THE EMBARRASSMENT OF ANGLICAN SOCIAL TEACHING?
Related to yesterday's post, do read the latest offering from The Hipster Conservative on 'The Idea of an Anglican Society', addressing the place of the Market in human society. Attention is drawn to the Book of Homilies urging the "keeping and hallowing [of] Sunday". The Homily points to the commercial reasons given for not doing so: if they have any business to do, though there be no extreme need, they must not spare for the Sunday ; they must ride and journey on the Sunday ; they must drive and carry on the Sunday ; they must row and ferry on the Sunday they must buy and sell on the Sunday ; they must keep markets and fairs on the Sunday : finally, they use all days alike ; workdays and holy days are all one.

The Russian Orthodox Church fears the self-identity of its flock and His Eminence Metropolitan Pavel of Minsk and Zaslavl fears the spiritual growth of his flock, according to Archbishop Daniel of Pamphylia, one of the two Constantinople Exarchs to Kiev who helped prepare for December 15’s “unification council.” While speaking about Ukraine in an interview with the BBC, Abp. Daniel also addressed the possibility of autocephaly in several other countries.
It is fine if the Russian Orthodox Church wants to venerate Tsar Nicholas II and his martyred family as saints, but the Ukrainian Church abroad does not accept this canonization, according to Archbishop Daniel of Pamphylia, one of the two Constantinople Exarchs to Kiev. The topic arose when Abp. Daniel spoke of the possibility of the new Ukrainian nationalist structure canonizing saints in a new interview with the BBC. Note that the Ukrainian Churches in the diaspora are under the jurisdiction of the Patriarchate of Constantinople, not of the canonical Church in Ukraine.
