When two full salaries, including her own as a lead nurse at a major hospital, weren't enough to get through one week in Venezuela, Karen Hurtado decided the time had come to leave her country for an uncertain -- but perhaps better -- future abroad. The thought of leaving first came when eating meat became an increasingly rare luxury, and her full salary wasn't enough to cover her son's transportation to school. Hurtado is one of more than half a million Venezuelans who have made their way to Ecuador through Colombia this year alone -- and one of many who plans to continue onward to Peru or Argentina, according to a recent report from the United Nations. "The exodus of Venezuelans from the country is one of Latin America's largest mass-population movements in history," United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees' spokesman William Spindler said.

Both jazz and classical art forms require not only music literacy, but for the musician to be at the top of their game in technical proficiency, tonal quality and creativity in the case of the jazz idiom. Jazz masters like John Coltrane would practice six to nine hours a day, often cutting his practice only because his inner lower lip would be bleeding from the friction caused by his mouth piece against his gums and teeth. His ability to compose and create new styles and directions for jazz was legendary. With few exceptions such as Wes Montgomery or Chet Baker, if you couldn’t read music, you couldn’t play jazz. In the case of classical music, if you can’t read music you can’t play in an orchestra or symphonic band. Over the last 20 years, musical foundations like reading and composing music are disappearing with the percentage of people that can read music notation proficiently down to 11 percent, according to some surveys.

FDA approves first generic competitor to EpiPen
The Food and Drug Administration approved the first direct generic competitor to the EpiPen on Thursday, setting the stage for cheaper competition that may lower prices. The new generic, which won’t carry the EpiPen name, will be made by Israeli generic manufacturer Teva Pharmaceuticals. It was approved after the FDA issued new guidance for generic copies of products like the EpiPen, which combines a drug with a specialized device to deliver it fast when people have life-threatening allergic reactions. “This approval means patients living with severe allergies who require constant access to lifesaving epinephrine should have a lower-cost option, as well as another approved product to help protect against potential drug shortages," FDA Commissioner Dr. Scott Gottlieb said in a statement. Alternatives to the EpiPen, sold by Mylan, already exist, and Mylan also sells an "authorized' generic copy of the product. It's simply an unbranded version of EpiPen, the FDA said.

Last weekend, Ely Cathedral flew a rainbow Pride flag in order to signal support for the Ely Pride festival taking place (for the first time) over the weekend. As smoke blankets Northwest, National Weather Service says Washington air quality worst in the country
The air quality in Spokane and across the Northwest teetered between unhealthy and moderate most of Wednesday as smoke from local and Canadian wildfires blanketed the region. The National Weather Service’s Seattle branch tweeted early Wednesday afternoon that Washington had the worst air quality in the country, posting a graphic that showed most of the state had air quality levels at either dangerous for sensitive groups or unhealthy for everyone. The Spokane Regional Clean Air Agency predicts that the air will remain unhealthy today due to the hot weather, wildfires and wind, but conditions could improve. In Chelan and Wenatchee, the air quality Wednesday reached hazardous levels, prompting Chelan County officials to distribute masks.

Does 'Unite the Right' have leftist roots?
According to an aggregate of press and online media accounts, the original “Unite the Right” rally was a white supremacist demonstration that occurred in Charlottesville, Virginia, on Aug. 11 and 12, 2017. The organizers had ostensibly mobilized to oppose the removal of a statue of Robert E. Lee from Charlottesville’s Emancipation Park, and by extension, a campaign of the removal of other Confederate monuments throughout the South. Far-left counter-protesters claimed that the rally’s organizers were proponents of fascism and racism.

CHARLOTTESVILLE: MEDIA PROVE TRUMP RIGHT, AGAIN
The media wanted last August’s “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville to be the next “Bridge to Selma,” an iconic civil rights moment honored by the entire country every year. All week, there were excited announcements of the coming anniversary this past Sunday. Assured of fawning media coverage, thousands of leftists descended on Charlottesville and Washington, D.C., to march against nonexistent “Nazis.” But we haven’t heard so much about the anniversary since then. Last year, President Trump blamed “both sides” for the bedlam at the rally to defend Confederate statues – sending the media into a moral panic. Naturally, Trump also denounced white supremacy, for anyone who missed it the first million times he did so. But the part of his remarks that sent a shock wave through the media was this: “You had a group on one side, and you had a group on the other, and they came at each other with clubs – and it was vicious and it was horrible. And it was a horrible thing to watch. … Yes, I think there’s blame on both sides. You look at both sides – I think there’s blame on both sides. And I have no doubt about it, and you don’t have any doubt about it either.”

