Claim that 99% of Species Are Saved by ESA Not Supported by Data
An urgent fundraising appeal from The Nature Conservancy’s (TNC) “Global Policy Lead[er]” warns of congressional and administration efforts to change—and from the perspective of many—improve implementation of the Endangered Species Act (ESA). As a recent Competitive Enterprise Institute analysis demonstrates, the overall costs of the federal ESA program are easily in the tens and more likely hundreds of billions of dollars, begging the question, are we getting what we pay for? Campaigners for the current law like TNC skip over such information and make nice-sounding claims like: “the Endangered Species Act is one of our nation’s most effective environmental laws. 99% of the species it's protected have been saved from extinction!” Those who oppose any ESA improvements repeat this claim relentlessly. After nearly a half century it is reasonable to ask if the ESA is effective at recovering species and if the 99% claim-well-founded. Unfortunately, the answer to both is no.

How Malta targeted me for defending rule of law
After the assassination of investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia last year, I have been at the forefront in calling for justice and the restoration of the rule of law in Malta. I do this because Caruana Galizia would not have been killed if Malta's institutions were functioning as they should and no journalists will be safe until they do.

The Moral Problem With Most Gun Free Zones
By taking away our means of self-defense and refusing to provide a suitable substitute, gun-free zones violate our right to life.

Modified Mosquitoes Can Save Lives, Yet Face Opposition
In 1955, the World Health Organization (WHO) launched its Global Malaria Eradication Program. DDT’s public health applications were discovered by the Allied forces during World War II, and the United States was the primary backer of efforts to rid the globe of an ancient disease. DDT gave public health officers a highly effective new tool to stop mosquitoes from spreading the malaria parasite. Between 1955 and 1969, malaria control efforts around the globe freed almost one billion people from this deadly threat, saving countless millions of lives. Yet the program ground to a halt for several reasons, principally highly effective campaigns by environmentalists against the use of man-made chemicals. Rachel Carson, whose book “Silent Spring” is credited with launching the modern environmentalist movement, took aim at DDT, although her concerns were mostly the widespread aerial spraying of insecticides in agriculture. Such spraying had the potential to affect beneficial insects, wildlife, and humans, and it was far from unreasonable to express such concerns, even if her claims of harm were wildly exaggerated and in some cases entirely false.

Some Historical Perspective for Anxious Parents
As every parent knows, infancy and childhood can be fraught with peril. From Sudden Infant Death Syndrome to suffocation, the list of dangers to infants is extensive. But the risks today pale in comparison to those that children faced in the past.

Why We Can't Ignore the "Militia" Clause of the Second Amendment
While many defenders of private gun ownership recognize that the Second Amendment was written to provide some sort of counterbalance against the coercive power of the state, this argument is often left far too vague to reflect an accurate view of this historical context surrounding the Amendment.

Can we preach so people want to listen?
What do people in your congregation feel like just as the service reaches the time for the sermon? Do they have a sense of anticipation and expectation? Is it something that they are looking forward to? This is quite a personal question for preachers, and so something of a challenge, since there is much truth to Phillips Brooks’ saying that ‘preaching is the communication of truth through personality’ (even if you might want to ask some questions of that saying). In churches of different traditions, there might be a range of answers to that. But in churches where preaching is highly valued, the answer to this question very often takes the form of answering another question: should I be looking forward to the sermon? I know it will do me good; I am pretty confident that I will learn something; I certainly ought to be looking forward to it. But do I want to listen?

InfoWars Alex Jones Talks Brexit, Freedom of Speech in US, Political Correctness
Sputnik spoke to Infowars host Alex Jones to get his view on the situation around his ban from social media platforms and his take on Brexit. The American Civil Liberties Union has slammed critics of Infowars host Alex Jones, who consistently call for his banning from social media platforms such as twitter. Jones was recently banned for seven days by the platform. They see it as a dangerous precedent and direct threat to free speech in the country. The union recommends less retrograde steps such as removing individual posts that they see as a violation of its terms of service or to deprioritise their placement on social media newsfeeds.

Trump: Mueller Probe a 'Witch Hunt,' Manafort Verdict 'A Very Sad Thing'
After landing in West Virginia for a rally on Tuesday, US President Donald Trump reflected on Tuesday afternoon's guilty verdicts in the case of his former campaign manager Paul Manafort, saying he was sorry for the longtime Washington insider and noting that the trial had nothing to do with Russian collusion. POTUS remarked that even though the case didn't involve him, he felt badly for Manafort. "I feel very sad about that. It doesn't involve me, but… it's a very sad thing that happened. It has nothing to do with Russian collusion." He called the probe by special counsel Robert Mueller, which turned up Manafort's financial crimes, a "witch hunt" and a "disgrace."

Oregon Gov. Kate Brown fights for political life as voters tire of 'resistance'
Democratic incumbent tied with Republican Knute Buehler in deep-blue state. Oregon Gov. Kate Brown positioned herself early on as a leader of the anti-Trump opposition, but the state’s never-ending panoply of protest activity has backfired on her re-election bid with voters suffering from resistance fatigue. Ms. Brown, who was expected to coast to victory in deep-blue Oregon, has found herself deadlocked in the latest polls with state Rep. Knute Buehler, an affable orthopedic surgeon whose moderate brand of Republicanism is attracting crossover voters.
