Endorsement: Hillary Clinton is the only choice to move America ahead
Since The Arizona Republic began publication in 1890, we have never endorsed a Democrat over a Republican for president. Never. This reflects a deep philosophical appreciation for conservative ideals and Republican principles. This year is different. The 2016 Republican candidate is not conservative and he is not qualified. That’s why, for the first time in our history, The Arizona Republic will support a Democrat for president.

Beware of Corporate Do-Gooders
The profit-driven entrepreneur is dedicated to voluntary exchange and service. The moral busybody is dedicated to control "for your own good." I trust the businessman only when he’s out to make money – because then he’s going to want to do things my way. When he’s out to do me good, he is going to do it his way.

The state's power ultimately derives from its monopoly on the final adjudication of disputes. Unsurprisingly, the state goes to great lengths to preserve this monopoly. Fully binding arbitration would nullify a vast swath of regulation. Every government effort to shift the terms of trade would be in grave danger.

“Property should be ... as a general rule, private; for when everyone has a distinct interest, men will not complain of one another and they will make progress, because everyone will be attending to his own business ...”

Although initially painful, removing government assistance completely, freed farmers to produce what people really wanted, and to do so in an efficient way that could turn a profit. Farmers underestimate just how good they are and how successful they can be without government support.

In terms of economic essentials, the benefits of international trade are no different from the trade that doesn't involve borders. When is increasing productivity not a good thing? When it doesn't fit a narrative.

Clinton's latest proposal is to make child care more affordable for working parents and also to raise the wages of child-care workers. The bottom line is that we’re in a very deep hole and Hillary Clinton, simply for reasons of personal ambition, wants to dig the hole deeper.

Despite a rancorous campaign season, there is at least one belief that Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton share: Americans have far too much liberty when it comes to firearms and due process.

Government Favoritism of Steel Producers Hurts Americans

It’s Rude to Put Your Feet on Subway Seat, But It Shouldn’t Be a Crime
Arresting someone (rather than issuing that person a warning or a citation) for conduct as inconsequential as putting a foot up on the subway imposes real consequences on the real people who are harmed by policy-makers who fail to consider the gravity of their actions.

Rising Prosperity Means Eating More Meat and Seafood
One of the interesting side effects of rising prosperity around the world has been the change in eating habits in formerly poor countries. In China, for example, people historically relied on cereals, such as rice, for nutrition. Following economic liberalization and increased living standards—Chinese income per capita adjusted for inflation and purchasing power parity rose by an astonishing 1,300 percent between 1978 and 2015—consumption of cereals decreased. Conversely, consumption of animal products skyrocketed. Consumption of fish and seafood, specifically, has been rising meteorically since the early 1980s. Today, a typical Chinese consumes more seafood than a typical American. And that, of course, has led to many an article about the imminent depletion of global fish stocks and subsequent environmental catastrophe. But people who worry about the new and more expensive eating habits of people in formerly poor countries need not worry too much. Human ingenuity and free markets have a way of satisfying demand in affordable and environmentally sustainable ways.
