The Story” with Martha MacCallum that Jim Webb, a 2016 Democratic presidential candidate and a sharp critic of China, was “contacted as part of the White House’s search for a long-term replacement for former Defense Secretary Jim Mattis,” as Fox News Insider noted. Webb, 72, is a former senator from Virginia. He is a decorated Marine Corps officer. As a Republican, he served as secretary of the Navy for a short period under President Ronald Reagan in the 1980s.

The $15 Minimum Wage Is Here. Why We Need $33 an Hour.
On Jan. 1, the new minimum wage, set at $15 an hour, went into effect in New York City, and most companies employing more than 10 people have to pay it. The increase, considered a crucial step in the fight against poverty, is the result of a hard-fought grass-roots organizing effort begun seven years ago and championed as a great victory by liberal politicians, even those who were initially not liberal enough to embrace it. But how much will the new standard do to alleviate some of the most punishing aspects of the city’s affordability crisis? Last year, San Francisco and Seattle enacted a $15 minimum wage. Though both cities are also fantastically expensive, it is too soon to to draw any comparison to New York, which presents its own challenges. (What we do know from a study examining the experiment in Seattle is that as wages increased on the path to $15 an hour, experienced workers benefited most from higher pay at the expense of reduced opportunities for workers with less experience.)
