For nearly a century, Washington’s farmworkers have been denied the basic labor rights afforded to nearly all other private sector workers. The results have been poor wages, dangerous working conditions, retaliation against union organizers, and conflicts between workers and management that drag on for years without the neutral arbitration that government provides to other industries. But a bill working through the Washington Legislature would change that, placing farmworkers in the state, along with the unions that represent them, under the purview of the Public Employment Relations Commission, or PERC.
