President Trump Should Defend Federal Land Use and End Abuse of Antiquities Act
If news reports are accurate, the review of National Monument designations submitted by Interior Secretary Zinke does not begin to fulfill the charge given him by President Trump on April 26th. The recommendations to somewhat shrink two of the most outlandish designations in Utah—Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante—are at most a first step toward undoing the multiple abuses of the Antiquities Act of 1906 committed by Presidents Obama, Bush, and Clinton.

Moore Accuser Caught Lying When News Surfaces That He Threw Her Brother in Jail
Over the past several days, news outlets have been reporting unsubstantiated claims that a former police officer was told to protect cheerleaders from Moore. The woman behind that accusation, Faye Gary, has also openly declared that Moore is a bigot and a racist… but it turns out that she was repeating her own “feelings” and opinions, not facts. Even more shockingly, the mainstream media completely glossed over the fact that Moore was the prosecutor who sent Faye Gary’s criminal brother to prison 35 years ago.

POLITICS AFTER LIBERALISM
Among the ideas that compete to determine the world’s future, one can count Catholicism, Islam, and (until recently) Marxism. But only one is dominant, hegemonic, and all-pervasive—liberalism. Even though its ascendancy is relatively recent, we regard its precepts as if they were Platonic archetypes, both self-evident and manifestly good. Even those who do not consider themselves liberals unthinkingly repeat liberal platitudes. Any attempt not to be liberal seems to descend into something more primitive and dangerous, thereby confirming in the eyes of many the rightness and righteousness of liberal belief. These thoughts came to me while reading the reviews of The Politics of Virtue: Post-Liberalism and the Human Futureby John Milbank and Adrian Pabst.

CULTURE IS DOWNSTREAM OF POLITICS
Social conservatives need a political strategy that will take our case to ambivalent Democrats and independents. Walk into any room full of Christian conservative donors, and someone will say, “Politics is downstream of culture.” Every head in the room will nod. Nothing is more entrenched as conventional wisdom among Christian conservatives. Like most truisms, this one is only partly true. As people change their beliefs about what is true and good, politics changes as well. But putting culture above politics as a distinct sphere is profoundly mistaken, for politics is part of culture.

Some Say Facebook and Amazon Should Be Broken Up. Here’s Why That Thinking Is Wrong.
In recent months, the left has raised sharp cries against the dangers of tech companies’ rapid growth and allegedly ironclad hold of their respective market spaces. Vigorous marketplace competition is highly effective. New legislative proposals that would punish successful private firms merely because of their size would retard the risk-taking and related innovation.

The Problematic Assumption Underlying 2 Estimates Showing Weak Growth From GOP Tax Reform
There’s a key reason two estimates of the economic effects of the GOP tax bill show only small effects: they’re largely ignoring the primary mechanism that will lead to economic growth – the inflow of investment to the United States from other countries. The world has a global capital market where savings will move to find the best return. The Council of Economic Advisers, which advise the president, believe that GDP could increase between 3 and 5 percent. Tax reform would raise the return on investment in the United States relative to the returns in other countries. Economic studiesshow that the U.S. economy continues to be more open every year.

If a Christian Baker’s Rights Are Violated, We All Lose. Here’s Why.
By protecting freedom of religion, speech, and association for people like Phillips, everyone wins. Safeguarding these freedoms will enable religion to flourish, and religious people and organizations to continue offering public goods for everyone’s benefit.

Why This Case Is Critical to the Future of Religious Freedom and Freedom of Speech
Americans must be allowed to think with their minds, speak with their mouths, and work with their hands according to their religious beliefs. Colorado has violated Jack Phillips' First Amendment freedoms of speech and religion, by compelling him to design custom cakes for same-sex weddings. The Supreme Court should protect the First Amendment freedoms of Americans who believe in traditional marriage, which takes nothing away from anyone.

Can Meghan Markle marry into monarchy?
Everyone is delighted at the news of another royal engagement—and with the anticipation of a royal baby in the new year as well, it is bound to lift our spirits. Most people feel that, amidst the gloom of Brexit and the slow economy, we will have something to celebrate. Most—but not all. Melanie McDonagh in The Spectator points out that Markle is an unusual royal bride in being previously married and divorced: "Prince Harry is fifth in line to the throne so constitutionally it doesn’t matter a hoot who he marries because neither he nor his children are going to become monarch, but, for what it’s worth, Meghan Markle is unsuitable as his wife for the same reason that Wallis Simpson was unsuitable: she’s divorced and Harry’s grandmother is supreme governor of the CofE. The last person who made any personal sacrifice for that particular principle was Princess Margaret, and you could argue it didn’t end terribly well."

A Short Picture History of Gas Stations
Drive-in gas stations weren’t just about fuel: They helped create American driving culture. The first drive-in service station opened in Pennsylvania on this day in 1913. American motorists had been able to pump their own gas at filling stations since 1905, but those were little more than a pump at the curbside. Before that, motorists bought gasoline in cans from places like pharmacies and blacksmith shops and filled up themselves. With the opening of this service station at the corner of Baum Boulevard and St. Clair Street in Pittsburgh, a cultural institution was born.

State 1B football: Maguire Isaak piles up record numbers in Almira/Coulee-Hartline’s title win
Maguire Isaak was responsible for so many points Friday afternoon at the Tacoma Dome, he doesn’t have a favorite play. “I don’t remember, honestly,” the junior Almira/Coulee-Hartline quarterback said after a record-setting performance while leading his Warriors to the State 1B football title over Sunnyside Christian with an 84-60 decision that wasn’t as close as it appeared. Isaak accounted for 80 of those points, including eight passing touchdowns and four rushing scores. That’s a state 8-man football championship game record, as were the 84 points ACH scored, the teams’ combined 144 points and Isaak’s 611 yards of total offense.

Former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn pleaded guilty on Friday to the charge of giving false statements to the FBI about communications he had with Russia. Flynn is the latest to come under fire as part of special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigations into alleged Russian interference of the 2016 election, and has agreed to full cooperation with investigators. Yet, Fox News contributor Katie Pavlich highlighted a small detail concerning Flynn’s plea and the accusation that Trump had connections with Russia that resulted in his political gain. “The closest we get to Russia with the Flynn information that we have is that he had conversations with the Russian ambassador, but that would be a normal thing for any incoming White House National Security Advisor to do.”
