Fate of quake-damaged cathedral to be decided in September
The Anglican Church in New Zealand has said the future of ChristChurch Cathedral, which has been derelict since an earthquake six years ago, will be decided this September. The Synod of the Diocese of Christchurch will rule on whether the cathedral should be restored—or demolished and replaced with a contemporary building. Local officials involved with the city's regeneration have been pressing for a resolution and campaigners have called for immediate government intervention to restore the iconic cathedral.

The CBO's Forecasts Are Bogus
Today the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) will announce the score of the American Health Care Act (AHCA), the Trump administration’s plan to replace Obamacare. The House of Representatives has already voted on and passed the AHCA, despite not having a score from CBO, an element that has added more controversy to an already controversial bill. The House’s actions underscore a deeper problem within the process of legislating – CBO does not disclose its methods for scoring bills to the public, leaving policy makers and legislators at the mercy of their timing and expertise. The ballyhooed CBO forecast of the health-care legislation is totally worthless.

How Foreign Aid Hurts Famine Relief in Somalia
Somalia is on the verge of a catastrophic humanitarian crisis and it needs urgent assistance. However, donors should invest in long-term development projects instead of relying on typical, ineffective, forms of relief. Donations fall into corrupt hands, but technology actually helps the people.

Don't Waste Your Talents in Government
If you had to choose between working for Google or the federal government, which would you choose?

Yes, it Is a Virtue to Reject Charity
The idea of rejecting charity means that you take charge of your own life, regardless of pressures around you to do otherwise. Government does everything possible to rope people into the role of dependency. Whether it is student loans, Obamacare, or just guilt tripping us all to love the highways and glorious national defense we get for our tax dollars, we are supposed to feel forever on the hook, forever grateful and beholden to our masters. Forever indentured. This is not the attitude of a free people.

Europe is committing demographic suicide, systematically depopulating itself in what British historian Niall Ferguson has called “the greatest sustained reduction in European population since the Black Death in the fourteenth century.” This unwillingness to create the future in the most elemental sense, by creating new generations, is at the root of many of Europe’s problems, including its difficulties assimilating immigrants and its fiscal distress. When an entire continent—healthier, wealthier, and more secure than ever before—deliberately chooses sterility, the most basic cause for that must lie in the realm of the human spirit, in a certain souring about the very mystery of being.

IVANKA, JARED, AND THE JEWISH SABBATH
This great country has come a long way from when Jews had to choose between their jobs and the Ten Commandments. Let us not let the Trump media frenzy take us back to that unpleasant time. Democrats and Republicans agree that policy decisions can directly save lives, but that not every decision is so vital as to demand immediate attention. Careful consideration must be given to each circumstance, recognizing the weight of thousands of years of Jewish tradition.

Donald Trump’s Anti-Russia Agenda
Politically, no story is hotter than the one about Donald Trump and the Russians. If the Trump administration is supposed to be colluding with the Russians, they’re doing a terrible job of it.

In their efforts to legitimize and humanize a procedure that most people find unpalatable at best, pro‑abortionists often claim that abortion is much safer than childbirth. Let us examine the facts: is abortion safer than giving birth?

Of course we could do more to stop terrorism – if we’re willing to live in a police state
The only way to stop this sort of human monster completely is to become like them. It is not cowardly to stay with our anger and our grief and refuse to let those emotions sway our commitment to human dignity.

What the debate over troops on the streets is missing
Security decisions are taken by professionals not politicians. But that doesn't mean there isn't a political context. There are 1340 fewer armed specialists in the police than there were seven years ago – a number that is more significant in the light of another: 900, the number of soldiers that will be deployed on British streets under Operation Temperer.
