CATHERINE MARGARET (ROSS) POSTON (1855-1934)

Catherine Margaret Ross, the youngest of the ten children of Drummond Ross and Maria Jane Beamish of Lake Beauport, Quebec, was born there on the 2nd March, 1855, and baptized at Valcartiar, Quebec (Church of England), on 25th November, 1855.  Her father died shortly after she was born, leaving her mother, still a young woman, to bring up her large family.  It was not long, however, before her mother married again, to the Hon. Fleury Taschereau of Quebec City, himself one of twelve children.

When her mother and stepfather left Quebec around 1860 to settle in Pembina, North Dakota, she, along with some of her brothers and sisters, went with them.  She spent her girlhood there but we know nothing about it.  On the 5th July, 1883, she married Albert Henry Poston, who was born in Quebec in 1859, son of Charles Poston of Quebec.  They made their home in St. Vincent, Minnesota, close to Pembina, and two of their children were born there, Charles Albert in 1884, and Charlotte Ella in 1886.

Her older sister, Sarah Harriet, who had married Patrick Ahern, also resided in St. Vincent, and had three children, but because she was not strong enough to withstand the severe weather of Minnesota and the Dakotas, she developed consumption while still a young woman and died on the 21st of April, 1889, leaving three motherless little girls, Bertha aged six, Blanche aged four, and Jennie two.  They were taken by their grandmother, Mrs. Jane Taschereau, to live with her, but only four months later, she died also, so Catherine Poston took the three little girls into her own home.

Sometime in 1889 or 1890, the Poston family left St. Vincent to go farther west, taking the three small Ahern children along with them.  They settled at Stadacona Farms, Sunset Boulevard, Spokane, Washington, where Albert Poston operated a large farm, and had five more children: Clara Adele, born in 1890, Cecil Augustus, in 1893, Gertrude Amy, born at Oakland, California, in 1895, Richard Gordon Ross, in 1898, and Maude Isobel, in 1901.

All of the seven Poston children eventually married, and so did the three Ahern girls.

Charles Albert Poston, the eldest, married a Quebec girl, Gertrude Renfrew, whose father "was a son of Renfrew the furrier.  Her mother was from Quebec too, Miss Connie Piddington."  (taken from a letter written by Charles Albert Poston, Xmas 1944, to his cousin, Miss Ella Ross, Loretteville, Que.)  They had twin girls, Vivian and Barbara, born 1930, and a son, John, born 1933.  (In the same letter he wrote of his mother, "like your father [Henry Ross], she too was a wonderful character.")  In 1964, Charles Poston was living in Victoria, British Columbia.

Charlotte Ella Poston, in 1912, married St. George Pentland Baldwin of Toronto, Ontario, a cousin, and they had four children:  Catherine Winnifred, born 1914; Gordon St. George, borne 1915; Dorothy Beatrice, born 1917; and Yvonne Barbara, born 1921; all of whom married.

Clara Adele Poston, in 1924, married Trevor Whitla Bridges, born in Barrie, Ontario, who was a Commander in the Royal Naval Reserve, British Navy, the wedding taking place at All Saints Cathedral, Spokane, with the Very Rev. H. G. Hennessy, Dean, officiating.  They resided at Penticton, British Columbia, and had no children.  She died there in 1961 and was buried at Riverside cemetery, Spokane.
Her husband died in 1962 and was buried in Barrie, Ontario.

__________________________________________________________________________

Cecil Augustus Poston married Martha Connolly and they had four children: Margaret Jean, Chari, Frances, and Albert who was born in 1947.  Cecil Poston was a dairyman, and on the 25th October, 1962, he was killed in an automobile collision when an intoxicated driver ran into him.

Gertrude Amy Poston, who was born at Oakland, California, on the 24th may, 1895, married Edwin Neal of Calgary in 1940, but he died two years later.  On the 11th October, 1952, she married Lt. Col. James D. Gemmill, who had served with the Royal Engineers, British Army, and had won the Military Cross twice during the First World War of 1914-1918.  He had also served in the North West Frontier in India.  They had no children.  As this biography is being written in 1971, they are residing at Kelowna, British Columbia, and I [Henry Ross Wiggs] am very grateful to her for giving me so much of the information about the Poston and the Ahern families which appears in this and other biographies.  Although she is of one generation older than mine, she and I were both born in the year 1895.

Richard Gordon Ross Poston married Lulu Keller in 1931 and had three children: Richard Gordon, James and Catherine (named after his mother).  They are all married; Dick has three sons, Catherine has three daughters.  After his wife died, Gordon Poston married Elizabeth (Bess) Stuart, a widow with a son and daughter, and when she died, he married his high school sweetheart, Janey Hawes, who was also twice widowed.  She had an adopted daughter Carolyn, and he has an adopted son, Stuart Ross.  They live on the Singing River Ranch, Mead, Washington, and he is a realtor dealing in the sale of farms, cattle ranches and other acreage.  His family ride a lot.

Judging from the tone of letters written by him to some of his relatives, he is evidently a congenial and jovial character with a keen sense of humour, resulting without doubt from the marriage of his Scotch grandfather, Drummond Ross, to his Irish grandmother, Maria Jane Beamish.  Other members of the Ross family possess the same amiable characteristic, and as Gordon Poston once wrote, "It's just hard to beat that good old Scotch-Irish combination."

