Religious minorities in Bangladesh 'victims of intolerance and persecution'
“Bangladesh’s religious minorities have been facing attacks since the 2014 national election.' During the elections, minority-dominated villages were the worst-attacked places, where individuals and groups associated with pro-Islamist parties looted and burned properties and residences owned by members of Hindu, Christian and Buddhist religions in different parts of the country. Some political parties deliberately used the religious sentiments of ordinary people to intensify communal and religious tensions and polarizations for political advantages,” a pastoral solidarity team of the Christian Conference of Asia (CCA) was told by representatives of different religious groups in Bangladesh. As a direct result of the frequent attacks by extremist groups in the country, religious minorities in Bangladesh are also vulnerable to illegal land grabbing. At least 431,000 people continue to live in displacement as a result of past conflicts and ongoing violence in the country. Indigenous people and religious minorities have been disproportionately affected by this violence and the resulting protracted and new displacement.

The Progressives Took Away Our Right to Contract. It's Time to Reclaim It
What those who want more freedom and flexibility at work need is a restored right to earn a living. A good start is Arizona’s recent Right to Earn a Living Act, first proposed by the Goldwater Institute, which allows people to challenge regulations that get in the way of their livelihood. Yet more is needed. At both the federal and state level, legislators and regulators need to start decoupling social goals from the employment contract. Reforming the health care system to make it easier for consumers to purchase insurance on their own would be a good start. So would be tax reform that reduces the federal government’s dependence on income taxes and with it the need for withholding.

The Handmaid's Tale Is a Collectivist Dystopia
Following Trump’s win in November, sales of George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four skyrocketed to unprecedented levels as comparisons between present-day America and Orwell’s fictional nation of Oceania have become commonplace rhetoric. Now, a popular new series is adding to the Trump hysteria while neglecting to recognize that without government force, no such dystopian society would be able to exist. Instead of arguing amongst each other and using hyperbole to further political agendas, the American people would be wise to realize that the mere existence of state power will always leave individuals open to an oppression that reeks of dystopia.

Eleven Big Problems with the New French President
Even though there are plenty of reasons to be happy about the defeat of Marine Le Pen in the French presidential election, the new president Emmanuel Macron, with his stance on the EU and his questionable positions on economic interventionism, likewise deserves some pro-liberty opposition.

THE CHURCH AND CIVIL POWER
The church’s stance with regard to civil order is neatly articulated in Romans, provided we read chapters 12-13 together. Eschatology is key to grasping the church's relation to civil order. The church is an outpost of a future city.

A HILLARIAN LESSON FOR CHURCH LEADERS
The fundamental reasons for one of the greatest upsets in American presidential history were that Hillary Clinton was unable to articulate a compelling reason for her candidacy. Hillary Clinton still doesn’t get that she was the reason she lost. What can the Church learn from the failures of Clintonworld?

Yucca Mountain: The Department of Energy Should Take Steps Now While Awaiting Funding
The President’s budget requests $120 million for the Department of Energy (DOE) “to restart licensing activities for the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository and initiate a robust interim storage program.” Yet Congress again provided no funding. The Trump Administration needs to move expeditiously on nuclear waste issues after eight years of delay under the Obama Administration. Even as Congress delays funding and works through draft legislation on nuclear waste management, there are some things the DOE can do now to prepare for completing the agreed upon process to review a license for Yucca Mountain.

US Household Debt Rises to All-Time Highs
Following the 2008 financial crisis, many observers were surprised by how much many Americans began saving. From 2009 to 2012, total household debt fell considerably, dropping by more than 12 percent from 2008 to 2013. According to the Wall Street Journal, that drop was described by Fed researchers as “an aberration from what had been a 63-year upward trend reflecting the depth, duration and aftermath of the Great Recession.” Since 2013, though, household debt has again marched upward. And now, according to the New York Fed, household debt in the US has now topped its previous pre-crisis level.

Big load to cause big delays on local highways next week
Drivers probably should not plan to travel on SR 155 late Monday night/Tuesday morning, nor early Wednesday morning when a huge piece of equipment will be blocking traffic up to 90 minutes at a time. An Oregon company will be moving a million pounds along the route from Coulee City to Grand Coulee, then up SR 174 on Wednesday morning to an electrical “substation” just north of Grand Coulee, said Mark Richardson, project manager for Omega Morgan in Hillsboro, Oregon. The payload is a large transformer being shipped in on an emergency basis after a “catastrophic failure” the Bureau of Reclamation suffered a few weeks ago, Richardson said.
[Update] The company planning the move of the big transformer has delayed the move after "discrepancies" were noted during a "weigh and measure" session with the state Department of Transportation, the company said. No word yet on a new schedule.
