Reports of government directives that media paint a positive picture come after market takes a beating. One of the advantages Beijing has in a trade war with the US, some observers have noted, is control of the public narrative. China’s government controls the media, so they can help shore up support for standing firm and not giving in to demands seen as unreasonable. The US, on the other hand, has to cope with a bitterly divided electorate. Not to mention, on tariffs, the US president’s own party largely opposes him. The Democrats, though traditionally sympathetic to more protectionist trade measures, will take any opportunity to challenge Trump.

Words from the President Who Achieved Economic Excellence without Sacrificing Freedom
On July 4th, Americans celebrate our freedoms. Unfortunately, we all but ignore the only President born on Independence Day—Calvin Coolidge, who, though denigrated by historians, produced remarkable results without sacrificing them.

Growing wildfires in U.S. West keep thousands from homes
Large wildfires grew across the American West on Wednesday, keeping thousands of people out of their homes for the July 4 holiday and forcing some strict bans on fireworks to prevent new fires from igniting in the hot, dry region. Shawn Vestal: On this July 4, let’s remember that civility isn’t always the right path
Two hundred and forty-two years ago, the men who founded the country did something supremely uncivil. It was insurrectionary. It was impolite. It was revolutionary. They reached a point where they could no longer take it, a point where the dictates of agreement and acquiescence were so clearly exceeded by more urgent priorities, that they told the king to go pound sand.
