News of the Trump/Tsai Ing-wen phone convo exploded into the mediasphere on Friday night and learned and unlearned predictions of dire consequences raged for a good four hours until the PRC government issued an anodyne statement that characterized the phone call as “a petty trick” by Taiwan. By placing the onus on Taiwan, the PRC was indulging Trump’s tweeted version of events, which is that Tsai had called him, not the other way around.  Awkwardly, original reports out of Taiwan had characterized the phone call as initiated by Trump through the good offices of Stephen Yates, a pro-Taiwan hardliner in the Republican Party.

MSNBC Sees MSM Turning Whites vs Immigrants; Frets 'Silent Collaborators' With Racism
On Saturday's AM Joy on MSNBC, during a discussion of recent instances of apparent Donald Trump supporters being recorded in public places being rowdy and sometimes saying racist things to strangers, former CNN correspondent Maria Hinojosa complained that the "mainstream media" have caused whites to be afraid of immigrants. And, moments later, guest Tim Wise -- identified as an "anti-racism educator" -- fretted about whether "white folks" would be "silent collaborators" with racists rather than opposing them. Of course, MSNBC won't let the truth get in the way of building a racially-charged "us vs. them" narrative.

The political impact on gun sales

Kinder Morgan Pipeline Might Be Canada’s DAPL
In the end, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, for all his suave talk of being a new progressive politician, who would era in a new type of politics, turned out disappointingly to be like all the rest. His suit is cut from the same old cloth.

Dakota Access Pipeline Permit Denied
In a long-awaited victory for the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has denied a permit for the Dakota Access Pipeline, tribal leadership announced late Sunday. The agency will not allow the pipeline to be built under Lake Oahe, a reservoir near the tribal reservation, without a full environmental impact assessment that examines alternative routes for the pipeline.

The Internet Can’t Get Over the House Science Committee’s Climate-Denying Tweet—and That’s a Good Thing
On Thursday the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology tweeted some good ole fashioned climate denial—you know, the old tired long discredited nonsensical claim that cold weather negates the global consensus of scientists that climate change is happening (It doesn’t.).  The scientific community and the news media did not let this go unnoticed and that’s a good thing for our continuing to hold decision makers accountable for respecting science under a Trump administration.

Donald Trump Can Save the Dakota Access Pipeline
Just yesterday, the Army Corps of Engineers sided with the radical left’s out-of-touch stance on DAPL by agreeing to reroute the much-needed pipeline. This decision was irrational, politically-motivated, and harmful to thousands of families whose lives could be improved by the project’s supply of jobs and the generation of tax revenue for struggling communities.

What the EU will learn from Trump's Taiwan blunder
Donald Trump has landed himself in hot water with China by breaching protocol on Taiwan, but unlike the US president-elect, the EU's approach to the island is marked by extreme caution. The EU has dealt carefully with Taiwan to steer clear of trouble with Beijing, and Donald Trump's latest gaffe is likely to reaffirm that approach.

Why Trump was right to talk with Taiwan's president
On Friday, Trump received a congratulatory call from Taiwan’s president, Tsai Ing-wen, in which the leaders briefly touched upon economic, political, and security-related ties between our two democracies.  Trump congratulated Tsai on her own victory in Taiwanese elections earlier in the year—a watershed since Tsai is the first woman leader in Asia who isn’t the daughter or wife of a previous leader. Trump is adhering to the what he made clear throughout the presidential campaign: that he will be open to talking to foreign leaders who want good relations with the United States.

Roster of local Pearl Harbor survivors peaked in mid-1990s
Of the 16 million Americans who were in uniform at some point during World War II, no more than about 80,000 could give an eyewitness account from ground zero to VJ Day. They were the soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines who survived the attack that triggered America’s entry into the world’s first truly global war.
