WILLIAM ROSS  (1795-1858)

William Ross, son of J. William Ross and Sarah Blow, was born at Montreal, Province of Lower Canada, on the 14th April, 1795.  He was Deputy Clerk Assistant to the Legislative Assembly of Canada.  He married Harriott Thompson who was born at Quebec City on the 11th January, 1804, and they had seven children - Harriott, Ema Marena Amelia, William Blow, Christina Isabella Elisabeth, Octavius, Allen Napier and David Henry.

The eldest daughter, Harriott, was born on the 16th March, 1827, at Quebec, and she married George Henry Lane, Deputy-Registrar of the Province of Canada.  They had two daughters, Amy and Florence.  Florence married a Mr. Pope (?) and they raised a family but we have no knowledge of them, except that they resided at Ottawa, Ontario.  In five letters, written between 1924 and 1926 by Florence to her cousin, Ella Ross at Loretteville, Quebec, she gave a great deal of information about her grandparents, J. William and Sarah Ross, and her mother's family which has been very helpful in writing about this branch of the Ross family.  She also revealed that the motto on the Ross crest was "Fide et Fiducia" (Faithful and True).

William Blow Ross, their son, was born on the 10th may, 1832, at Quebec, and he married Janet Lugo Fraser on the 15th November, 1855, at Quebec.  They had three children: Frederick Joseph (b. 1860), Francis Harriott (b. 1861), and Clara (b. 1863).  In a letter, written by Florence and dated 15th November, 1924, she wrote "Aunt Lugo is ninety-three you know, but quite bright yet and loves to see company, looks remarkably well too."

Of the other five children of William and Harriott (Thompson) Ross, we only know the dates of their birth and death, and this information is shown on Family Chart No. R-2.

William Ross died on the 22nd July, 1858, at Toronto, Ontario, and his wife, Harriott, died in 1895 at Ottawa, Ontario, at the venerable age of 91.  We have no further knowledge of this branch of the Ross family.

DAVID ALEXANDER ROSS

As interesting as the work of Mr. Henry Ross Wiggs is for what it contains, it is also interesting for what it does not contain.  He has no information on a possible fourth son of J. William Ross, David Alexander, who, according to a Drouin Collection record of his burial, having been "Chief Clerk Inspector Generals Department Quebec - died in Quebec on twentieth day of July A.D. One Thousand Eight Hundred and Sixty One - aged 52 years and was buried in Mount Hermon Cemetery on the twenty-second day of the same month and year." (that would place his birth in 1809.) According to the information I have at this time, he may have had 10 children, representing a fairly large branch of the Ross family.  A quick check of the Dictionary of Canadian Biography does not list anyone in the first three generations of this account.
_________________________________________________________________________

Update, 26 April 2011: I received an email this morning from a descendant of David Alexander, and with the information she provided found in the Drouin collection a record of the marriage which includes the signature of Sarah Ross, mother, as one of the witnesses.  I am now confident to include this branch in the tree.  Here is part of the email:

I am a descendent of David Alexander Ross and Caroline Elizabeth Blaiklock.  David Alexander was a sibling to:  Clarissa, Drummond, Eliza, Eleanore, William, Samuel and Clarke.  I see you are working diligently on the family tree.
David A. Ross and Caroline Blaiklock had 9 children (I am am offspring of one of those, named David George Bartlett Ross.  The connection is on my maternal grandmother's side.
David George Bartlett Ross married my great grandmother Blanche Louise Hastings.  I have a few pictures as well.

I have a copy of Ross Wiggs extensive family tree sent to me upon my request in the mid-70s.
My mother, Anne Eastwood (Goldie) Land - granddaughter of David & Blanche is still living, and in good health at the age of 97 (this May 20th).
_________________________________________________________________________

Some names are spelled differently from what appears in some of our online information: for example, Mr. Wiggs spells "Sheila" as "Shelagh".

Having spent most of my life in the Pacific Northwest of the United States, I was not familiar with the suffix, "Q.C."  as used in connection with Francis Ward Primrose.  I am told that "Q.C. here usually means Queen's Council, as in a lawyer. It also seems that they sometimes used "Esquire" which someone told me was probably someone in the legal business also."  Thanks, Wendy.

"QC means Queens Counsel which is an honour still bestowed on lawyers who are recognized by their piers as having contributed significantly to the practice of law. Esquire is what any lawyer was called - interestingly also women lawyers."  Thanks, Sue.

