Mahathir draws new line in the South China Sea
Malaysian leader opposes China's militarization of the maritime area's disputes but any shift to the US will be cloaked in his trademark non-aligned policy. One of Mahathir’s senior advisors told Asia Times that the Malaysian Prime Minister realizes that today’s China is far more assertive, if not hegemonic especially in South China Sea.

US suspends $300 million in military aid to Pakistan
Move aims to ratchet up pressure on Imran Khan's government to rein in militants said to be active on Pakistani soil. The US military plans to suspend US$300 million in aid to Pakistan after failure to take decisive action against militants that target US forces stationed in Afghanistan.

Is China fueling the developing world’s environmental crisis?

Brazil Museum Fire Threatens Hundreds of Years of History
A fire engulfed the National Museum of Brazil on Sunday night, ravaging the stately, 200-year-old museum in Rio de Janeiro and threatening the years of history encapsulated inside. The destruction to the building was significant, and it is unclear whether any historical artifacts had been saved. The museum housed a collection of more than 20 million items, including Egyptian mummies, Greco-Roman artifacts, dinosaur fossils and the oldest human fossil in the region, known as Luzia.

The searing photos that helped end child labor in America
He arrived at the coal mines, textile mills and industrial factories dressed in a three-piece suit. He wooed those in charge, asking to be let in. He was just a humble Bible salesman, he claimed, who wanted to spread the good word to the laborers inside. What Lewis Hine actually wanted was to take photos of those laborers — and show the world what it looked like when children were put to work.
