American Indian Slavery: The Sinners and Secrets of ‘Brethren by Nature’
The enslavement of the Indigenous Peoples of New England was integral to the very fabric of colonial life even as early as the 1620s, says [Margaret Ellen] Newell. The colonial economy depended on slavery, many well-to-do households functioned only because of slavery, early colonial legal codes were devised to justify slavery and the Pequot War and King Philip’s War were fought in large measure to perpetuate slavery. Newell is an associate professor of early American history at Ohio State University; her second book represents almost 15 years of research and writing.

5. “Impartiality is a pompous name for indifference, which is an elegant name for ignorance.”
6. “Men do not differ much about what things they will call evils; they differ enormously about what evils they will call excusable.”
7. “There is no such thing on earth as an uninteresting subject; the only thing that can exist is an uninterested person.”
8. “What embitters the world is not excess of criticism, but absence of self-criticism.”
9. “When learned men begin to use their reason, then I generally discover that they haven't got any.”
