THE people responsible for training the next generation of Anglican clergy — the principals of theological colleges and courses — have said that the system is in crisis. Just as the Church of England seeks to expand the number of ordinands by 50 per cent, the leaders of the theological education institutions (TEIs) have told this paper that the training process is “totally underfunded”, “starved of funds”, and “quite likely to collapse”. The Principal of St Augustine’s College, Kent (until 2015, the South East Institute of Theological Education), the Revd Dr Alan Gregory, said in reply an enquiry: “I agree that the financial situation is a critical one. We are like the story of the donkey whose feed was reduced until he dropped down dead. We are almost in the position of the donkey every year.”

Rep. Chris Smith: ‘Killing of Baby’ in Abortion Is Not Health Care
One politician is calling on the media to report “coercion, not in America,” when it comes to health care professionals who refuse to participate in abortion. On Wednesday, Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ) hosted a Capitol Hill press conference in support of the Conscience Protection Act of 2017 with other lawmakers and pro-life leaders. The bill protects the conscience of those in federally-funded health care systems who object to performing or participating in abortion. Nurses, whom the legislation would affect, testified at the event.

Tim McGraw, Faith Hill Push Gun Control: NRA Should ‘Tell The Truth’
Celebrities who don’t understand the meaning of political debates should stop alienating their audiences and keep to themselves. While the majority of country singers practice this, two of the biggest country stars have decided to throw caution to the wind when it comes to the gun control debate. Faith Hill and Tim McGraw announced in an interview with Billboard: “They both support gun control.”

CBS’s ‘Young Sheldon' Wants to ‘Destroy’ Pastor of Small-Town Texas Church
When the horrific shooting in Vegas occurred last month, Hollywood rightly cancelled two movie premieres and edited at least one television show out of respect for the victims of the tragedy. But CBS’s Young Sheldon (a prequel spinoff of The Big Bang Theory) felt it was okay to air an episode, immediately after the shooting at a small-town Texas church, that depicted a small-town Texas church service with main character Sheldon (Iain Armitage) stating that he wanted to “destroy” his pastor to prove that God does not exist. In the Thursday, November 9 episode, “Poker, Faith and Eggs,” Sheldon attends church with his family and is bothered so much by the obviously not-so-bright pastor’s message, that he felt the need to speak up in the middle of the service. I have been a Christian all my life and I have never seen a priest or pastor explain faith the way this pastor did. Either it’s a deliberate, disrespectful attempt to make the pastor appear dim-witted and weak on faith, or it’s a sign that Hollywood has no idea what it’s talking about when it comes to matters of the Christian faith. Maybe a little bit of both. And to have a young child wishing to “destroy” the pastor after the Texas tragedy that left 26 people dead, including more than a dozen children? Just gross. Hollywood, you’re missing out on something really special when you deny and disrespect faith. But it’s never too late to accept this free gift. All you have to do is believe.

WATCH: New York Nurse Gives Emotional Speech About Being Forced To Participate In An Abortion Against Her Will

On Wednesday, several nurses spoke publicly in favor of the Conscience Protection Act of 2017, legislation sponsored by Rep. Diane Black (R-TN), which "would allow health-care providers like nurses and doctors to sue if they’re coerced into participating in abortions or if they face discrimination at work for refusing to do so," reports The Hill. It would also provide legal recourse for hospitals, health systems, religious charities, churches and insurance companies who are required to participate in or provide coverage for abortion. One nurse in particular, Cathy DeCarlo, told a harrowing story. In 2009, she was forced to help a doctor perform an abortion: "I never thought in America that I would be forced to violate my conscience in that way."

Roy Moore's alleged pursuit of a young girl is the symptom of a larger problem in evangelical circles
We need to talk about the segment of American culture that probably doesn't think the allegations against Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore are particularly damning, the segment that will blanch at only two accusations in the Washington Post expose: He pursued a 14-year-old-girl without first getting her parents' permission, and he initiated sexual contact outside of marriage. That segment is evangelicalism. In that world, which Moore travels in and I grew up in, 14-year-old girls courting adult men isn't uncommon.