Maude Isobel Poston, the seventh and youngest of the Poston family, married her half-cousin, Charles Samuel Taschereau of Spokane, son of Charles Fleury Taschereau who was her mother's half-brother.  They are now residing in Walla Walla, Washington, and have an adopted son, Reginald.

[This was written in 1971 by Henry Ross Wiggs; correction and notes by Cousin Sam in Italics].

HENRY ROSS  (1842 - 1926)

Henry Ross was born in the Seigneury of Lake Beauport in the County and District of Quebec on the 28th of May, 1842, the grandson of J. William Ross, in his lifetime Deputy Assistant Commissary General to His Majesty's forces at Quebec, and Sarah Blow Ross of Quebec, and son of Drummond Ross and Maria Jane Beamish) Ross of Lake Beauport.  He was baptized on the 3rd of July, 1842, in the Church of England church at Lake Beauport by the Rev. Henry D. Sewell in the presence of his parents and with John Beamish and Richard Beamish as sponsors.

At the age of twenty-one he eloped with Harriett Ann Sait, aged eighteen, daughter of Edward and Emma (Meers) Sait of the city of Quebec, and they were married in St. Matthews Church, Quebec, on the 23rd of November, 1863.

Harriett Ann Sait was born on the 23rd of October, 1945, at No. 6 Burlington Arcade, Piccadilly, London, England, where her father dealt in fine lace, some of which was purchased by Queen Victoria.  Later, he was appointed manager of a large dry goods store in Quebec City, now known as Simons', and sailed to Quebec without his wife and family because, at the time, his wife had just given birth to a baby girl (Kate) and could not make such a long sea voyage with a young infant.  In 1861, when Harriett was a girl of sixteen, she came to Canada with her mother in a sailing vessel, taking five weeks for the voyage.

Henry and Harriett Ross first resided on St. John Street, Quebec City, where their first child, Edward Ernest, was born on the 27th of September, 1864.  They moved to St. George Street where a second son, Percy Drummond, was born on Good Friday, 30th March, 1866.

A year or so later, they moved away from the city to make their home in St. Ambroise de la Jeune Lorette, a small village about nine miles to the north-west of Quebec City, and they lived there for the next twenty-three years.  During that time, they had eleven more children, three of whom died in infancy.  Of the remaining eight children, one was a boy, Charles Fleury, and seven were girls - Emma Clara, Eva Jane, Mabel Jessie, Ella Maggie, Leonora Florence, Harriett Maude, and Ethel Taschereau.  The seven sisters were inseparable, and when the time came for all but one of them to get married and have families of their own, they continued to keep in close touch with each other for the rest of their lives.  They were a very congenial group.

While living at St. Ambroise, Henry Ross operated a lumber mill and a general store, as well as the local post office.  In 1890, he was appointed Agent of Indian Affairs, so the family moved to the town of Jeune Lorette in which there was a Reservation for the Indians of the Huron tribe.  there, he opened a factory and employed the Indians to manufacture canoes, snowshoes, moccasins and other Indian goods.  He also opened and operated a general store for the community.

The house in which he and his family lived in Lorette was a three storied stone building that had been the home of an Indian chief.  The ground floor served as a store, and the two upper floors provided ample living quarters for his large family.  By the side of the house was a factory with two floors, where the Indians, sitting in groups, made snowshoes, weaving the prepared gut strings on the hardwood snowshoe frames.  they worked with great speed and were fascinating to watch.  When finished, the snowshoes were hung in the sun to dry.  Other Indians, some of them women, worked at making moccasins, beaded slippers, mitts and other articles.  In another building beyond a large kitchen garden at the rear of the house, the tanning of the raw pelts and the dressing of the skins was carried out.  By giving work to many Indians and by producing merchandise of a high quality, the factory proved to be a very successful venture, and the name of Henry Ross Limited, of which he was President, became well known across Canada.

__________________________________________________________________________

Henry Ross was a man of high integrity and honesty in business, made evident by the important industry which he built up.  he was respected by all who knew him, regardless of creed or nationality, and he was always ready to help anyone in distress.  However, being of an unostentatious nature, only those whom he helped knew of his kindly acts.  His wife was a kind, amiable person and a devoted wife and mother, whose genial disposition made their home a very pleasant and happy one.

On the 23rd of November, 1913, Henry and Harriett Ross celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary, and the members of their family and many intimate friends gathered at their home to join in the celebration and to present them with a handsome roll-top desk and chair, a beautiful set of bone china with special gold markings, and other gifts appropriate for the occasion.

Three years later, Harriett Ann Ross died on the 11th of November, 1916, at the age of 71 years, and was survived by her husband, two sons and seven daughters.  Her death brought great grief to her family who had always been so devoted to her.  Henry Ross continued to devote himself to his business but time was catching up with him and he was forced to give it up.  His daughter, Ella, who had never left home, had for many years looked after the running of the family household, and she now took good care of her aging father until, at the venerable age of 84, he died on the 31st of May, 1926.

