After the Pearl Harbor attack on December 7, 1941, the United States was in a panic to protect its remaining aircraft. At a Lockheed plant in Burbank, the Army began setting up barricades to help protect the plant. The Army also called Col. John F. Ohmer because they wanted him to disguise the plant to look like a suburb.

Monty Python's John Cleese: "I'm Offended Every Day"
If we start saying, "oh, we mustn’t criticize or offend them," then humor is gone, and with humor goes a sense of proportion, and then, as far as I’m concerned, you’re living in 1984.

College-Educated Women Can't Find Good Men
Over at The Daily Beast, Emily Shire writes about Date-Onomics: How Dating Became a Lopsided Numbers Game, which seems to really resonate with her as a single, college-educated woman in Manhattan. As it quickly becomes apparent, she can’t find a good man. But she takes some solace in the fact that there is actually a data-driven reason that she can’t find a good man: “In his book, Birger eloquently explains, in terms that even the non-statistically-literate can comprehend, that the gender ratios of college graduating classes in the past few decades reveal that there really aren’t enough single guys. The ‘man deficit’ is real for the graduate set. The current college class breakdown of women to men is 57:43, which means that there will be about one-third more women than men with college degrees when graduation arrives.

Churches about nothing
Our Anglican Communion recently decided at its Primates’ Meeting to “walk together” rather than apart, despite the painful decisions and conversations that this might involve. This will be a difficult path, but it is the right one. For if we are to have any kind of common life worthy of the name, we have to have, as Happy Endings put it, the “serious conversations.” These cannot simply amount to everyone sharing their individual hearts, and then providing a safe spiritual space so that everyone to their own hearts may be true. How boring is that! The world desperately needs a witness to a people constituted by a genuine common life, in pursuit of a genuinely common good, debating passionately and nonviolently about how to order our life together after the pattern of the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. What the world doesn’t need are yet more inane sermons and churches “about nothing.” Such churches produce people, as Stanley Hauerwas notes, who say things like “Jesus Christ is Lord and Savior, but that’s just my personal opinion” — after which, of course, there is nothing else of any consequence to say, nothing to learn, no way to challenge others or discover goods in common that we did not know we had. Our common culture already has quite enough of that.