The name of the Judge who handled the probate of the will of J.William Ross caught my attention.
Oliver Perrault was married to Marie-Louise Taschereau, my 2nd great grand aunt, daughter of Glabriel-Elzear Taschereau, my 3rd great grandfather.  Here is a link to the Dictionary of Canadian Biography on Oliver Perrault:  http://www.biographi.ca/009004-119.01-e.php?&id_nbr=3067&interval=25&&PHPSESSID=9lb450q5c6tcmn0vitn1nt4eo5

The Feb. 23, 2011 post on THE ROSS FAMILY includes mention in one paragraph of a Ross Family Tree at the end of the book; however, that tree will not be published in this blog because (1) the format does not lend itself to this blog; (2) any other pertinent information contained therein will already have been included in the Family Charts; and (3) those particularly interested will already have that information available to them at Ancestry.com.

J. WILLIAM ROSS biography & will

________________________
________________________

J. WILLIAM ROSS  (17   -1824?)

     J. William Ross might be considered the "Founder" of his branch of the Ross family that emigrated from Scotland in the latter part of the eighteenth century to settle in Quebec after the conquest.  The date and place of his birth are unknown, but it has been said that "he came from the Highlands of Scotland and spoke Gaelic."  At first he resided in the Town of Kingston in the Province of Upper Canada and owned "twelve hundred acres of land in the Township of Pickering" in that Province.

Later he resided in the City of Quebec where he was Deputy Assistant Commissary General to the forces of his Majesty King George III (1760-1820) stationed at Quebec.  "He appeared at a ball in Quebec in Highland costume, and fell in love with the lady to whom (another man) was engaged."  She was Sarah Blow, "a very handsome woman", said to be the daughter of Admiral Blow but we have no knowledge of when or where she was born.

Either William Ross or Sarah Blow was related to Neil Primrose, third Earl of Rosebery, Dalmeny Castle, Linlithgowshire, Scotland, whose second son, the Honourable Francis Ward Primrose, Q. C. (1785-1860), their "nephew", resided in the City of Quebec and died there.  He and his two sons and his daughter are all buried in Mount Hermon cemetery, Sillery, Quebec.

William Ross and Sarah Blow were married on the 25th March 1794 at St. Andrew's Church, Ste. Anne Street, Quebec City, "The oldest Congregation of the Presbyterian Church in Canada."  They had six children, three sons, William, Samuel Blow, and Drummond, and three daughters, Eliza, Eleanore and Clarisse Catherine.  We have no further knowledge of the three daughters; the dates of their birth, whether they ever married, or when they died.  Of the three sons, however, we have considerable information.

Their son William, born the 14th April, 1795, was Deputy Clerk Assistant of the Legislative Assembly of Canada.  He married Harriott Thompson (b. 11th January, 1804) of Quebec, and by her had seven children.  He died the 22nd July, 1858 at Toronto, Ontario.  Samuel Blow Ross in 1820 was an ensign in His Majesty's Seventy Sixth Regiment of Foot at Quebec.  There is no record of his birth or death.

Drummond Ross, their third son, born at Quebec, was baptized at St. Andrew's Church.  He married Maria Jame Beamish, daughter of William and Marguretta Beamish, in 1835 and they had ten children.  their names and other items about him and his family are contained in the separate biography of Drummond Ross.

The last will and testament of J. William Ross was signed by him in the presence of witnesses on the 6th of October, 1820, and it was probated on the 23rd of January, 1824, after his death, the exact date of which is not known.  He was survived by his widow and all his children.  A true copy of this legal document and the probate thereof follows:

CONCLUDING NOTES BY COUSIN SAM

On Monday, February 21 of this Year (2011), I began transcribing and  posting much of the content of "ROSS FAMILY RECORD" self published by Henry Ross Wiggs in 1971.  It contains a preface, acknowledgements, and over 40 family charts, plus biographical sketches, and other information.  I have included some additional information and updates, and will try to add any new information I may receive.

On April 22, I completed that transcription with the exception of charts R-39, R-40, and $-41, which have now (July 26) been included in this post.

As I understand, Mr. Wiggs made a number of copies of the Ross Family Record for the descendants of Maria Jane Beamish, and one of the copies came to me with some old family albums and scrap books.   He wrote out his charts by hand, copied them with the technology of that time, and put them together in 8 1/2 by 11 portfolio covers.  The pages are now yellowed, and the ink beginning to fade, but it is a treasure to be shared, and not kept hidden in a storage box in a dark closet.

Anyone having additional information, items of interest, or corrections is invited to either leave a comment or, preferably, send it to me at rfsamt@gmail.com
