When Archbishop Thomas Cranmer produced his 1549 Prayer Book, the stated aim was to enable people to worship in familiar language. Every year the Prayer Book Society (founded in 1972) distributes free copies of the 17th-century book to first-year theological students. This year for the first time it is including a a glossary bookmark (also accessible online). “The language is quite [Shakespearean],” said Tim Stanley, the society’s media officer, who conceived the idea. “It’s very beautiful but it’s very ancient, and there are some words in it which modern readers might find difficult to understand.”
The sea change
Mark Clavier: A sea change has occurred during the past decade or more that has transformed the ministry. The old virtues are no longer valued or, at the very least, are appreciated less than new virtues that resonate with the expectations of our age. Someone with a background in management or working with children will probably excite search committees and even many ministry officers more than someone who has been a New Testament scholar or a theologian.

The rector of the Novosibirsk St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, Archpriest Alexander Novopashin, re-consecrated a monument to Tsar-Martyr Nicholas II and Tsarevich Alexei on Friday, restored after it was damaged by vandals. The monument to the Royal Martyrs was initially consecrated on July 16 this year by Metropolitan Tikhon of Novosibirsk and Berdsk. The monument was attacked less than two weeks later when a 31-year-old Novosibirsk man placed a ladder against the newly-consecrated monument, and, having climbed up it, dealt several blows with an axe. Security officers happened to pass by at the time and were able to detain the vandal and hand him over to the police. Motive and cost of damages are yet to be established. “The tsar’s murder was not some political assassination. By that time the emperor had no political power. But he remained anointed of God, the center of spiritual power in the country, and therefore to spiritually decapitate Russia, the Bolsheviks killed him and his entire family. It was a blow to the soul of the Russian people,” Fr. Alexander emphasized.
A tenth century Georgian Orthodox monastery of historic importance found in the northeastern Turkish village of Altiparmak is set to be restored by a group of both Georgian and Turkish experts. The team from the National Agency for Cultural Heritage Preservation of Georgia and the State Academy of Arts began its work on Parkhali Monastery on Saturday. The monastery was built by Georgian Orthodox Church figure Gregory of Khandzta under the reign of Georgia’s King Davit III Kuropalates sometime before 973. The monastery is known as the place where The Martyrdom of the Holy Queen Shushanik—one of the oldest Georgian hagiographies—was copied and preserved.