His funeral was an impressive one, taking place from his residence and with an exceptionally large cortege following the remains into the city and to St. Michael's Church, Bergerville, located at the entrance to Mount Hermon cemetery.  Included in the mourners were leading residents and friends of the surrounding municipalities and the city.  The service at St. Michael's was conducted by the rector, Rev. Canon Fothergill, assisted by Rev. Dean Kelly and Rev. J. H. Barnes, rector of Trinity Church, Quebec.  His Lordship the Bishop of Quebec was present in the sanctuary and also participated in the service by reading the lesson.  At the conclusion of the service, the remains were transferred to Mount Hermon cemetery and there laid to rest in the family plot beside those of his wife who had predeceased him.

Surviving him were his two sons, Percy Drummond Ross of Loretteville, and Charles Fleury Ross of Toronto, and his seven daughters, Emma Clara (Mrs. W. H. Wiggs), Eva (Mrs. C. A. Sewell),  Mabel (Mrs. E. H. Sewell), Miss Ella Ross, Leonore (Mrs. W. C. Teakle), Maud (Mrs. E. A. Verret), and Ethel (Mrs. J. D. Fitzgerald).  He was also survived by his sister Catherine, Mrs. Albert Poston, residing at Spokane, Washington.  She was the youngest and last surviving member of Henry Ross' immediate family.

DEATH CLAIMS MR. HENRY ROSS

Prominent Citizen of Loretteville Passes Away at Patriarchal Age

Death has claimed an outstanding figure in the life of Lorette and surrounding districts in the passing away at his residence in Loretteville this morning of Mr. Henry Ross, President of the Henry Ross Company, Limited, at the patriarchal age of eighty-five years.  The late Mr. Ross had been in ill-health for some considerable time and due to his advanced years his demise was not altogether unexpected, but he put up a valiant fight against the grim reaper, which showed the wonderful vitality he possessed.
The Late Mr. Ross, who was a son of the late Mr. Drummond Ross and grandson of the late William Ross, in his lifetime Assistant Commissary-General to His Majesty's forces at Quebec, came of a well-known and prominent family of which the deceased gentleman proved himself a worthy successor.  A man of catholic views he was respected by all who knew him, regardless of creed or nationality, and of a benevolent disposition he succored many in distress, but this phase of his life was never prominent because of his unostentatious manner; in fact, he was one of those believers in not letting the left hand know that the right hand did.  It is only those who had occasion to benefit of his kindly acts that are able to fully appreciate the value of them.  The late Mr. Ross was noted for his integrity and honesty in business and this was made manifest by the important industry which he built up and conducted practically to the last.
Surviving him, his wife having predeceased him several years ago, are two sons, Messrs. Percey Ross, of Loretteville, and Charles F. Ross of Toronto, and six daughters.  [see below]  The latter are Mrs. W. H. Wiggs, Mrs. E. H. Sewell, Mrs. W. C. Teakle, Mrs E. A. Verret, Mrs. J. D. Fitzgerald and Miss Ella Ross.
The requiem service for the late Mr. Ross will be held in St. Michael's Church, Bergerville, at 2:30 o'clock on Wednesday afternoon, the body arriving in the city from Loretteville and proceeding direct to the church.  The interment will be made in Mount Hermon Cemetery.

FUNERAL OF LATE MR. HENRY ROSS

Impressive Tribute Paid to Memory of Well-Known Business Man

An impressive tribute was paid to the memory of the late Mr. Henry Ross when his funeral took place from his residence at Loretteville yesterday afternoon to St. Michael's Church, Bergerville.  An esceptionally large cortege followed the remains in automobiles from Loretteville to the city and included in the mourners were leading residents of the surrounding municipalities and the city.  The solemn service of requiem at the church was conducted by Rev. Canon Fathergill, Rector of Bergerville, assisted by Rev. Rural Dean Kelly and Rev. J. H. Barnes.  His Lordship the Bishop was present in the sanctuary and also participated in the service by reading the lesson.  Mr. Sidney Martin, organist of St. Matthew's Church, presided over the musical portion and during the obseques the hymns "For Ever With the Lord," "Now the Laborer's Task is O'er" and "On the Resurrection Morn" were feelingly rendered by the choir.
On the conclusion of the service the remains were transferred to Mount Hermon Cemetery and there laid to rest in the family plot besides those of his wife, who predeceased him several years ago.  The service at the graveside was conducted by Rev. J. Prout, incumbent of Valcartier, assisted by Ven. Archdeacon Scott.  An affecting tribute was here paid, when, as the body had been lowered into the grave and covered over with mother earth, Sir Charles Fitzpatrick, former Lieutenant-Governor of the province and a close and lifelong friend of deceased, personally deposited a wreath upon his grave.
The chief mourners were the son of deceased, Mr. Charles M. Ross, of Toronto, and Messrs. W. H. Wiggs, Chas. A. Sewell, E. A. Verrett, J. D. Fitz-Gerald and W. C. Teakle, sons-in-law, while the pall-bearers were six of his grand-children, W. Wiggs, E. A. Wiggs, Lorne Wiggs, Ernie Ross, Gordon Ross and Harold Sewell.
The floral tributes, mute expressions of the esteem in which the deceased had been held by a wide circle of friends and acquaintances, were both numerous and beautiful.
In the obituary of the late Mr. Henry Ross, published in monday's Chronicle-Telegraph,  [see above] the name of one of his daughters, Mrs. C. A. Sewell, was inadvertently omitted.  The deceased is also survived by a sister, Mrs. Albert Poston, now residing in Spokane, Washn.  She is the youngest and last surviving member of the lat Mr. Ross' immediate family.

