CEMETERIES

SPRING CANYON CEMETERY
Taken from an article in The Star - 1958

Arrangements have been completed for the Grand Coulee Dam Area to have a local cemetery.  The property has been platted and dedicated, and development, leveling and landscaping will be started within the near future, it was announced today by Leslie and Walter Paull of Soap Lake, cemetery consultants in charge of the project.

The new cemetery is located at Spring Canyon, somewahat above the National Recreation Area on five acres of land which the Lions Club purchased from Ray Johnson for that purpose.

With the aproval of His Excellency, the Most Reverend Bernard J. Topel, Bishop of Spokane, half of the platted section will be for Catholic use and called the Sacred Heart Cemetery, subdividion of Spring Canyon Cemetery.

Overlooking both sections will be a larger than life size statue of Christ, with an overall height, including the pedestal, of more than twelve feet.

Under contract with the Lions Club, the cemetery is being developed by the Paull Brothers, both of whom are widely experienced in the field.  Lots are already available for purchase in either section.

Henry and Margaret Taschereau were among the first to purchase lots at the new cemetery.  Their lots were #1 & #2.  They are now both in #1. - C. S.

AISLE OF FLAGS AT SPRING CANYON CEMETERY

Two years ago Virginia Berthron and Vesta Seiler, members of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post No. 3157, stated they would like to have the casket flags of deceased veterans of the area flown at the Spring Canyon Cemetery.  Virginia was President of the Auxiliary that year, the next year Vesta served as President, they still had their hearts set on having the flags flying on Memorial Day, Veterans Day and the 4th of July.  This being the Bicentennial Year, the girls saw the opportunity to approach the veterans organizations to get the program accomplished.

The contacted their V.F.W. Post and received their approval; then they spoke to the American Legion Post 3157 and Auxiliary; World War I Post and Auxiliary, and the Disabled Veterans.  They were all very interested in the program.  Each organization sent two delegates and from these members the "Aisle of

Flags Association was formed, which consisted of Ken Skorheim, Chairman; Virginia Berthron, Treasurer; Marty French, Secretary; and Vesta Seiler, Publicity Chairman.

We started planning our materials and expenses to see if we would be able to carry out our project for maybe 10 or 15 flags for the first year.  One of our Auxiliary Members, Mabel Youngs, did a marvelous job of calling so many of the mothers, sisters, and/or wives who had lost a loved one and telling them of the project, and explaining what we were doing, and getting the flags to us.  The whole community became interested in our project and started sending donations of all amounts.  The work at the cemetery was donated by many people, and some of the material was also donated.

On Memorial Day, May 30, 1976, there were sixty eight flags dedicated.  The flags were left flying all night with lights shining on them which was a spectacular sight.  The next night the flags were taken down to be put up again on the 4th of July for two days and nights.  This year being the Bicentennial year it was decided to raise the flags on Sunday, Labor Day Weekend, and leave them up until Monday night.  They will also fly on the 11th of November, Veterans Day and Admission Day, weather permitting.  After 1976, they will be flown on Memorial Day, 4th of July and Veterans/Admission Day.

Several flags have already been donated to be dedicated next year.  Each year on Memorial Day any flags received during the year will be dedicated.

Virginia Berthron and Vesta Seiler, with the help of Mabel Youngs, are so proud to have a 'dream come true'.  With so many comments from all who have seen it we feel it's a very rewarding project -- to see all of those red, white and blue flags waving in the breeze when we stand at attention and remember why those flags are all flying so proudly!!
