German Grand Coalition to Intensify Austerity Policies in Europe
[Global Research] An important political lesson must be drawn from the coalition agreement struck after two months of negotiations between Germany’s conservative parties (the Christian Democratic Union and the Christian Social Union) and the Social Democratic Party: It is impossible for working people to defend their interests within the framework of the existing parties and political system.

South Africa: Killing of 34 Marikana Mine Strikers – The Role of British Company Lonmin
On 16 August 2012 the summertime sun streamed through the leafy canopy of Green Park and into the windows of the Belgravia headquarters of platinum mine company Lonmin plc. But 5,500 miles away there was a chill in the air as the company’s biggest South African mine became a frenzy of activity. Striking workers had gathered for the eighth day in a row at the Marikana mine, while media crews watched from nearby. Four thousand rounds of live ammunition were delivered and ambulances rolled ominously into place. As the cameras flashed, Zukiswa Mbombo, police chief of North West province, announced: “Today is D-day: we are ending this matter.”

Christian Woman Imprisoned in Indonesia for Insulting Hinduism
Ryan Morgan, International Christian Concern’s Regional Manager for Southeast Asia, said, “Ms. Rusgiani’s sentencing is a perfect example of a justice system being used to hypocritically and blatantly discriminate against a member of a minority faith. Last year in other parts of Indonesia Islamic radicals shouted insults and hurled bags of urine, rocks, and dirt into crowds of Christians without any fear of arrest, yet Ms. Rusgiani’s single critical comment is enough to result in a 420 day prison sentence? The double standard being applied here is staggering. This sends a message to the world that Indonesia’s legal system is not about protecting religious plurality, as the government would claim, but defending the petty grievances of whichever faith happens to hold the majority, and therefore the most influence, in any given area. Religious intolerance has been growing at an alarming pace across Indonesia, and targeting minority Christians expressing their opinion is not the solution to curbing this growth.”
‘Betrayed’: Wife of American Pastor Imprisoned in Iran Fears for His Life after Nuke Deal
Among the most troubling aspects of the diplomatic talks that have taken place between the United States, European powers, and Iran is that despite the steps to normalize relations an American citizen remains in prison for exercising what is stated by America to be a fundamental right and a “core objective of U.S. foreign policy.” Securing the release of three Americans who are believed to be detained in Iran should be at the very center of any contact the U.S. has with Iran, until these citizens are home, and while they push Iran to reform its treatment of religious minorities.
