What’s Missing in U.S. Policy Towards North Korea?
Since 2006, U.S. policy towards the Democratic People's Republic of North Korea (DPRK) has been focused almost entirely on attempting to deter the Kim family regime from developing nuclear weapons. While this is understandably a very serious concern, the exclusive focus of U.S. attention on this issue has drawn attention away from decades of human rights violations described last month by a United Nations commission as comparable to atrocities committed under the Nazi regime.

China: Gov’t Keeps Pressure on Families as Lawyers Meet With Detained Christians
In November of last year authorities in Henan, China, launched one of the most extensive crack downs on a official, government registered church in recent years. Nearly two dozen members of the Nanle County Christian Church were arrested, including church elders and pastors, while police blocked any attempt to hold future services. Lawyers who traveled to the area to represent the detained church members were attacked by hired thugs, as were international film crews that attempted to cover the arrests. Almost four months later, several of the church members remain in prison and are facing various trumped up charges. As their lawyers do their best to represent them in a highly corrupt and bureaucratic legal system, families of Christians from the church report ongoing intimidation at the hands of local authorities.

Pakistan: Angry Muslim Residents Bulldoze New Church Construction
In this brief report, the Christian community of Islamabad, Pakistan reports that a new church construction has been bulldozed by angry Muslim neighbors. Although the unwarranted destruction of the church is clearly illegal, local sources say none of the culprits have been arrested. Making up about 1.6% of the population, Christians in Pakistan face some of the most discriminatory  living conditions on earth, and are occasionally the target of wide-scale mob violence.

Atheists Force California Mother to Remove Memorial Cross for Son
Last week Annmarie Devany, a California resident, removed a roadside cross dedicated to the memory of her 19-year-old son Anthony after an atheist organization complained to local authorities that the cross was a violation of "separation of church and state." Since then replacement crosses have been placed on the roadside by residents protesting the decision. The incident has garnered national media attention and is only the latest in a long line of ongoing battles between Christian communities and atheist organizations seeking to remove all Christian symbolism from public life.

Eight Christians Have Been Arrested In Shush, Iran
Iranian police arrested eight Iranian Christians and continue to hold two of them under charges of “spreading Christianity.” Police raided a picnic where the men were meeting. They interrogated the men, holding them until 9:00 pm. They then released some of them, but had a warrant for the arrest of two of the men on charges related to their faith.

Syria Crisis: Nuns Freed By Rebels Arrive In Damascus
A group of Syrian Nuns that had been detained by a Syrian jihadist group for more than three months has now been released. The nuns who were taken from a monastery in Maaloula Syria were released as part of a prisoner exchange with the Syrian government releasing 150 women that were being held. The nuns were released at a Lebanese border town and have since been escorted back to the Syrian capital of Damascus. The situation regarding the nuns had served to highlight the dire conditions confronting the country’s Christian population.

Five Suspects of Zirve Massacre Released, Turkey’s Christians Anxious
Nearly seven years after the brutal murder of three Christians in central Turkey the five accused suspects have been released. As the case has now stretched on and on without a conviction due to various procedural issues and connection to a larger plot, the five were released due to a new law shortening the amount of time that an individual can be held prior to their conviction from 10 years to five years. The case is still on-going with a verdict scheduled to be rendered on April 10th. Christians throughout the country have been concerned for their safety and it again highlights their insecure place in Turkish society.
