Sarah Mullally appointed bishop of London
A woman has been appointed as the bishop of London, the third position in the Church of England, in a move that delighted campaigners for gender equality but is likely to dismay conservatives in the church. Sarah Mullally, the bishop of Crediton, has been appointed the 133rd bishop of London, Downing Street announced. She will automatically take a seat in the House of Lords and the post-holder is traditionally dean of the royal chapels. Before becoming a priest, she worked as a nurse in NHS hospitals in the capital, including St Thomas’ and the Royal Marsden, and became chief nursing officer in 1999. She was ordained as a priest in 2001 and made a dame in recognition of her services to nursing in 2005. Mullally told reporters: “I respect those that cannot accept my ministry as a bishop because I am a woman.”

In 1 Chart, What’s in the Final Tax Reform Bill
The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act is the most sweeping update to the U.S. tax code in more than 30 years. The recently released conference report would lower taxes on business and individuals, and unleash higher wages, more jobs, and untold opportunity through a larger and more dynamic economy. The conference report is a serious effort to reform a complex and badly broken system that provides significant tax relief to the vast majority of tax-paying Americans.

Network Neutrality Comes to an End
The Federal Communications Commission voted on Dec. 14 to eliminate the network neutrality rules it imposed on broadband network operators during the Obama era. Dire predictions are not supported by any facts or any theory. The real threat to the Internet comes not from too little government interference in its management, but from too much.

Who Wouldn’t Have Coverage If the Obamacare Mandate Is Repealed
The prospect that Congress might zero-out Obamacare’s individual mandate penalty in the pending tax bill has sent Obamacare defenders into flights of pessimistic rhetoric, up to and including the charge that “thousands will die” as a result.

What is missing in the George Bell case?
What happens when the Church defends its reputation in the court of public appeal, rather than seeking justice in the court of law? Liam Allan was studying criminology at Greenwich University—but after he started, a woman with whom he had had a sexual relationship accused him of repeatedly raping her and sexually assaulting her. He was on bail for two years, and in court for three days, before the case against him collapsed and was dismissed. The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) had failed to disclose a disk containing information about phone records, either to the defence team or to their own prosecution barrister, in order to save money in pursuing the case. When the judge ordered the disclosure, the disk turned out to hold 40,000 messages in which the woman had repeatedly pestered Liam Allan, talked of boasting to her friends about their sexual relationship, and discussed her fantasies of being raped and having violent sex.
