Beirut: mystery surrounds the murder of anti-Hizbollah leader Chatah
No one has claimed responsibility for the car bomb that killed the former minister and four other people yesterday in the Lebanese capital, leaving more than 50 injured. Hizbollah and Syria have denied any involvement. The reasons behind the attack remain unclear. The victim was opposed to Assad and served as a political advisor to Lebanon's late Prime Minister Rafik Hariri and his son Saad.

North Korean Christians celebrate Christmas in secret underground tunnels
A refugee from Kim's regime says "there are secret places where the faithful, in groups of two or three, come together to perform religious functions." In the South, a Protestant church, led by Rev Chun, brought together the exiles for the birth of Jesus.

Christmas in Bangladesh: the mission is stronger than political violence
PIME's regional superior in Bangladesh reviews 2013, a year of great turmoil but also of success, like the Tong Khyang Para hostel, open to ethnic Marma and Tripura youth; or the "House of Tenderness" in Rajshahi, which gave three disabled girls their independence; or the Street Kid Festival, now in its eighth edition.

Bogor: Yasmin Church members celebrate Christmas outdoors after Islamists seize their church
Despite two favourable Supreme Court rulings and two years of waiting, Protestant Christians in West Java still cannot use their place of worship after it was sealed off under pressure from fundamentalists. Christmas services are held under the protection of more than 300 police and security agents. Underground religious activities show what "freedom for minorities" means in "modern and democratic" Indonesia, Christian leader says.

The Egyptian population is exacerbated by Islamic terrorists, says Catholic Church spokesman
For Fr Rafic Greiche, "Islamists are trying to sow terror in the population to influence the outcome of the referendum on the Constitution." Egyptian authorities fear more terrorist attacks after a car bomb strikes a police station in Mansoura and a bus blows up near the al-Azhar university.

One-child policy eased as laojiao centres close
The Standing Committee of the National People's Congress announces the decision today. Easing the one-child policy should only result in "a slight increase in births," as the state will retain power over population controls. Re-education through labour centres will also be abolished, but all standing legal laojiao penalties remain in place and no one released will be able to suit his or her jailers. Bishops and priests imprisoned for years should be able to return to their dioceses. The abolition of laojiao could however just be a cosmetic operation.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani Reaches Out to Christians; Leaders Reject ‘Hollow Words’
The Iranian President Hassan Rouhani reached out symbolically to Christians over the Christmas holiday. The statements that came in multiple venues and were addressed both to Christians globally and specifically to Iranian Christians. However, the rights of Christians in Iran continue to be under assault and under Rouhani seemed to have worsened, despite the rhetoric.

Indonesian President Urges Religious Tolerance at Christmas Celebration
President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono made comments at a recent Christmas celebration urging Indonesians to reject "extreme and radical behavior" and to take responsibility for promoting religious tolerance in the country. Unfortunately the president has taken practically no steps to reduce or correct serious ongoing incidents of religious discrimination, including the cases of the GKY Yasmin and HKBP Filadelfia churches, both shut down by radical groups and local governments despite Supreme Court rulings in their favor. In fact religious intolerance across Indonesia has risen steadily for the past several years, with members of the Ahmadiyya Muslims community especially facing severe violence at the hands of the Sunni majority.

Christians Massacred Worldwide: Where is the Outrage?
The following opinion editorial by Dr. Halee Gray Scott takes a look at a few of the major incidents of Christian persecution over the past year and asks why their is a lack of outrage on the part of the Western church. Dr. Scott points out the enormous amount of support received by Christian celebrity Phil Robertson (Duck Dynasty) and Christian owned business Chick-fil-A but the seeming lack of concern at violent persecution taking place around the world. With a very minimum of 100 Christians martyred for their faith every month, most of the Western church seems unaware of or unwilling to speak out about the issue.

Christmas Opens the Door for Christianity in Nepal
On Christmas day, churches across Nepal were filled with Christians, Hindus and Buddhists celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ. In the past, non-Christians in Nepal had only bought into the commercialized side of Christmas. This year, there seemed to be a real interest in Christ's birth and Christianity coming from the non-Christian communities. Pray that this is only the beginning of a year long movement in Nepal.

Boko Haram Threatens Further Violence in Nigeria
As citizens of Nigeria's northeastern states attempt to elect local councils, the Islamic terrorist group Boko Haram has threatened further violence against the Nigerian state and Christians. In a video sent to the Nigerian media, Boko Haram's leader said that they would be perpetrating acts of violence against Christians during the holy month of December. So far no attack has taken place but many Nigerian Christians fear the possibility that they will be targeted.
