The Herd Mind
The State is a state of mind; it is the herd mindset itself. Randolph Bourne famously wrote, “War is the health of the State.” This has long been the byword for anti-war, anti-state libertarians, and rightly so. But Bourne did not mean exactly what most libertarians take this phrase to mean. To understand the maxim’s original meaning, as Bourne used it in his great unfinished essay “The State,” one must understand his distinctions among three concepts that are often conflated: Country, State, and Government.

Mass Exodus From States Run By Top Democratic Governors Continues
The Democratic Governors Association, in an attempt to attack Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner (R) tweeted this week about how 33,000 people left Illinois for another state over the past year, continuing years of outmigration from the Land of Lincoln. With that tweet, the DGA is trying to make the public dumber. The DGA knows full well that Gov. Bruce Rauner doesn’t run his state. That would be House Speaker Mike Madigan (D), who has presided over the decline of a once great state during his 34 years as Speaker. By attempting to pin Illinois’ continued decline on Gov. Rauner, the DGA is either ignorant about how Illinois politics works, or they are lying. Most likely the latter, but either way it’s not good. The DGA really doesn’t want to dive into interstate migration data, as it does not reflect well on their most prominent governors.

Beetles and bats threaten treasures of the medieval parish churches
They have survived the religious purges of the Reformation, the sectarian violence of the English civil wars, even the widespread whitewashing of church walls in the 19th century. But now hundreds of priceless medieval panel paintings in churches across East Anglia – depicting gruesome scenes from hell, biblical figures, English monarchs and angels and apostles – face a new and potentially deadly threat: deathwatch beetles.

Yorkshire town battles to save its historic market from the plans of ‘modernisers’
It is, according to locals, the longest continually running market in Britain. Once a week, for more than seven centuries without pause, the historic North Yorkshire town of Knaresborough has hosted street traders selling all manner of produce in its pretty town square. Along with an impressive castle and a picturesque river, the Wednesday market has become an integral part of the town’s identity. So when local politicians floated plans to tamper with an institution dating back to at least 1310, a furore was inevitable.

'The difficulty is the point': teaching spoon-fed students how to really read
When the logic of capitalism means universities are run as businesses, much is lost. Reclaiming literature is crucial to understanding the times we live in.

Christmas is a time for celebration, for feasting and for relationships. But it is also a time for a mild engagement in iconoclasm, as we peel back the layers of accreted tradition and recover the origins of the Christmas gospel. In that spirit (and Spirit) I offer three Christmas surprises for you to unwrap at your leisure, peruse, and enjoy in between chomping on another turkey sandwich. The shepherds were not poor outcasts; the swaddling of Jesus was not mere motherly care; and the holy family was not abandoned and alone.

BOMBSHELL: Myhre Has A History of Brady Violations
In the recent mistrial of the Bunkerville Standoff case in Las Vegas, Judge Gloria Navarro harshly rebuked Acting US attorney Steven Myhre for his blatant Brady violations and refusal to turn over exculpatory evidence to the defense. Exculpatory evidence is information that is critical to the defense case. It could change the way the attorneys present their cases, change the theory of the case, impact jury selection, and even exonerate the defendants completely.
