In brief: From Wire Reports:
Israeli aircraft hit targets in Gaza
JERUSALEM – Israel’s military said its aircraft struck targets in the Gaza Strip after rockets from the territory were launched at Israel.
The military said it hit two weapons storage facilities and a rocket launch site early today. No injuries were reported.
Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said six rockets were fired at Israel overnight, causing no damage or injuries. The military said two rockets were intercepted by the missile defense system known as “Iron Dome.” The other four landed in open areas.
Bombings kill 20 throughout Syria
DAMASCUS, Syria – Suicide bombers targeted security compounds in Damascus and a car bomb exploded in a pro-regime district there Sunday, killing at least eight people, the latest in a surge of civil war violence in the capital.
In northern Syria, a car bomb killed 12 soldiers in Aleppo, according to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which relies on a network of activists in Syria for information. It had no other details, and the government did not comment.
In neighboring Lebanon, meanwhile, fierce clashes erupted between the Lebanese military and supporters of a hard-line Sunni Muslim cleric, in the latest spillover from Syria. Six Lebanese soldiers were killed, according to the army, which vowed to hit back with an “iron hand.”
The fighting broke out in Sidon after supporters of Sheikh Ahmad al-Assir, a virulent critic of the powerful Shiite militant Hezbollah group, opened fire on an army checkpoint.
Man kills brother near Colville and flees, sheriff’s office says
A man shot his brother to death just outside Colville on Sunday morning, according to a Stevens County Sheriff’s Office news release.
Eric Harris, 48, allegedly shot his brother Larch Harris, 43, after the two got into a fight, according to the release. There were several witnesses to the homicide, Stevens County Sheriff Kendle Allen said.
Stevens County sheriff’s deputies responded to the call at the suspect’s home on the 400 block of Haller Creek Road about 10:45 a.m., according to the release. By the time they arrived, Eric Harris had fled the scene. He is considered armed and dangerous.
The suspect has an extensive criminal record in Stevens County, Allen said. “He’s no stranger to law enforcement,” Allen said. “He’s known by most of the deputies who work this area.”
Eric Harris is 5-foot-5 and 170 pounds. He has brown hair, hazel eyes and several tattoos. Anyone with information about his location is asked to call 911 or the Stevens County sheriff’s dispatch at (509) 684-5296.
