Philharmonic President Is to Depart, as Music World Changes
The announcement on Monday that Zarin Mehta, 71, will step down as president of the venerable New York Philharmonic comes at a moment when orchestra executives are rethinking the role of the symphony in American society. Mr. Mehta, 71, who also holds the title of executive director, said he would leave after the close of the 2011-12 season, bringing his tenure to 12 years at the helm of one of the world’s leading musical institutions.