personal update - Timor Mortis

As I post this, my wife's oldest brother (of four) lies near the end from cancer (the doctor says
24 hours).    [update: he passed 8 Mar 2011 at 4:10 am]    I probably won't be able to devote as much time in the next week as I would like to this blog or to researching my family trees.  Her second oldest brother died only last September, also from cancer.  Her youngest brother, who has been at least partially disabled since a logging accident when he was 17, has coronary stents.  Last year, a few weeks after receiving those, he was feeling so much better that he drove a four wheeler to his younger sister's home, and while returning to his home, the throttle stuck, flipping over and pinning him, resulting in numerous fractures and other injuries.  He is finally recovering after undergoing lung surgery in November because of clotting that was a result of those injuries.  We nearly lost him.  It has been a difficult time for my wife (the older of three sisters), who has also recently had cataract surgery, but she can now see better than she has in some time.

An anonymous poem from the 15th century comes to mind:

               Timor Mortis

In what estate so ever I be
            Timor mortis conturbat me.*

As I went on a merry morning,
I heard a bird both weep and sing.
5    This was the tenor of her talking:
            "Timor mortis conturbat me."

I asked that bird what she meant.
"I am a musket* both fair and gent;*
For dread of death I am all shent.:*
10         Timor mortis conturbat me.

       "When I shall die, I know no day;
       What country or place I cannot say;
Wherefore this song sing I may:
           Timor mortis conturbat me.

15    "Jesu Christ, when he should die,
To his Father he gan say,
       'Father,' he said, 'in Trinity,
           Timor mortis conturbat me.'

"All Christian people, behold and see:
20    This world is but a vanity
       And replete with necessity.
            Timor mortis conturbat me.

"Wake I or sleep, eate or drink,
When I on my last end do think,
25     For greate fear my soul do shrink:
            Timor mortis conturbat me.

"God grant us grace him for to serve,
And be our end when we sterve,*
And from the feind he us preserve.
30          Timor mortis conturbat me.

Notes:   The title phrase comes from the office of the dead: "Peccantem me quotidie et non poenitentem timor mortis conturbat me.  Quia in inferno null est redemptio misere mei Deus et salva me."  (Since I have been sinning daily and repenting not, the fear of death confoundeth me.  Since in hell there is no redemption, have pity one me, God, and save me.)
line 8:  musket: male sparrowhawk   gent: gentle
line 9:  shent: ruined
line 28:  sterve: die

James 1:27 - 2:5  (King James Version)

27 Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.  1 My brethren, have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with respect of persons. 2 For if there come unto your assembly a man with a gold ring, in goodly apparel, and there come in also a poor man in vile raiment; 3 And ye have respect to him that weareth the gay clothing, and say unto him, Sit thou here in a good place; and say to the poor, Stand thou there, or sit here under my footstool: 4 Are ye not then partial in yourselves, and are become judges of evil thoughts? 5 Hearken , my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him?

was born 3 April 1836 at Quebec, lower Canada
died 16 September 1886 at Pembina, North Dakota
buried at Pembina in Pembina cemetery
Resided at Quebec City until about 1860, then went west to settle in Pembina.
Occupation unknown. [possibly lawyer]  His father (1797-1862) was a politician.

MARIA JANE BEAMISH
(ROSS) TASCHEREAU

He was related to "Dr. Taschereau, Judge Taschereau, Major Taschereau and Archbishop Taschereau of Quebec."  Archbishop Elzear Alexandre Taschereau (1820-1898) was created a Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church in 1886, being the first Canadian to attain this honour.  His grandfather was Gabriel Eleazar Taschereau (1745-1809), legislative councillor.

Shortly after the death of DRUMMOND ROSS of Quebec City,
He married his widow, MARIA JANE (BEAMISH) ROSS 1858(?) at Quebec City.
She was daughter of WILLIAM and MARGURETTA (            ) BEAMISH.
She was born 1824 at north of Ireland and died 19 Aug 1889 at St. Vincent, Minnesota, USA.

In a "Clerk's Certified Copy of Death Record" of [Maria] Jane [Beamish]
Taschereau issued in 1971 and included in Henry Ross Wiggs' Family Record,
Taschereau is misspelled "Tachereau".  I am not including that exhibit here.
I am, however, including the following four exhibits to show some of his source
      material.

BEAMISH

The surname Beamish is of French origin, being derived from the place-name Beaumais (sur Dive).  In Ireland is is not in the Anglo-Norman category, as that might suggest, nor is it Cromwellian as has been sometimes stated.  The Family has been in Ireland since Elizabethan times, when the first of that name came from England to Co. Kerry, and has since been closely identified with that county and with Co. Cork.  If, as seems probable, all Irish Blemish's spring from that source it presents an example of a family which not only prospered but also multiplied in the course of the four centuries it has been here.
The leading landed families were seated in Co. Kerry; the several branches are fully described in Burke's "Landed Gentry of Ireland" (1912 and 1958 editions).

