The Corrupting Power Of The Inner Ring
David Brooks’s column today offers a reflection on How To Think, a forthcoming book by Alan Jacobs that Brooks describes (quite rightly; I’ve read it) as “absolutely splendid.” Brooks says: Jacobs’s emphasis on the relational nature of thinking is essential for understanding why there is so much bad thinking in political life right now. Jacobs makes good use of C. S. Lewis’s concept of the Inner Ring. In every setting — a school, a company or a society — there is an official hierarchy. But there may also be a separate prestige hierarchy, where the cool kids are. They are the Inner Ring.

Migrant smuggling tops EU crime priorities
Preventing the arrival of immigrants with no legal rights to the EU is more important, in terms of EU policy priorities among member states, than fighting terrorism and online child pornography.

Mensa offers to host IQ test for Trump and Tillerson
“I think it's fake news,” Trump told the magazine of Tillerson’s “moron” remark, “but if he did that, I guess we'll have to compare IQ tests. And I can tell you who is going to win." ITK reached out to the geniuses at Mensa — which describes itself as “an international society whose only qualification for membership is a score in the top 2 percent of the general population on a standardized intelligence test” — and asked if they’d be willing to take Trump’s suggestion.

Jimmy Carter offers to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un
Former President Jimmy Carter (D) reportedly offered to meet with North Korea’s Kim Jong Un in an attempt at peace talks. A University of Georgia professor detailed Carter’s offer to Korea JoongAng Daily, a South Korean newspaper. “Carter wants to meet with the North Korean leader and play a constructive role for peace on the Korean Peninsula as he did in 1994,” Park Han-shik told the newspaper.

Why I Am Not Raising My Daughters to be Feminists

A project created by photographers and partners Sham Hinchey and Marzia Messina called “Dear Daughters” was recently featured by HuffPost. But you don’t create strong women by indoctrinating girls, as today’s radical feminism does, to believe that they are victims of a sinister cultural force bent on enslaving them as in The Handmaid’s Tale, a feminist fantasy that has been hyped hysterically as a dire warning about the coming patriarchy in Donald Trump’s America.

Israeli Minister Elkin 'Regrets' Trump's Choice to Delay Moving US Embassy
Trump's recent choice not to move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem for now so as to wait until a peace deal is tried out is regarded by many as a retreat from the solid support for Israel and comes under inevitable criticism from the Israeli side. Israeli Minister of Jerusalem Affairs Ze'ev Elkin expressed Monday his regret over US President Donald Trump's decision to delay moving the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, saying that the president was guided by an "illusion" of the possibility that the peace process could be enhanced with the current Palestinian leadership.

Rock On TC4! Earth Readies Planetary Defense Tests as Asteroid Approaches
Watch out Earthlings - an asteroid that is twice the size of a double-decker bus is poised to fly past the planet in the next 24 hours. It was initially feared that a space rock — dubbed TC4 — would fly past Earth at a distance of just 4,200 miles while traveling at a speed of 30,000 mph. Now NASA believe the asteroid — spanning up to 27 meters — will travel past at the slightly greater distance of around 27,000 miles on Thursday, October 12.

Catalonian Referendum Sparks Separatist Hopes on Finnish Archipelago
The Catalonians' overwhelming "yes" vote for independence from Spain has triggered dreams of sovereignty across Europe. On the Finnish archipelago of Åland, the controversial referendum has evoked hopes of widening the autonomy the islanders currently enjoy, with more ambitious goals to follow. While debates about separatism in Europe usually focus on Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Basque Country, Finland's own secessionist movement has been galvanized by the Catalonian referendum.

Catalonia's Shadow: Why Two Italian Regions Seek Autonomy Referendums
The Italian regions of Veneto and Lombardy are seeking autonomy and expected to hold referendums on October 22. Speaking to Sputnik, Italian expert Michele Ainis specifically emphasized the political importance of the referendums.

Euthanasia, Assisted Suicide 'Just Cheaper' Than Medical Treatment
2,149 patients have been euthanized in Canada in the first year since the legalization of assisted suicide, according to the second Interim Report of Health Canada. Kate Kelly, a public activist who opposes the grim practice, explained why it has become so popular and told the story of how her mother was involuntarily killed by a young doctor. The law, which came into force on June 17, 2016, permits adults whose natural death is reasonably foreseeable to undergo the procedure. However, many fear that doctors could abuse their power and indulge in the involuntary deaths of patients who are not terminally ill. Kate Kelly, editor of a volunteer organization called "Stop Hospital Euthanasia" and a Board Member of the organization "Choice is an illusion," which fights assisted suicide and euthanasia legalization efforts, explained to Sputnik Radio that her conclusion is that assisted suicide and euthanasia are simply cheaper than medical treatment.

Oxford college bans 'harmful' Christian Union from freshers' fair
An Oxford College has banned the Christian Union from its freshers’ fair on the grounds that it would be “alienating” for students of other religions, and constitute a “micro-aggression”. The organiser of Balliol’s fair argued Christianity’s historic use as “an excuse for homophobia and certain forms of neo-colonialism” meant that students might feel “unwelcome” in their new college if the Christian Union had a stall. Freddy Potts, vice-president of Balliol’s Junior Common Room (JCR) committee, said that if a representative from the Christian Union (CU) attended the fair, it could cause "potential harm" to freshers. Puerto Rican Mayors Investigated For Hoarding Supplies For "Constituents Who Voted For Them"
Over the past couple of weeks, President Trump has taken a beating in the mainstream media for, among other things, suggesting that the mayor of San Juan had politicized federal disaster relief efforts in response to Hurricane Maria and that it was, in fact, local mayors and residents who were failing to help the recovery effort and not the federal government.
