Ban on Texting While Driving? No
Should there be a nationwide ban on texting while driving? To many, the obvious answer is a resounding yes. After all, texting while driving, along with other distractions, increases crash risk. However, scratch the surface and the issue becomes more complex. That is why many safety advocates conclude government bans will not do much to improve highway safety, especially compared to other remedies.

SOURCES: CHINA HACKED HILLARY CLINTON’S PRIVATE EMAIL SERVER
A Chinese-owned company penetrated former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s private server, according to sources briefed on the matter. The company inserted code that forwarded copies of Clinton’s emails to the Chinese company in real time. The Intelligence Community Inspector General warned of the problem, but the FBI subsequently failed to act, Texas Republican Rep. Louie Gohmert said during a July hearing.

Painted Like Van Gogh's Starry Night to Soothe Autistic Son
The mural violated no law, and there is no HOA to object to it, yet the city still fined the couple for their color scheme.

Don't Muddy the Waters on Falling Global Poverty
Whatever line you set, the direction of travel is clear: the proportion of the global population in poverty is falling significantly. World Bank data show the number and proportion of people in dire poverty worldwide has plummeted over the past two decades. In 1990, 35.5pc of the world’s population (1.9bn people) lived below the equivalent of $1.90 (£1.47) per day. By 2013, this had fallen to 10.9pc, or just 782m. That’s the most rapid fall in poverty in global history. Viewed from our lofty opulence, it’s easy to downplay this statistic as indicative of a different poverty – that of ambition. Yet viewed in isolation it is surely good news. Unless, of course, you are a left-wing academic keen to decry the effects of globalisation and capitalism. Numerous commentators and intellectuals with precisely these ambitions are trying to muddy the waters and confuse the public on this unadulterated positive development.

Why Every Sane Society Encourages Marriage, Not Divorce
G. K. Chesterton’s defense of the family might have included a defense of divorce. Except that it didn’t. He might have made the case that marriage is such an important institution for society that government should make it somewhat easier for victims of such marital troubles as violence or abandonment or adultery or childlessness to leave damaged, or even less than ideal, marriages. Except that he didn’t.

Atlas Mugged: Elizabeth Warren's Plan to Nationalize Corporations
Ayn Rand’s novel Atlas Shrugged depicts a world where freedom and free markets are crushed by not-so-well-meaning politicians and bureaucrats. The story is a blueprint for the creation of a command economy where prices, wages, and production are dictated by bureaucratic apparatchiks. Like all regimes seeking autocratic power, the outcome, as she chillingly reveals, is cronyism, corruption, economic depression, and the rise of dictatorship. Unfortunately, the book has become disturbingly prophetic. Enter Senator Elizabeth Warren and her proposed Accountable Capitalism Act . It is straight out of Atlas Shrugged. She proposes to regulate corporations with gross revenues of $1 billion or more, requiring them to obtain a federal corporate charter as a “United States corporation”. They would be regulated by a bureaucracy under the Office of United States Corporations.

Bankruptcy: Turkey Now, America Later?
President Trump recently imposed sanctions on Turkey to protest the Turkish government’s detention of an American pastor. Turkey has responded by increasing tariffs on US exports. The trade war is being blamed for the collapse of Turkey’s currency, the lira. While the sanctions may have played a role, Turkey’s currency crisis is rooted in the Turkish government’s fiscal and (especially) monetary policies.