TASCHEREAU, GABRIEL ELZEAR (1745-1809), legislative councillor of Lower Canada, was born at Quebec on 27 March, 1745, the son of Thomas-Jacques Taschereau, a member of the Superior Council of New France, and Marie-Claire Fleury de la Gorgendiere.  He remained in Canada after the conquest, and took part in the defence of Quebec against the Americans in 1775.  In 1777 he was appointed a judge of the court of common pleas for Montreal, but resigned soon afterwards.  From 1792 to 1796 he represented the county of Dorchester in the Legislative Assembly of Lower Canada; and in 1798 he was appointed to the Legislative Council.  From 1794 to 1802 he was "grand voyer" of the District of Quebec, and in 1802 he was appointed deputy postmaster-general of the province, in succession to Hugh Finley (q.v.).  He died at his manor house at Ste. Marie de la Beauce on 8 September, 1809.  He was twice married (1) in 1773 to Marie-Louise-Elizabeth Bazin (d. 1783), by whom he had eight children, and (2) in 1789 to Louise-Francoise Juchereau Duchesney (d. 1841), by whom he had three children.

TASCHEREAU, ANTOINE CHARLES (1797-1962), politician, was born at Quebec on 26 October, 1797, the son of the Hon. Gabriel Elzear Taschereau (q.v.) and his second wife, Louise-Francoise Juchereau Duchesney.  He represented Beauce in the Legislative Assembly of Lower Canada from 1830 to 1838; and in 1834, as chairman of the select committee appointed to report on the state of the province, he presented in the House the famous Ninety-two Resolutions.  From 1841 to 1844 he represented Dorchester in the Legislative Assembly of united Canada.  In 1849 he was appointed collector of customs at Quebec.  He died at Deschambault, Lower Canada, on 11 June 1862.  In 1819 he married Adelaide Elizabeth, daughter of Louis Fleury de la Gorgendiere, seignior of Deschambault, and by her had twelve children.  (One of them was the Hon. Fleury Taschereau who married Maria Jane (Beamish) Ross about 1858.)

TASCHEREAU, ELZEAR ALEXANDRE (1820-1898), cardinal archbishop of Quebec, was born at Ste. Marie de la Beauce, Lower Canada, on 17 February, 1820, the son of the Hon. Jean Thomas Taschereau (q.v.) and Marie, daughter of the Hon. Jean Antoine Panet (q.v.).  He was educated at the Quebec Seminary, and was ordained a priest of the Roman Catholic church in 1842.  For nearly thirty years he was connected with the Quebec Seminary, first as a professor, then as a director, and finally as superior.  In 1862 he was chosen as vicar-general of the diocese of Quebec, and in 1871 he was consecrated sixteenth bishop and sixth archbishop of Quebec.  In 1886 he was created a cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church, being the first Canadian to attain this honour.  He retired from the administration of his diocese in 1894; and died at Quebec on 12 April, 1898.

The following is a transcript of a newspaper clipping from the area of Pembina, Dakota Territory, shortly after the funeral of [Adelaide] Jane Taschereau, who died  11 March 1886.  Mr. Wiggs placed this exhibit later in his manuscript, but I am placing it here with chart T-1, where her information is given.

LAST SAD RITES

Funeral of the late Miss Taschereau, of Pembina, D. T.

All that was mortal of this much esteemed young lady was consigned to its last resting place in the Pembina cemetery, on Friday afternoon 13th., inst.   The mourning cortege was exceedingly large, representatives of all creeds in the community were present.  The service was most solemn and impressive.  The sacred edifice was filled with the deceased young lady's friends and acquaintances.  Rev. Mr. Fortin, of Emerson, officiated.  The musical portion of the service was very appropriate.  Miss Adelaide Jane Taschereau is a daughter of Fleurie Taschereau, Esq., of Pembina, and grand daughter of the late Colonel A. C. Taschereau, of Quebec; she is also closely allied to Dr. Taschereau, Judge Taschereau, Major Taschereau and Archbishop Taschereau, also of Quebec, where she was born.
She will be sincerely mourned by a large number of friends.  She leaves a  father, mother, sisters and brothers to regret her loss.

           GONE TO HER REST

Gone to her rest--young and so fair--
Gone to her rest, in the Savior's care;
Passed from trials of earth away,
Gone to rejoice in endless day--
A life exchanged for treasures rare--
Joys celestial await her there.

Fond lips have kissed the pallid brow,
Fond hearts are aching, breaking now
With wound that only God can heal,
With grief that only those can feel
Who've looked upon some cherished face
And traced the signs of Death's embrace.

Why do the living weep and mourn?
On wings of light her spirit's borne
To pearly gates that open wide--
An angel guarding either side--
And, waiting there, an angel band
Reach down to grasp her out-stretched hand.

