First time lucky
FOR a brief period in the small hours of the morning of September 24th, a control room full of Indian engineers held their breath as Mangalyaan (Hindi for "Mars vehicle") hid behind the planet's dark side. They waited for automatic systems to fire the main engine, which had passed tests earlier in the week, in order to slow the craft enough that it could fall into an orbit around Mars after a 323-day journey. A few tense minutes later, screens in the control room revealed that India had managed to do what no other nation had done before—succeeded in its first attempt to reach Mars safely.

'Skin-like' device monitors cardiovascular and skin health
A new wearable medical device can quickly alert a person if they are having cardiovascular trouble or if it's simply time to put on some skin moisturizer, researchers report. The small device, approximately five centimeters square, can be placed directly on the skin and worn 24/7 for around-the-clock health monitoring. The wireless technology uses thousands of tiny liquid crystals on a flexible substrate to sense heat. When the device turns color, the wearer knows something is awry.

Spokane pot use measurable by THC levels in wastewater, panel told
“Nobody can lie about what’s showing up in the sewage,” said American Civil Liberties Union attorney Alison Holcomb to Spokane City Council’s Marijuana Policy Subcommittee on Tuesday when suggesting that the city test its wastewater to find out how much pot is being used. Spokane wastewater director Dale Arnold said he would check with a lab this week to find out how possible it is to get readings for THC from wastewater. But he suspects it might be difficult. “A large portion of that wastewater doesn’t come out of human beings,” he said.
