A Bernie Sanders-backed candidate just got elected mayor in the deep south
On Tuesday night, Randall Woodfin scored an upset of the two-term Democratic mayor of Birmingham, Alabama, to become the youngest mayor (he's 36) in the Magic City in more than 100 years. Woodfin's campaign became something of a cause celebre among national liberal activists aligned with Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders. Interestingly, Woodfin was a Hillary Clinton supporter during the 2016 campaign, serving as her state director in Alabama.

EU To Battle It Out In Court With Ireland For Failing To Collect Billions From Apple
The European Commission announced Wednesday it will be taking Ireland to court due to the country’s failure to collect roughly 13 billion euros ($15.3 billion USD) from Apple. “We are not the global tax collector for everybody else,” said Irish Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe. “We must be very careful not to endanger our reputation as advocates for free trade.”

Tax Hells, Not Tax Havens, Are the Problem
There are numerous reasons to support tax havens that have nothing to do with money. What have tax hells ever done that's good?

Socialism Shouldn't Be Let Off the Hook for Nightmares Like North Korea
We let socialists off the hook too easily when they dismiss references to real-world examples of socialism as “straw men”. Most of those “straw men” are nothing of the sort. They are the has-been utopias of yesteryear, the models that Western socialists once used to endorse, and now no longer want to be reminded of.

The Rich Are Being Pillaged, and Everyone Suffers
To observe that a tax reform primarily helps the rich is supposed to doom it. It should be the opposite: no tax reform is worth pursuing unless it primarily helps the rich. That’s because the current system mainly hurts the rich. It is wildly unfair, discourages wealth creation, and punishes people for doing everything an economy is supposed to do, which is boost incomes and living standards for as many as possible.

To Embrace Each Other, We Must Embrace Our History
Another tragedy reminds us that 150 years after the end of the civil war, the symbols of history still have the power to change our future. And given the significant, albeit partial, role of a statue of a southern general in the events that played out in Virginia in August, it reminds us that America still has a minority that it has failed to integrate, with fatal consequences.

The True Purpose of Russia's Zapad Military Exercises
The primary target of the Russian military message from Zapad–2017 was Belarus itself. On September 15, just as Zapad began, Russia transferred a loan to Belarus worth $700 million to refinance part of the $1 billion in external debt that Minsk must pay off this year. The loan had been in the pipeline since April, when Putin and Lukashenko last met in St. Petersburg. Its timely disbursal was likely a pointed reminder to Belarus of its financial dependence on Russia.

Lysander Spooner: Freedom Trumps the Rule of Law
Lysander Spooner, writing in 1864, was professing a view that even today is considered to be utterly controversial: It is not only possible to oppose the institution of slavery while supporting secession, it is an absolute contradiction to hold any other combination of positions. In Spooner's view, all the northern supporters of the war accomplished, including Senator Sumner, was to replace chattel slavery with political slavery.

King Salman and Putin Deals Leave the U.S. Out in the Cold
King Salman of Saudi Arabia will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin this week during the first official visit of a Saudi King to Russia. This visit marks a turn in Russia-Saudi relations: the two countries have not seen eye-to-eye on the future of Syria, and the U.S.-aligned Riyadh views Russia's relationship with Iran as an unholy alliance. While their agenda is no doubt filled with pressing political topics, it is the economic deals they will sign that really matter. These deals reflect a broader strategy of engagement in the Middle East: Russia uses economics as a vehicle to deepen political relationships and shore up Moscow's flagging bottom line, all with the added bonus of undercutting the U.S., and the Russian playbook for Saudi Arabia is no different. This engagement also sends a message to the United States. International relations are fluid, and countries that may be unsatisfied with U.S. leadership have choices regarding their economic, political, and military partnerships.

A Statistician Reconsiders Her Support for Gun Control After Looking at the Data
If only politicians were so open to contradiction by reality. With so many people insisting that the Las Vegas massacre confirms what they've always thought about gun control, it is refreshing to hear from someone who changed her mind on the subject after considering the evidence. "My colleagues and I at FiveThirtyEight spent three months analyzing all 33,000 lives ended by guns each year in the United States," Leah Libresco, a statistician who used to work for the data journalism site, writes in The Washington Post. "We looked at what interventions might have saved those people, and the case for the policies I'd lobbied for crumbled when I examined the evidence."
