BC, Latin America, and the Monroe Doctrine
How close did British Columbia come to US annexation? Closer than you think. Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro recently accused the United States of plotting a coup against him. Regardless of how accurate or justified that may be, this has led some pundits to openly wonder whether the Monroe Doctrine is about to be dusted off. What is the Monroe Doctrine? During the 19th century, President James Monroe asserted a U. S. protectorate over the entire western hemisphere. This policy declared that any involvement of European nations in North, Central, and South American countries would be viewed as “the manifestation of an unfriendly disposition toward the United States.”

Judaizing” tendencies—like those of the Hebrew Roots Movement—must be rejected. Everyone needs the Gospel, found through the kerygma and sacraments of the Church. In the Church, we find the Messiah, the “paschal lamb” sacrificed for us. The realization of God’s ancient promises is here.

I’d better start with the basics: I’m a politician.
Income inequality in the US celebrated its 50th birthday last year. Having declined steadily after World War II, 1968 began a 50-year winning streak. Few are cheering, though, because concentrations of wealth are dangerous. People controlling huge amounts of money can use their buying power to push us all around. Hence billionaires like Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates, and Warren Buffett are much in the news on the receiving end of public opprobrium.

JEAN ARTHUR AND THE VIRTUE OF KINDNESS
By Sarah McCullough Cornwell: This is the second post in a series in which I explore what classic film actresses in iconic roles can teach us — and, more particularly, my fast-growing daughter — about the seven classic virtues. These posts follow the order of the virtues that Dante encounters in his journey up through Purgatorio.  The first post was on humility and Ingrid Bergman’s character in Casablanca. This post focuses on kindness and what the spirited and witty Jean Arthur can teach us about this virtue. Though she has many memorable roles (I highly recommend You Can’t Take It with You), I will focus on her character in Frank Capra’s Mr. Smith Goes to Washington.

"FOR WHAT IS CALLED FREEDOM": JOHN KEBLE AND THE POLITICAL THEOLOGY OF 30TH JANUARY
In his 1831 sermon on the Anniversary of the Martyrdom of King Charles I, John Keble defended the commemoration against charges that it had "become superfluous and unmeaning" in a society defined by 'freedom' and 'liberty'.  He notes how an empty, contentless concept of liberty disorders society: "Do not men, somehow, think of liberty, as of ...  something the mere pursuing of which, for its own sake, is a part of virtue? ... Though men commit things worthy of death, yet if they be done for freedom’s sake, the world finds pleasure in them that do them."

Virginia Democrats Propose Bill Allowing Abortions Until Birth
Democrats in the Virginia statehouse presented a bill on Monday that would repeal restrictions on abortion, allowing terminations up until the moment of birth. This bill comes on the heels of New York passing a similar law last week, setting a new goal for what pro-abortion Democrats view as a achievable in other states.

Amidst Global Warming Hysteria, NASA Expects Global Cooling
Those promoting CO2 as the reason for global warming are hucksters and those taken in by hucksters. Please consider NASA Sees Climate Cooling Trend Thanks to Low Sun Activity. “We see a cooling trend,” said Martin Mlynczak of NASA’s Langley Research Center. “High above Earth’s surface, near the edge of space, our atmosphere is losing heat energy. If current trends continue, it could soon set a Space Age record for cold.”

Apple blocks Facebook from running its internal iOS apps
Apple has shut down Facebook’s ability to distribute internal iOS apps, from early releases of the Facebook app to basic tools like a lunch menu. A person familiar with the situation tells The Verge that early versions of Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and other pre-release “dogfood” (beta) apps have stopped working, as have other employee apps, like one for transportation. Facebook is treating this as a critical problem internally, we’re told, as the affected apps simply don’t launch on employees’ phones anymore.

40% of Americans only one missed paycheck away from poverty
Millions of middle-class Americans are just one missed paycheck away from poverty, with 4 of 10 considered "liquid-asset poor," or without enough money socked away to cope with even a sudden disruption in income. The findings, from economic advocacy group Prosperity Now, highlight the financial insecurity facing many U.S. households.

Why These Feminists Oppose Pelosi’s Equality Act
Four self-described liberal feminists said Monday that “gender equality” legislation pushed by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi will jeopardize women’s rights and actually promote inequality. “The Equality Act, which sounds all well and good, is an unmitigated disaster for women and girls,” Kara Dansky, a lawyer and board member at the Women’s Liberation Front, said at an event at The Heritage Foundation featuring her and three other feminists. “And the thing is, it is not possible to both enshrine gender identity in civil rights law and protect women and girls as a distinct legal category at the same time,” Dansky said. “It’s just not possible.”

The Ever-Changing Nature of Work
Are the employment trends, from agriculture to manufacturing to services, cause for worry? Far from it! The U.S. President Donald J. Trump has repeatedly lamented the supposed decline of the American manufacturing sector. During his presidential campaign, he asserted that Americans “don’t make anything anymore” and pledged “to restore manufacturing in the United States.” Yet there is no reason to think of manufacturing jobs as the gold standard in employment. The nature of work has been changing for about 250 years and it is likely to continue to evolve – thanks to declining birth rates, and the rise of robotics and artificial intelligence – in the future.
