After cutting nearly one trillion dollars from Medicaid over the next decade, the Trump administration is distributing one-time funds for state governments to shore up struggling rural hospitals. Despite having a larger rural population than Idaho, Washington received millions of dollars less.

While a recent report found Spokane County has many great resources to address behavioral and mental health issues, members of the privately led Safe and Healthy Spokane task force will spend the next few months figuring out the best recommendations for how local officials can ensure systems work better together and invest in improvements.

When a local real estate agent announced in December the sale of a $14 million ranch in the remote northeast Washington town of Cusick to an anonymous Silicon Valley billionaire, speculation as to the identity of the buyer was only natural.  Less attention, however, has been paid to the identity of the seller, which went unmentioned in nearly all press coverage of the sale: a holding company formerly owned by Russian billionaire, self-professed bank fraudster and accused money launderer Sergey Grishin, who died in Moscow, Russia, under murky circumstances in 2023.

Conversion is a gift of grace, yet human hands participate in God’s providence. In her new book, Melanie McDonagh provides a narrative for the rise of converts between the 1890s and the 1950s. Similar accounts have been given before—notably Joseph Pearce’s Literary Converts—but McDonagh’s book is peculiarly ambitious in bringing to light the conversion stories of all kinds of artists and intellectuals: writers, painters, poets, philosophers.