“REVOLUTION”, AND OTHER WORD TRAPS
There is, finally, that mystery of words, which helps us understand why “orange” and other “color” revolutions have ended not with the promised improvements in life, but with something entirely the opposite. “Long live the revolution!” thus was the exclamation of the English royalists, who had waited so long, and finally saw, the fall of Cromwell and the coronation of Charles II. No, there is no sarcasm here; it’s all perfectly serious. It’s just that with the passing of time, not a few words have changed in meaning to become their diametric opposite. Hand in hand with the corruption of the original meaning of the word “absolutism”, goes the corruption in the meaning of the word, “revolution”.

Calif. NAACP Demands 'Racist' 'Star-Spangled Banner' Be Removed as National Anthem
The California chapter of the NAACP are prepping a new campaign for when state lawmakers return to the state Capitol in Sacramento in January, calling for the removal of the “Star-Spangled Banner” as the national anthem. The crux of the problem is the vaunted third verse of “The Star-Spangled Banner,” which alludes to slavery, that absolutely no one sings and few people know exists. (Not to mention that entire verse has been taken wildly out of historical context and doesn't actually promote slavery in any way, so there's also that.)

An Extended Tax Reform Debate Will Subject Us to the Usual Absurdities
John McCain’s confirmation he’d vote against the House tax reform bill as currently proposed means Republicans won’t be able to lower taxes - for some people - nearly as quickly as most of them want to. In all, three Republican senators have indicated their unwillingness to vote for the plan, meaning Republicans would need Democratic votes to get it through. As Democratic support is unlikely, the American public will have to endure several weeks or months of grandstanding, proposed amendments, and further neutering of any real benefit to taxpayers. The worst thing about these rituals is they are always largely a debate over absurdities. Here are just a few of the perennial favorites.

Wanting Something Doesn't Make it a Human Right
Any observer of American politics must be struck by the ever-expanding roster of things people have asserted they have rights to.  But seriously considered, there is little basis beyond widely shared desires or wishes for certain things, which supposedly implies that there should be rights for them. From there, it is but one more step to the legislative or judicial attempt to create such rights, promoted as social improvements provided by government. Few have thought as carefully about this confusion between wishes and rights as Leonard Read, particularly in “When Wishes Become Rights,” in his 1967 Deeper Than You Think.  In a world where turning one wish into a political right leads to still-further transmutations of other wishes, and every such step erodes liberty, Read’s views still deserve serious consideration on the 50th anniversary of their publication. If not for the corrupting lure of something for nothing, people would long ago have rejected the idea that wishes imply rights. But as ever-more goodies have been added to the lure, many Americans seem to have decided that the loot available from invented rights trumps worrying about the burdens to “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” necessarily imposed on others as a result.

Is College Prep Overrated?
The college application season is simply the culmination of a long and arduous competition which begins many years before graduation. We encourage students to invest in all sorts of tutoring, extra-curricular activities, sports, and high-profile internships in hopes that these opportunities will make their college application stand out. At the same time, we discourage them from picking up a low-level job because it might distract from their homework or their quest for the latest scholarship. Are we misguided in such a course?

Suppose They Gave a War and Nobody Came
We have a tendency to glorify war. People are drawn to the warrior, the strong and powerful leader who proclaims his willingness to go toe to toe with the "enemy". And in so doing, we neglect those whose aim was peace. War must be seen as a last resort.

Resolved: The Welfare State Should Be Abolished
That the welfare state is for the purpose of helping the poor is one of the great fictions of our time. There is nothing that the welfare state contributes to our lives that couldn’t be replaced by the normal operations of the market and civil society.

What We've Learned from a Century of Communism
Tuesday was the 100th anniversary of the Bolshevik seizure of power, which led to the establishment of a communist regime in Russia and eventually in many other nations around the world. It is an appropriate time to remember the vast tide of oppression, tyranny, and mass murder that communist regimes unleashed upon the world. While historians and others have documented numerous communist atrocities, much of the public remains unaware of their enormous scale. It is also a good time to consider what lessons we can learn from this horrendous history.

Why the Democratic dream of a construction budget is still in flux despite new majority
The election Tuesday of Manka Dhingra as senator from the 45th Legislative District means Democrats soon will have a one-vote majority in that chamber once she is sworn in. They already control the state House and the Governor’s Office. Trouble is Democrats need 60-percent approval in the Legislature to pass the financial package needed to approve a construction budget, which has languished in political purgatory since summer. Republicans have been holding up approval of the construction budget, which usually passes with strong bipartisan support, over a disagreement concerning rural water policy. Tuesday’s election of Dhingra hasn’t changed the Republican stance. Senate Republican Leader Mark Schoesler, soon to be in the minority, remained steadfastly against a construction budget, known as the capital budget, without an agreement to address a 2016 state Supreme Court ruling known as the Hirst decision. Schoesler predicted fellow Republicans would feel the same.

