People have feared tomatoes for 600 years.
NO OTHER VEGETABLE HAS BEEN as maligned as the tomato (and it is a vegetable, by order of the United States Supreme Court). We call tomatoes killers. We call them rotten. We call them ugly. We call them sad. To find the reason why, you have to go back to the 1500s, when the humble fruit first reached European shores (and it is a fruit, by scientific consensus). Through no fault of its own, the tomato stepped into the middle of a continent-wide witchcraft panic, and a scientific community in tumult.

Salon Journalist Panics Over “Political Crisis”
There is a growing sense of panic on the part of old-time “progressives” that the political system, the policy consensus, and the moral credibility of big government itself are no longer sustainable propositions. The emergence of Trump has become their exhibit A. “How could this have happened?” they ask themselves. What is so fundamentally unstable about the system we’ve created that so many seem willing to try something, anything , else?

The Feds Can't Put Down the Cash Pipe
So long as the feds maintain their international drug war and other policies that contribute to the enormous size of the global black market, the greenback isn’t going anywhere.

The Slippery Slope of Wealth Redistribution
There are practical and moral reasons to fear state-conducted redistribution efforts. Once you start redistributing wealth, there is no principled stopping point other than strict, universal equality.

School Choice with Public Funds Is Government Choice
Several studies have shown that private school choice programs save taxpayers money overall and even financially benefit local school districts. The primary reason for this: on average, private school tuition levels are lower than the state per pupil funding amounts allocated to residentially-assigned public schools. Moreover, these private school choice programs generally fund students that wouldn’t have attended a private school absent the scholarship since funding is targeted to the least-advantaged students. While these types of programs are fiscally beneficial, accepting public funds can have serious unintended long-run consequences for private schools and children. Allocating public funds to private schools increases competitive pressures in the short-run and leads to specialization, but this comes at a price we all must pay in the long-run. Whenever a private institution accepts public funding, that private entity gives up some of its autonomy. The main cost associated with accepting public funds is that the government is able to stipulate how the school operates.

Questions Arise Over Standing Rock Protesters’ Use of Funds
In North Dakota, winter is coming. This has been a reason to push for more funding for the 700-some protesters remaining at the Standing Rock Reservation near Cannon Ball, North Dakota. The group, which first gathered in April to protest the Dakota Access Pipeline, is increasing its calls for aid as the weather gets colder. The calls for supplies come even after the group has received millions of dollars of donations online, as well as donated supplies from a variety of groups.

Cronyism at the Gas Pump
Since 1993, the federal government has levied a gas tax of 18.4 cents per gallon. State governments also set and levy their own gas taxes. All considered, Americans pay an average of 54.21 cents per gallon of gas in taxes.

Federal Meddling in Dairy Farms Hurts Both Consumers and Producers
Federal laws against free association of dairy producers has created a distorted and less-responsive market. When US dairy farmers worked together to reduce herd numbers — in order to limit supply and boost prices — this was apparently seen as a dangerous and deceptive move. Recently, dairy cooperatives (producers who work together and serve as middlemen between the farms and processors of dairy products) settled a class-action lawsuit for $52 million for working to reduce dairy cattle numbers, which would limit the supply of milk products.

Who Will Survive Low Cattle Prices? Those With the Lowest Inputs
The cattle market is in the toilet. The future looks even worse. Calves bring only one-half of what they did a couple years back. Stocker margins are negative, feeders too. The American cattle industry is on its knees, broken and busted. Is this the end? Well maybe, at least for some folks. A better question might be this: who will survive this Armageddon, and how will they do it?

When asked about the leaked emails from Hillary Clinton’s campaign, Sen. Bernie Sanders’ reaction matched that of voters everywhere. The Washington Post asked Sen. Sanders about the Wikileaks (via Putin) emails, and his response summed up the failure of the entire Trump/Wikileaks/Putin get Clinton operation, “Trust me, if they went into our emails — I suppose which may happen, who knows — I’m sure there would be statements that would be less than flattering about, you know, the Clinton staff. That’s what happens in campaigns.”
