As demands for popular participation rise, Thailand's infant democracy finds itself at a crossroads
Thailand's ongoing strife is symptomatic of a deep cleavage that cannot be resolved by the victory of one side. Civil society groups want a greater say in the democratic process in order to break down the patron-client system that has dominated the country's life in the past 40 years.

The prelate calls for the return of schools and assets seized from Burmese Church in the past.

On the day of the Epiphany, Kirill defends pilgrims who worship the 'gifts of the Magi'
Russian commentators said that society is "childish" when people spend hours in the freezing cold to kiss a "15th century fake," i.e. the relics of the gifts brought to the Messiah. For the patriarch, to those who shake the faith, the answer "must be a deeper belief in the truth of the word of God".

A small step for the committee, a stab in the eye for Big Government
Kudos to Rep. Brent Crane, a Nampa Republican, and some of his colleagues for taking a small step to stab Big Government in the eye in the House Business Committee—and for helping shine a light on another dumb, hideous, unnecessary and plainly awful fact of Idaho law: It is illegal, today, to give a relative a haircut in the state of Idaho. And it’s not just haircuts. The hyper-regulation of cosmetology includes hair coloring, the application of cosmetics, manicures and pedicures, all of which requires licensure.

Tunisian Constitution Finds No Place for Sharia
Some three years after a resolution swept long-ruling President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali from office, Tunisia is still working through the details of its new governing system. In the draft of its constitution the writers have chosen not to include the Islamic Sharia law as the basis for its legal code. It is common throughout much of the Muslim world to include Sharia as the basis for its laws. While there remain some worrying parts of the law, this does show a positive sign for protecting the religious freedoms of Tunisia’s minority religions.

ST. LOUIS A walk down the 6-mile city street named for the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. yields plenty of images that would surely unsettle the civil rights leader: shuttered storefronts, open-air drug markets and a glut of pawn shops, quickie check-cashing providers and liquor stores. The urban decay along Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in St. Louis can be found in other major American cities, from Houston and Milwaukee to the nations capital. "Its a national problem," said Melvin White, a 46-year-old postal worker in St. Louis and founder of a 3-year-old nonprofit group that is trying to restore Kings legacy on asphalt. "Dr. King would be turning over in his grave." Nearly three decades into the observance of Mondays federal holiday, the continuing decline of the most visible symbols of Kings work has White and others calling for a renewed commitment to the more than 900 streets nationwide named in the Atlanta natives honor.

Alongside a wide, sandy beach on the German island of Rügen in the Baltic Sea stands the world’s biggest hotel. A hotel so huge it stretches over a staggering three miles and has 10,000 bedrooms all facing the sea. Surprisingly even though this beach resort was built more than 70 years ago, not a single guest has ever stayed there. That is because this beach resort named Prora was build by the Nazis between 1936 and 1939 on Hitler’s orders. During that same period, Hitler was making preparations for war which ultimately took priority, and the massive building project was never finished.

Magazine Publishes, Retracts Cartoon Implying Jewish Control of American Government
In a recent issue the Economist, a British news magazine, published an article about the Obama administration's efforts to reach a deal with the Iranian government over its nuclear program. The article was accompanied by a political cartoon that depicts President Obama being chained and restrained in his effort to a seal of the U.S Congress. Included on the seal are two representations of the Star of David, a traditional symbol of Judaism. An interpretation is that Obama is being "held back" by the Congress and its Jewish influences--a common anti-Semitic trope.