And, looking up, she sees the light
Of angel faces, shining bright!
And, hark! there sounds a heavenly strain,
A joyous welcome, glad refrain;
Her spirit, decked with heavenly charms,
Is nestled in her Father's arms.
                                                   G. H. M.

G.H.M. must have been well known in 1886, but I do not, in 2011, know who that might be without further research.

DRUMMOND ROSS  (1816 - 1856?)

Drummond Ross was the third son of J. William Ross and Sarah Blow of the City of Quebec, where he was born.  He was baptized on the 29th March, 1816, at St. Andrew's Church, Quebec.  His father intended that he should study for the Bar, but because of poor health, he was sent to the country to regain his strength.  There, he met and fell in love with the very young daughter of William and Margurette Beamish, who had emigrated from the north of Ireland.

On the 24th December, 1835, Drummond Ross and Jane Beamish were married in st. John's (Chalmers?) Church, Quebec City.  They evidently resided for a few years at Pointe Levis, a small town across the St. Lawrence river, just below Quebec, where their two eldest sons, William D. F. Ross, was born in 1837, and Munro Ross Ross was baptized in the Anglican church on the 13th July, 1838.  Later, they made their home "in the seigneury of lake Beauport in the County & District of Quebec", some thirteen miles north of the city, and he became a farmer.  There, they had eight [seven] more children, five [four] boys and three girls.  They were: R. B. Ross (Christian names and date of birth unknown), Drummond Ross, born 1840, Henry Ross, born 1842, Richard H. Ross, Samuel B. Ross, Clarissa Anne Ross, born 1850, Sarah Harriet Ross, born 1853, and Catherine Margaret Ross, born 1855.

[I have reason to believe that R. B. and Richard H. are the same person.  See below.]

Drummond Ross, the father, died in 1856 or 1857, in his forties, leaving his young widow, not yet forty, to bring up their large family.  However, soon after his death, she married again, her second husband being the Hon. Fleury Taschereau, son of Antoine Charles Taschereau (1797-1862), and Adelaide Elizabeth, daughter of Louis Fleury de la Gorgendiere, Seigneur of Deschambault, Quebec.  He was one of twelve children.  By him she had a son, Charles Fleury, and a daughter, Adelaide Jane, both born at Quebec.  The son was baptized in the Anglican Cathedral, Quebec City, on 4th September, 1859, with Harriott Ross, William Ross, and Drummond Ross as sponsors.

Of the children of Drummond Ross, the eldest, William D. F. Ross, married (wife's name unknown) and at first resided at Pointe Levis where his son, William Edward Drummond Ross, was born on the 15th September, 1871.  We have no record of the other members of his family.  However, we know that sometime later William D. F. Ross and his family went west to take up residence at Winnipeg, Manitoba, where he died on the 18th January, 1902.  Around 1911, his son and the other members of his family moved to Vancouver, British Columbia, to reside there.  Family Chart No. R-10 gives further information about William Edward Drummond Ross and his family.

The second son, Munro Ross Ross, born in 1838 at Pointe Levis, married Susan Ann Wiggs, daughter of Charles Wiggs and Sarah Locket (or Lockett) in 1860 at Quebec City, and by their marriage they united for the first time the Ross and the Wiggs families, which form the main branches of the two families contained in this "Family Record".  They had three children, and their names, together with other information, are shown on Family Chart No. R-5.

Another son, Henry Ross, born at Lake Beauport in 1842, married Harriett Ann Sait at St. Matthew's Church, Quebec City, on the 23rd November, 1863, and they raised a family of thirteen children, one of whom was my mother, Emma Clara Ross, so for that reason, as well as others, we have devoted a great deal of time and effort delving into the history of this particular branch of the family.  the biography of Henry Ross gives more information about him and his large family, and Family Chart No. R-6 shows names, dates, and other items about them.
_________________________________________________________________________

Of R. B. Ross (Christian names unknown) we have practically no record, except that he was known to have resided at one time at Luverne, Minnesota, where his three children were born; Ethel in 1886, Vivian in 1888, and Richard H. in 1889.  Ethel Ross married someone named Helloran, and according to the records of the District Court of Rock County, Luverne, Minn., Vivian Ross married Ray Sartellon on February 12, 1914, and Richard H. Ross, Jr., married Meta Rathjen on October 23, 1913.  No further information about him, his wife or his family is available.

[I have reason to believe that R. B. and Richard H. are the same person.  I have recently been contacted by a descendant of Richard Ross, who knows of him as "Richard Beamish Ross", but the dates match those of "Richard H. Ross",  whom I had presumed to be Sr. because of his son being "Richard H. Ross, Jr."  However, further research into Census and death records proves that the correct name is indeed Richard Beamish Ross, and that there is no Sr. or Jr.  Also, in the bio of Edward Ernest Ross, posted March 18, 2011, Mr. Wiggs states that there were nine children of Drummond Ross, rather than ten.  See update posted March 23, 2011.]

Clarissa Anne Ross, the eldest daughter of Drummond and Jane Ross, was born at Lake Beauport in 1850, and she married Charles Howard Jefferys in Trinity Church, Quebec, on the 5th July, 1873.  They went to Winnipeg, Manitoba, and raised a family, but we know nothing of their children who are now all dead, excepting their daughter, Ethel, who married Harry Goodman, and now reside in Winnipeg.  Family Chart No. R-7 gives some details.