More Realistic Fuel Economy Rule Would Cut Traffic Fatalities and Lower Gas Prices
The Trump administration has proposed to halt the steady increases in auto fuel economy standards that were part of backroom deals made by the Obama administration with California and automakers in 2009-12. In doing so, the administration has struck a blow for consumer choice that will be good news for drivers planning or hoping to buy a new car in the next decade. That’s because the mileage mandate is one of the main causes of rapidly rising vehicle prices.

Rediscovering a Moral and Economic Case for Free Trade
In our new paper, “Traders of the Lost Ark,” my Competitive Enterprise Institute colleagues and I attempt to articulate a strong moral and economic case for free trade. Those disputes, we believe, have lost sight of what trade is and why we engage in it, and in so doing will lead to the infringement of liberty and great economic harm.

Seeing history in colour makes the past less foreign
“Into the valley of Death/Rode the six hundred”, wrote Alfred, Lord Tennyson, commemorating the ill-fated Charge of the Light Brigade in 1854 at the Battle of Balaclava during the Crimean war. Around 110 men died in the assault, which was seen as so disastrous it led to the resignation of the British government. Roger Fenton took this picture of the local landscape (below) six months after the battle. Yet even at this early date in the history of photography, images were not immune to manipulation. Fenton was accused of dressing the scenery with cannonballs to add to the drama of the scene. Long before the advent of Photoshop, the camera was proving itself a less than reliable witness. “The Colour of Time”, a collaboration between the historian Dan Jones and the artist Marina Amaral, opens with Fenton’s confection. The book presents a panorama of world history from 1850 to 1960 through 200 photographs taken during this period. The pictures, though, are very different from the grainy, monochrome images that readers of the Daily Sketch, the Graphic and countless other newspapers launched to take advantage of the new medium would have seen: they have been rendered into full colour. The results are often startling, even in the cases of familiar images, of which there are a fair few.

Self-determination for countries that had been occupied by Nazi Germany—Poland in particular—was foremost of the common objectives to which President Franklin Roosevelt and Prime Minister Winton Churchill committed on August 14, 1941 after meeting on the British battleship Prince of Wales off Newfoundland. Utopianism: One of the Biggest Obstacles to Progress
What are the biggest obstacles in progressing a free and open society? One of the biggest obstacles is, broadly speaking, utopianism. Progress is neither guaranteed nor irreversible. The institutions and values that helped bring about the progress humanity has achieved are increasingly under attack by extremists on both sides of the political spectrum. Many nationalist populists on the right and self-proclaimed socialists on the left reject the Enlightenment values of reason, science, and open discourse, as well as free enterprise. Modern society based on the rule of law, global exchange, and social tolerance, is an extremely recent phenomenon. It may also be more fragile than it seems. The greatest travesties of the 20th century were carried out in the name of the utopian ideologies of communism and fascism. There is always the danger that new utopian demagogues will emerge.

Soulmate Marriage: An Unrealistic Goal?
The idea that marriage is difficult is underscored by the fact that nearly 40 to 50 percent of all marriages end in divorce. And although divorce rates are supposedly falling, the numbers of divorced couples are far higher than they were 100 or even 60 years ago. Commenting on this phenomenon for NPR, social psychologist Eli Finkel suggests one possible reason for the change is that marriage “used to be… about basic economic survival.” Now, however, it has turned into a quest for self-actualization and self-esteem.

In my five-part series of talks at New Wine on the question of why Jesus came, the final one focussed on a more surprising say of Jesus, which appears to stand in contrast to his purpose of bringing good news and reconciliation, but connects more obviously with his aim of ‘destroying the works of the evil one‘: "Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. Paul Krugman, Supply-Side Economist?
In the wake of speculation by some economists that the Laffer Curve isn't real, Paul Krugman and other left-leaning economists come to the surprise rescue. That’s how the Laffer Curve works. When tax rates change, that alters incentives to engage in productive behavior (i.e., how much income they earn). In other words, to figure out tax revenue, you have to look at taxable income in addition to tax rates.

