Brexit court defeat for UK government
Parliament must vote on whether the UK can start the process of leaving the EU, the High Court has ruled. This means the government cannot trigger Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty - beginning formal exit negotiations with the EU - on its own. Theresa May says the referendum - and existing ministerial powers - mean MPs do not need to vote, but campaigners called this unconstitutional. The government is appealing, with a further hearing expected next month.

GOP call for statewide Pennsylvania poll watchers is denied
In a scathing rebuke, a federal judge on Thursday denied the Pennsylvania Republican Party's effort to allow poll watchers from anywhere in the state monitor precincts on Election Day. Pappert said the state GOP's request was "unreasonably delayed," is not in the public interest and does not meet the standard for a last-minute intervention from the court. Pennsylvania Democratic Party: People that want to poll-watch are, "Just trying to suppress the vote and cause confusion. It's totally ridiculous." But of course they want you to trust that democracy is safe in their strong and capable hands!

Levin: What’s Being Done in This Country Has Been Done Everywhere – ‘It’s Tyranny’
“What’s being done to this country, with this aggressive, centralized statism, has been done everywhere,” stated Mark Levin. “This is just the modern incarnation of it. The bureaucracies, and regulations, and red tape and all the rest. It’s tyranny by bureaucracy, tyranny by judicial oligarchy, tyranny by imperial president. It’s all tyranny – soft tyranny getting increasingly harder.”

Our Poisonous Economic System Needs A Grassroots Intervention
Last month, nearly two hundred nations signed on to a legally-binding global climate deal seeking to phase out the greenhouse gases known as HFCs. And this Friday, the non-binding Paris Agreement will officially enter into force for seventy-six nations, which have made voluntary pledges to keep global temperature rise below 2 degrees Celsius and if possible, below 1.5°C. While national governments are finally admitting there is a problem, they have failed to diagnose the disease accurately. As a result, they are proposing solutions that will be fatal for the patient.

GNOSTIC LONGINGS
Aging unleashes Gnostic longings, and I’m not going to be mistaken for a Gnostic. Complaints about aging contain an implicit affirmation of the body, rooted in the truth that our bodies are us. When our bodies ail, we ail; when they fail, we fail. We touch the world—lovers and enemies, soccer and sunsets, sonnets and sushi—only through eyes and ears and brains and nerves and hands and tongues. We can’t escape the body’s failures.

ARISTOTLE AND THE ELECTIONS
Elections can make you wonder about where you live. It can be frightening to share so little in common with neighbors and fellow-citizens. Especially when they elect people to rule over you. Aristotle envisions a common commitment to the virtuous life as at the heart of political society.”