The remaining children of Drummond and Jane Ross - Samuel B., Sarah Harriet and Catherine Margaret - were very young when their mother married a second time, and they accompanied their mother and their step-father when they left Quebec to venture west to take up residence at Pembina, North Dakota, where the parents settled for the rest of their lives.

Samuel B. Ross wen to St. Thomas, North Dakota, where he bought some one hundred and sixty acres of farmland, and died there on the 3rd October, 1890.  He never married.

Sarah Harriet Ross married Patrick Ahern and they resided at St. Vincent, Minnesota, quite close to Pembine.  They had three daughters, Bertha, Blanche and Jennie, and they were still very young when their mother died on Sunday morning, April 21st, 1889.  The funeral service took place the following day at Grace Church, Pembina, thence to the Pembina cemetery for burial.  Her three little girls were taken by their grandmother, Jane Taschereau, to live with her, but four months later she died, so the children then went to live with their mother's sister, Mrs. Albert Poston (Catherine Margaret Ross).

Catherine Margaret Ross was the youngest child of Drummond and Jane Ross.  She was born at Lake Beauport, Quebec, in 1855.  On the 5th July, 1883, at Pembina, she married Albert Henry Poston of Quebec City, and they took up residence at St. Vincent, Minn.  Their first two children were borne there - Charles Albert in 1885, and Charlotte Ella in 1886.  After her mother died in 1889, she took in her sister's three little girls mentioned in the previous paragraph.  And when the Poston family left Pembine in 1889 or 1890 to go further west to Spokane, Washington, the three Ahern children went with them.  At Spokane they had five more children, so their household must have been a busy one.  As the information about them is quite extensive, it is all contained in the biography of Catherine Martaret Ross which appears elsewhere.

As for the children of Fleury and Jane Taschereau, their son, lived with them in Pembina and later went west to Spokane, where he married three times.  His first two wives both died at childbirth, and by his third wife, Isobel Atkenson, he had seven children, one of which, Charles Samuel, married his half-cousin, Maude Isobel Poston, daughter of Albert and Catherine Poston.
_________________________________________________________________________

Adelaide Jane Taschereau, daughter of Fleury and Jane Taschereau, remained at home with her parents and never married.  While still a young woman, she died of consumption and was buried in the Pembine cemetery.  She was survived by her parents and her brother.

On Monday, August 19th, 1889, Jane Taschereau, "relict of the late Hon. Fleury Taschereau of Pembina, D. T.," died at St. Vincent at the age of sixty-five, and was buried in the family burial ground at Pembina.  Her obituary, which appeared in the local paper at the time of her death paid high tribute to her.  It stated, in part,     She was survived by the following members of her family: William D. F. Ross of Winnipeg; Munro Ross Ross of Montreal; Henry Ross of Jeune Lorette, Quebec; R. B. Ross of Luberne, Minnesota; Mrs. Clarissa Anne Jefferys of Winnipeg; Mrs. Catherine Poston and Charles F. Taschereau of St. Vincent, Minnesota; and Samuel B. Ross of St. Thomas, North Dakota.  Also by her son, Drummond Ross, whose whereabouts were unknown.
Although Mrs. Taschereau had been under medical attendance for weeks past, the news of her death on Tuesday last startled this community of which she had been the past several years a beloved and highly respected member.
During the past few weeks Dr. Harris was almost constantly in attendance, and all that medical skill could do was done, first to bring about recovery, at last to alleviate the pangs of mortal suffering.
To the last, Mrs. Taschereau retained great personal beauty, which, blended with great force of character, was acknowledged by everybody.  She dwelt among her people: Mrs. Poston, Mr. S. B. Ross, Mr. C. Taschereau, and their beloved mother being inseparables, defying separation.  Since the death of her daughter, Mrs. Ahern, her three little motherless grandchildren have lived with her, and there never has been a more model household.  The affection of her children, at a time of their lives when most children neglect their parents, caused universal admiration, and they are today heirs of the blessing promised in the 5th commandment.
On Tuesday evening, at the service held in Christ Church by Bishop Gilbert, prayers were offered in behalf of the afflicted family.  Wednesday, the remains were followed by sorrowing relatives and friends to the family burial ground at Pembina, where she was buried, Rector Beer reading the beautiful ritual of the Episcopal church.
He was not yet twenty years old when his mother re-married, and it was said that he had an argument with his stepfather, Fleury Taschereau.  He said he was going away and that they would never hear from him again.  Many years later, someone sent his sister, Mrs. Catherein Poston, of Spokane, Washington, a clipping from the Quebec paper.  It stated that a letter from South America, addressed to Fleury Taschereau, was at the dead letter office.  Any relatives wishing to claim it, do so as he was dead.

Mrs. Poston sent the clipping to Charles F. Taschereau, son of Fleury Taschereau, asking him to write.  He was so long in doing so, the letter had been destroyed.  She regretted not having written herself, because she thought it was from her brother, Drummond.  They never heard from him.

