Japanese Army Raises Flag Over Chinchow

CHINCHOW, Manchuria, Jan. 2. (AP) — For the first time in centuries of history the Rising Sun flag flew over this city today, signifying its capture by a Japanese army.
The first victorious brigade marched in early this afternoon and took over the city without firing a shot.  There was not one Chinese defender in the city, for the last troop train had left several hours earlier, rolling down toward Shanhaikwan and the great wall at the end of a disordered exodus which began several days ago.
The Japanese had taken their time on the way down from the Taling river, 15 miles to the north, so that the Chinese could complete the evacuation.
Having taken this last Chinese stronghold, it was possible that the Japanese might keep right on along the Peiping-Mukden railway to Shanhaikwan, the real gateway to Manchuria, in the shadow of the great wall.

Chinese Cheer.

As the Japanese swung into the main street of this city, the Chinese citizenry — men, women, and children — lined the curb cheering and waving Japanese flags, many of which looked as though they had been made in a hurry overnight.
The captors took over the headquarters building of the Chinese provincial government and issued a proclamation in the name of General Honjo requesting the Chinese civil officials to remain in office and the civilian population to go on with normal business as usual.

Scene in Postoffice After Big Bomb Exploded

The nervous actions of two men who placed seven packages in the mails in the postoffice at Easton, Pa., aroused the suspicions of mail clerks and led them to open one of the packages.  it contained an infernal machine that exploded, jarred one in another package into action, killed two clerks and injured two.  All of the packages contained bombs, and one exploded and probably fatally injured Charles V. Weaver, city explosion expert, as he was discharging it.  The dead are Edward Werkheiser and John House.  The bombs were addressed to prominent Italians in New York and Pittsburgh, and the Argentine consulate in Baltimore; it is believed they were the work of anti-fascists.  This telephoto shows the interior of the Easton, Pa., postoffice after it had been ripped by the explosions.

FORECAST TRUCE IN GANDHI MESS

BOMBAY, India, Jan. 2. (AP) — There were indications today that a truce might be reached by Mahatma Gandhi and the British government in India to avert resumption of the civil disobedience campaign.
Powerful influences were at work to persuade Viceroy Lord Willingdon to receive Mr. Gandhi without placing any restrictions upon the matters to be discussed.  heretofore the viceroy has insisted that he will not permit discussion of the recently enacted provincial ordinances extending the power of local authorities to deal with political disorders.
Many telegrams have been sent to Lord Willingdon by business interests which feel that another nationalist campaign would precipitate a grave economic crisis, and Sir Tej Bahadur Sapru was active in negotiations to prevent war.
