The Reformation, Viewed from the East
An Eastern Orthodox theologian assesses Luther’s famous doctrine of ‘sola fide.’
Make no mistake: The absence of the Orthodox Church in the Reformation debates of the 16th century is one of the great tragedies of Christian history. What might have happened if Orthodox churches had been party to the theological controversies that dominated 16th-century Europe? The 500th anniversary of the Reformation provides an occasion for assessing Eastern Orthodox and Protestant attempts at unity on the key Reformation doctrine of justification by faith alone (sola fide). Is a consensus possible between the Reformers and the Orthodox Church on this central tenet, which Luther described as “the article by which the church stands or falls?” As an Orthodox theologian, I think the answer is yes, but only if Christ, not justification, is the core of the Christian gospel.

Acting CFPB Director Mulvaney's Bipartisan FinTech Work
The Monday after Thanksgiving weekend, employees of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau awoke to dueling acting directors: Leandra English and Mick Mulvaney. English was designated deputy director by Obama-appointed outgoing director Richard Cordray on Friday, the same day he announced his resignation. Cordray, whom I and others had been calling on President Trump to oust, had previously said he would resign by the end of this month. Cordray and his supporters seemed to think Dodd-Frank allowed him to name a successor, and that the deputy director would become acting director until a new nominee was confirmed by the Senate. The Trump administration disagreed and appointed Office of Management and Budget Director Mick Mulvaney as acting director pursuant to the Federal Vacancies Act. The CFPB’s general counsel agreed with the Trump administration’s reading of the law, and so did authors at conservative publications often critical of Trump, and even some liberals.

State Governments Want to Tax Your Cyber Monday Deals
Adobe Analytics expects online shoppers to spend $6.6 billion today, Cyber Monday, up 16% from last year. It’s also predicted to be the first year that purchases made from smart phones and tablets surpass those made from desktop computers. With all this growth in how and how much consumers spend online, it’s worth checking in on the state of affairs for how those purchases are taxed. The law of the land remains a 1992 U.S. Supreme Court case, Quill v. North Dakota. It says that sales tax can only be applied to purchases when the seller has a physical presence (like a store or warehouse) in the buyer’s state. This isn’t an arbitrary tax loophole, but a practical application of the principle of “no taxation without representation.” The seller, by remitting the tax and being subject to audit, is the legal taxpayer for sales taxes. And so it follows that remote sellers should not be obligated to remit tax funds to another state where they have no political voice.