Bellevue company sued over foreclosures on military homes
Since 2010 a Bellevue company has foreclosed on at least 28 homes owned by military service members without obtaining required court orders, the U.S. Justice Department said. A lawsuit was filed Thursday against Northwest Trustee Services, Inc., in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington. The lawsuit claims the company violated the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act, which protects the rights of service members who are on active duty by suspending or modifying certain civil obligations. The law prohibits foreclosing on the home of a service member during active military service and one year afterward without a court order if the mortgage originated prior to the servicemember's period of active military service.

The Year That Changed History
Sometimes, just a few months can change the course of civilization. That’s what happened in 1942 when a series of decisive events changed the trajectory of World War II. Before that turning point, Germany seemed destined for victory. In 1939 and 1940, Hitler’s army had won a series of border wars, giving the Fuhrer control over ten conquered European countries. By the autumn of 1940, Britain was the sole European power standing against Hitler—and it was being mercilessly bombed by the Luftwaffe. At the same time, Russia was colluding with Germany, and America remained isolationist. Hitler and his allies, who reigned over an area larger than the present European Union, believed that the European wars were over, for all purposes—and decisively won.

The Military Rebuild Needs to Start in 2018
Restoring U.S. military strength needs to start now. The level of funding in 2018 will indicate whether the Trump Administration will succeed in the rebuild. Rebuilding the U.S. military will require sustained investment and increases for the foreseeable future. Merely keeping up with inflation will not suffice. The Trump Administration promised to rebuild the U.S. Armed Forces. This is only achievable through sustained and consistent investments in the defense budget. It took years for U.S. military readiness to erode, thus it will also take years to restore it. The restoration should start with the 2018 funding level. The Budget Control Act will have to change to accommodate the levels of spending required to rebuild the U.S. military.

175 women demand change to culture, sexual harassment policies at the Legislature
More than 170 women who work or have worked at the state Capitol have signed onto a letter urging sweeping change at the Legislature to end inappropriate behavior and misconduct women say they face on the job. The letter, released Monday, comes after a turbulent last week in Olympia where two former lawmakers faced accusations of sexual misconduct, and a host of women at the Capitol said they often experience sexist or inappropriate behavior, ranging from unwanted comments and touching to groping or harassment. The letter is the broadest call yet for reform following a story last week by The News Tribune, The Olympian and Northwest News Network about the atmosphere for women at the Legislature. Organizers say they started circulating the letter on Friday. Australian PM Issues Warning, Announces New Plan to Halt Dual Citizenship Crisis
New rules are to be introduced to make all MPs and senators in Australia register their citizenship status following the scandal that has forced six politicians to quit office - leaving the country's government deadlocked. Current and future MPs and senators will have to lodge declarations and produce evidence that they are not foreign citizens before standing for official office under a new disclosure measure announced by Australian prime minister Malcolm Turnbull on Monday, November 6. The move comes amid a dual citizenship crisis that has already led to six politicians — some of them high-profile — being forced to quit their government roles after being discovered to have links with another foreign country.

US Air Force Didn’t Notify FBI of Texas Church Shooter’s Criminal History
The man believed to have murdered 26 people in a Texas church on Sunday was able to legally purchase the firearm used in the slaughter because the US Air Force mishandled information about his criminal history, the service reported Monday. The US Air Force did not submit the criminal history of gunman Devin Patrick Kelley to the FBI as required by their own regulations. Kelley, who also injured 20 in his attack on the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas, was ousted from the Air Force for domestic violence toward his ex-wife and his stepson in 2012. That information, had it been shared, should have prevented him from buying a firearm.

Why church shootings don’t intimidate the church
Whether they are crazed loners in the United States or jihadist cells in Syria or governing councils in the old Soviet bloc, these forces fundamentally misunderstand the source of Christianity’s strength in the first place. Killers assume, after all, that gunfire or poison gas or mass beheadings will show Christians how powerless we are. That is true. They assume that this sense of powerlessness will rob the community of its will to be the church. That is false. If they looked overhead, in almost any of the churches they attempt to destroy, these killers might see what they miss: the cross. The day of the shooting was, for many churches, a day of remembrance for the persecuted church.