WILLIAM ROSS  (1795-1858)

William Ross, son of J. William Ross and Sarah Blow, was born at Montreal, Province of Lower Canada, on the 14th April, 1795.  He was Deputy Clerk Assistant to the Legislative Assembly of Canada.  He married Harriott Thompson who was born at Quebec City on the 11th January, 1804, and they had seven children - Harriott, Ema Marena Amelia, William Blow, Christina Isabella Elisabeth, Octavius, Allen Napier and David Henry.

The eldest daughter, Harriott, was born on the 16th March, 1827, at Quebec, and she married George Henry Lane, Deputy-Registrar of the Province of Canada.  They had two daughters, Amy and Florence.  Florence married a Mr. Pope (?) and they raised a family but we have no knowledge of them, except that they resided at Ottawa, Ontario.  In five letters, written between 1924 and 1926 by Florence to her cousin, Ella Ross at Loretteville, Quebec, she gave a great deal of information about her grandparents, J. William and Sarah Ross, and her mother's family which has been very helpful in writing about this branch of the Ross family.  She also revealed that the motto on the Ross crest was "Fide et Fiducia" (Faithful and True).

William Blow Ross, their son, was born on the 10th may, 1832, at Quebec, and he married Janet Lugo Fraser on the 15th November, 1855, at Quebec.  They had three children: Frederick Joseph (b. 1860), Francis Harriott (b. 1861), and Clara (b. 1863).  In a letter, written by Florence and dated 15th November, 1924, she wrote "Aunt Lugo is ninety-three you know, but quite bright yet and loves to see company, looks remarkably well too."

Of the other five children of William and Harriott (Thompson) Ross, we only know the dates of their birth and death, and this information is shown on Family Chart No. R-2.

William Ross died on the 22nd July, 1858, at Toronto, Ontario, and his wife, Harriott, died in 1895 at Ottawa, Ontario, at the venerable age of 91.  We have no further knowledge of this branch of the Ross family.

DAVID ALEXANDER ROSS

As interesting as the work of Mr. Henry Ross Wiggs is for what it contains, it is also interesting for what it does not contain.  He has no information on a possible fourth son of J. William Ross, David Alexander, who, according to a Drouin Collection record of his burial, having been "Chief Clerk Inspector Generals Department Quebec - died in Quebec on twentieth day of July A.D. One Thousand Eight Hundred and Sixty One - aged 52 years and was buried in Mount Hermon Cemetery on the twenty-second day of the same month and year." (that would place his birth in 1809.) According to the information I have at this time, he may have had 10 children, representing a fairly large branch of the Ross family.  A quick check of the Dictionary of Canadian Biography does not list anyone in the first three generations of this account.

Update, 26 April 2011: I received an email this morning from a descendant of David Alexander, and with the information she provided found in the Drouin collection a record of the marriage which includes the signature of Sarah Ross, mother, as one of the witnesses.  I am now confident to include this branch in the tree.  Here is part of the email:

I am a descendent of David Alexander Ross and Caroline Elizabeth Blaiklock.  David Alexander was a sibling to:  Clarissa, Drummond, Eliza, Eleanore, William, Samuel and Clarke.  I see you are working diligently on the family tree.
David A. Ross and Caroline Blaiklock had 9 children (I am am offspring of one of those, named David George Bartlett Ross.  The connection is on my maternal grandmother's side.
David George Bartlett Ross married my great grandmother Blanche Louise Hastings.  I have a few pictures as well.

I have a copy of Ross Wiggs extensive family tree sent to me upon my request in the mid-70s.
My mother, Anne Eastwood (Goldie) Land - granddaughter of David & Blanche is still living, and in good health at the age of 97 (this May 20th).

Some names are spelled differently from what appears in some of our online information: for example, Mr. Wiggs spells "Sheila" as "Shelagh".

Having spent most of my life in the Pacific Northwest of the United States, I was not familiar with the suffix, "Q.C."  as used in connection with Francis Ward Primrose.  I am told that "Q.C. here usually means Queen's Council, as in a lawyer. It also seems that they sometimes used "Esquire" which someone told me was probably someone in the legal business also."  Thanks, Wendy.

"QC means Queens Counsel which is an honour still bestowed on lawyers who are recognized by their piers as having contributed significantly to the practice of law. Esquire is what any lawyer was called - interestingly also women lawyers."  Thanks, Sue.

The name of the Judge who handled the probate of the will of J.William Ross caught my attention.
Oliver Perrault was married to Marie-Louise Taschereau, my 2nd great grand aunt, daughter of Glabriel-Elzear Taschereau, my 3rd great grandfather.  Here is a link to the Dictionary of Canadian Biography on Oliver Perrault:  http://www.biographi.ca/009004-119.01-e.php?&id_nbr=3067&interval=25&&PHPSESSID=9lb450q5c6tcmn0vitn1nt4eo5

The Feb. 23, 2011 post on THE ROSS FAMILY includes mention in one paragraph of a Ross Family Tree at the end of the book; however, that tree will not be published in this blog because (1) the format does not lend itself to this blog; (2) any other pertinent information contained therein will already have been included in the Family Charts; and (3) those particularly interested will already have that information available to them at Ancestry.com.
