By some accounts reported earlier in the day, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who is the acting official in charge of the probe into collusion between the Trump presidential campaign and Russia, visited the White House today to resign. Reports citing sources inside the White House suggest that Rosenstein’s departure is a foregone conclusion, but supporters of Trump in the media and Congress are divided over whether the president should force him out before or after the midterm elections in early November.
Pompeo says US pastor may be released; Turkish lira jumps
Turkey’s currency took a break from its enduring slide on Monday, following some hints from US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo that Washington and Ankara could smooth over one area of contention this week. Pompeo indicated, speaking on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly gathering in New York, that he would have a chance to talk with Turkish counterparts on the issue of US citizens detained by Turkey, with a focus on one individual, pastor Andrew Brunson, who is facing coup-plotting and terrorism charges.
Trump’s America: Establishment under siege
OPINION: The funeral service for the late senator John McCain, which was held at Washington’s National Cathedral on September 1, was notable not so much because of the 2,500 mourners in attendance but because of the conspicuous absence of US President Donald Trump. That Trump was absent from this assembly was not a passing trivial occurrence. Those that had assembled to pay their last respects to one of their own was the American political Establishment. Trump’s absence was simply a brazen reminder that he was not one of them.
With eyes on Iran, Bolton warns against Russia-Syria missile deal
After Russia announced Monday that it will soon supply its advanced S-300 missile systems to Syria, the Trump administration was quick to join Israel in expressing its objection. “We think introducing the S-300s to the Syrian government would be a significant escalation by the Russians,” US national security advisor John Bolton said on Monday, adding: “and something that we hope if these press reports are accurate, they would reconsider.”
India wins, China loses in Maldives election
Indian Ocean republic's presidential poll was a China vs India proxy battle that saw pro-Delhi candidate Ibrahim Mohamed Solih prevail. Abdulla Yameen, the pro-China president of the Maldives, conceded electoral defeat today (September 24) to opposition leader Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, widely viewed as an ally of India. Solih won a resounding 58.3% of the popular vote, but a delighted New Delhi could not wait until the final tally was announced to heap diplomatic praise on the democratic result.

Special interests supporting the Kigali Amendment, which would ban refrigerants widely-used by consumers with air conditioning and businesses that rely on air conditioning and refrigerators, are spreading false claims that must be scrutinized, according to a new report out today by Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI) Senior Fellow Ben Lieberman. Supporters of the Kigali Amendment include some manufacturers of Kigali-compliant refrigerants and equipment and environmental activists and they are making demonstrably false claims to argue in favor of the White House submitting the amendment to the U.S. Senate for ratification.

One of the greatest takedowns of the minimum wage you’ll ever find comes from an unlikely place. “The minimum wage is the Jason Vorhees of economics. It just won’t die. No matter how many jobs the minimum wage destroys, no matter how many times you debunk it, it always comes back to wreak more havoc.”

The average income in the freest quartile of nations is a staggering 7.1 times higher than the average income in the least free quartile ($40,376 and $5,649 respectively). The bottom 10 per cent of income earners in the freest countries make, on average, 7.9 times more than the poorest 10 per cent in the least free quartile. Comparatively, extreme poverty (as defined by the World Bank as an income of than $1.90 per day) is almost non-existent in the freest countries. By comparison, almost a third of all people in the bottom quartile of economies live in extreme poverty. It is clear, then, that for the absolute poorest in any given society, it is unimaginably better to live in a freer economy.

Surprise! ‘Morning Joe’ Rediscovers Journalism Ethics
MSNBC’s normally partisan “Morning Joe” co-hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski rebuked “so-called” reporters Tuesday who “have already decided” that Judge Brett Kavanaugh is a “rapist” and “serial sexual abuser.” “We have been harshly critical of Fox News for being in the tank and being state-television for [President] Donald Trump,” Scarborough began with a typical jab at the president. “Let me tell you something. What we’ve seen the last week has made me want to call networks and put a ‘D’ in front of the name of the so-called journalists that have already decided that Brett Kavanaugh is a rapist. Or what was the — ‘serial sexual abuser,'” Scarborough said. “Oh, really? You know that? Do you really know that?”

This so-called new accuser, suggested Avenatti, supposedly will reveal damning new information about Judge Brett Kavanaugh, the president’s high court nominee.
Dems ‘Exploited Women’ for ‘Political Gain,’ Sanders Says
White House press secretary Sarah Sanders lectured Democrats for loving to “exploit” and “champion” women leveling sexual assault allegations for “political gain” until “they disagree with them” during an interview on ABC News’ “Good Morning America” on Tuesday. “I think that the way that [Democrats] have operated in this is absolutely appalling,” Sanders told ABC News anchor George Stephanopoulos. “If anything has been appalling, it’s the way that they have gone after and used these people’s stories and their lives and exploited them for political gain.”
Fox News Panel Debates the ‘Ridiculous’ New Yorker Piece on Kavanaugh
On the “The Ingraham Angle” Monday night, Fox News host Laura Ingraham and her panel discussed The New Yorker piece by Ronan Farrow and Jane Mayer, which came out on Sunday, and its revelation of claims of sexual misconduct against Judge Brett Kavanaugh by a woman named Deborah Ramirez. The allegations against Kavanaugh date back to the 1980s and her days at Yale, where Kavanaugh also attended college. Ingraham slammed the standards that are being set for investigating the pasts of any SCOTUS nominees going forward — standards that Democrats may have to meet as well.

Politicians, journalists and immigration experts for years have claimed there are about 11 million illegal aliens in the country, but a new study by three Yale University professors says the actual total is 22 million. Or more. “Using mathematical modeling on a range of demographic and immigration operations data, the researchers estimate there are 22.1 million undocumented immigrants in the United States,” according to Yale Insights, a publication of the Yale School of Management.

Gina Sosa is not impressed by attempted rape. “What boy hasn’t done this in high school?” she asks. “Please, I would like to know.” Since she asked so nicely, I went on Twitter, looking for men who managed to get out of school without committing attempted rape. Turned out to be pretty easy. I found lots of them.

Senator Maria Cantwell should have committed and kept her word. As late in the campaign season as Tuesday, Washington state voters remained hard-pressed to know when and where they could see the Democratic incumbent face her Republican opponent — or whether two promised debates between the candidates would actually occur. This is an unacceptable level of evasion for a U.S. senator seeking her fourth term, especially a mere three weeks or so before ballots go out in the mail.
