Remembering the Big Snow: 1968-1969

In January 1969, Spokane was well on its way to having a record snowfall. On Feb. 1, 1969, The Spokane Daily Chronicle reported that Spokane led the country in snow depth with 42 inches. This photograph was taken on Sprague Avenue facing east. The winter of 68-69 still holds the modern record for maximum snowfall in Spokane. Here’s what one reporter wrote about it in 2008 when it looked like that winter would tie: "Warning signs for a bad winter appeared in December (2007). Snow fell on 22 days that month, the same as in December 1968. But the maximum snow depth on Jan. 31 was 20 inches. That’s less than half the snow – 42 inches – that piled up in 1969."