Thank God for ‘Avocados From Mexico’
Last year, U.S. avocado imports were valued at $2.6 billion. Mexico provided nearly 90 percent of America’s avocados, the equivalent of 1.7 billion pounds. The rest came from Peru, Chile, the Dominican Republic, Colombia, and Jamaica. Now that our domestic supply of avocados has decreased, it is important to have fruitful relations with these countries. Good thing we also have free trade agreements with five of the six avocado-exporting countries, which allows goods such as avocados to flow more easily.

What Putin is Doing Right... and What the West is Not Doing at All
Here is what Putin is doing right and what the West is--not doing wrong--but not doing at all: First, he is providing his people with a transcendent meaning and purpose through an official religion, that of Christianity, while the West thinks it can keep cultural cohesion through meaningless secular liberal abstractions. What Putin knows that Western leaders seem not to appreciate at all is that every culture needs a religion at its heart to function in a stable way. Communism failed for the lack of a real one and the West is failing now because it has abandoned the one it had. And, ironically, the one the West had is the one that Putin has got now: Christianity.

What does the burqa row tell us about religion, culture and being human?
Boris Johnson has once again got into hot water, and once again his comments have provoked furious reactions on both sides—agreeing and disagreeing with him—but I wonder how may actual read what Johnson said? It is worth reading (and worth the trouble of registering on the site) if only to know what it is that people are debating. The central line of his reasoning is that it seems to him paradoxical that in a country like Denmark, which appears to pride itself on a radical understanding of freedom that protects things we in the UK would find distinctly odd, the burqa is banned when that would be unthinkable here.

Escape from New York: Minimum Wage is Killing and Chasing Away Small Businesses
Big government is crushing small business owners around the nation, punishing decades of hard work and job creation. Too few people speak up as the burdens of the regulatory and nanny states slam down upon them, but every now and then I hear from someone in trouble. Most recently, I received a call from New York City businessman Eli Amsel. In 2016, he told a New York State Assembly committee that he was inspired to start his own business thanks to his grandfather—a Holocaust survivor—who impressed upon him the value of freedom and the opportunity to pursue the American dream. “And that's why I had this inspiration, and I made it work, and I'm here 34 years later, after toiling all these years,” he said. Amsel launched his business in 1982 from the basement of his father’s Brooklyn home. Despite the growing economy, Amsel says his business is down by 20 percent because New York’s regulatory environment is crushing him. In particular, during the past several years, the regulatory state has delivered a triple whammy: an insanely high minimum wage hike, bag taxes, and now a possible ban on his key product—plastic bags. Goodbye American dream; hello regulatory nightmare.

While I largely agree with the conclusion he draws—that the Church’s first duty is the proclamation of the Word and administration of the Sacraments—I’m not altogether convinced that churches face an either/or choice. That is to say, I’m not sure the responsibilities associated with Word and Sacrament need be juxtaposed against active engagement with the challenges of contemporary life. In particular, I submit that the preaching of the Word and the celebration of the Sacraments are both “political” acts in a far older sense than we typically appreciate—and yet, perhaps paradoxically, they warn us against “over-politicizing” our commitments of faith.

No, 'Medicare for All' Is Still Not Plausible
Single-payer advocates are crowing that their plan would save money. They're also wrong. Sen. Sanders’ bill provides universal coverage with full benefits that also include dental, vision, and hearing care, with no direct costs whatsoever for patients. This would be so expensive that even an impossible 40 percent cut in provider payment rates would be needed to roughly break even (projected national health spending would fall by just 3 percent). That is an argument against—not for—single-payer.

How IRS Taxes Kill Plaintiff's $289M Monsanto Weedkiller Verdict
The news that jurors gave $289 million to a man they say got cancer from Monsanto's Roundup weedkiller might make you think the plaintiff will get rich. Dewayne Johnson can't count on the money, as Monsanto says it will appeal. Monsanto faces hundreds of other claims, and may fight hard. But even if Monsanto forks over the money, new tax rules will be as effective as Roundup in swallowing up most of Mr. Johnson's big verdict. Under President Trump's tax bill passed in late 2017, there is a new tax on litigation settlements: no deduction for legal fees. Amazingly, many legal fees simply can't be deducted. That means Mr. Johnson must pay tax even on monies his attorney collects. That is so even though the attorney must also pay tax on the same money.

That was the year that the CIA, which was called into existence in 1947 when the U.S. government was being converted to a national-security state, targeted Iran with its first regime-change operation.
