Free speech exists, but its consequences must be recognized
Speech in India is governed by an amalgamation of legal mandate, social norms, and often-florid rhetoric largely propounded by those who are privileged and those who echo the privileged. It is they who almost exclusively determine when the law is invoked and how social norms should be shaped, whether through their socio-economic ability to approach courts or through the clout they wield within patriarchal social structures. India’s constitution guarantees the right of free speech, and it is possible to argue that the right accrues not just to Indian citizens but to all human beings. That said, although freedom of speech is recognized as a fundamental and inalienable right, even within the constitution it is recognized along with other rights such as those to life, liberty, and religious freedom, over which it cannot claim primacy.

Since he published his bestselling book, Enlightenment Now: The Case for Reason, Science, Humanism, and Progress, Steven Pinker has been criticized for excessive optimism. Jeremy Lent, for example, argues that Pinker is insufficiently concerned about depletion of the planet’s natural resources, including freshwater reserves. He faults the Harvard University psychologist for embracing a “neoliberal, technocratic belief that a combination of market-based solutions and technological fixes will magically resolve all ecological problems.” As Israel’s desalination efforts show, however, technological fixes and market-based solutions are an important part of humanity’s efforts to overcome environmental challenges.

Trump Supporters Are “uneducated, lazy POS…f***ing idiots”, Says FBI
The FBI’s top officials think Trump supporters are “lazy POS, retarded, uneducated, “f***ing idiots” but let us not dare their excellence in all matters. Until earlier this year, a Mueller team attorney continued to work on the Russia probe although he was a member of the RESISTANCE. He worked on the Hillary email investigation and was FBI lead attorney into the Russia probe. He goes unnamed but was transferred out this year. Glover Field, which honored Spokane’s third mayor, renamed Redband Park
For more than a century, a patch of grass in Peaceful Valley carried the name of one of Spokane’s founding fathers. Now it has a new title, taken from an even more ancient resident. The Spokane Park Board voted unanimously Thursday afternoon to name the green spaces along the banks of Spokane River “Redband Park,” a tribute to the native species of trout that spawn in the area. The decision includes the area previously known as Glover Field, named in 1917 for the pioneering Spokane businessman James Glover, who served as mayor and helped plot the early town. Glover, however, also has also sparked controversy in recent years for the treatment of his first wife.

There are so many storylines in the Justice Department’s highly anticipated inspector general report that’s it’s going to take a long time to sift through them all. Why the Intellectual Dark Web Had to Go Dark
In a culture that values emotional security over truth, its pursuit has been driven underground. Recently, The New York Times ran an exposé on the “Intellectual Dark Web.” The piece profiles all the heavy hitters of the movement: Jordan B. Peterson, Bret Weinstein, Joe Rogan, Dave Rubin, and Sam Harris. The author, Bari Weiss, describes in detail how each thinker was alienated from their professional community before building a new network and audience on the internet. The piece characterizes the Intellectual Dark Web as a shadowy underground of renegade iconoclasts who dare to challenge the orthodoxies of academia and the media. While this characterization is not far off, the article glosses over the reason why these thinkers have been ostracized. The political climate is not hospitable to truth-seekers. The only reason the Intellectual Dark Web is “dark” is because it is controversial to be an open inquirer.

Russia as It Is
A Grand Strategy for Confronting Putin
Washington must accept that Putin is here to stay and won’t end his assault on Western democracy and multilateral institutions anytime soon. To deal with the threat, the United States desperately needs a new bipartisan grand strategy. It must find ways to contain the Kremlin’s economic, military, and political influence and to strengthen democratic allies, and it must work with the Kremlin when doing so is truly necessary and freeze it out when it is not. But above all, Washington must be patient. As long as Putin remains in power, changing Russia will be close to impossible. The best Washington can hope for in most cases is to successfully restrain Moscow’s actions abroad while waiting for Russia to change from within.

The director of the American Civil Liberties Union has now acknowledged what should have been obvious to everybody over the past several years: that the ACLU is no longer a neutral defender of everyone's civil liberties; it has morphed into a hyper-partisan, hard-left political advocacy group. How was the world misled by Aung San Suu Kyi? The question has often been asked since Burma’s de facto leader offered her feeble response to the Burmese military’s ethnic cleansing of the Rohingya Muslims from Rakhine State. Part of the answer is that people wanted to believe. Suu Kyi’s background and convictions were always more complex than the popular image of a selfless freedom fighter. From Ancient Declinism to Modern Progress
Today, progress has been so consistent that it can seem inevitable. Whether it's new pharmaceuticals, better iPhones or cheaper holidays, people expect things to get better. But that was not always the case. In the past, people usually expected things to get worse. Writings of the Ancient and Medieval periods are filled with self-deprecation. While some writers praised their own era, such optimists were rare and outnumbered by swathes of pessimists. Pessimism, then, seemed to have been the norm for much of written history. In that respect, modern people are exceptional. We demand and expect progress. We conceive of our own future without declinism, the need for a dictator to halt that decline, or an eventual apocalypse that will wipe away our wretchedness. That’s progress.

Liberal media is aghast at the president's rough handling of Canadian boy-band frontman Justin Trudeau, and his confrontational approach overall at the Group of Seven summit. It's not in the bag, but it is within sight. North Korea and Iran are decisive issues: Will America and its allies be subject to blackmail by rogue nuclear states? There is a grand compromise that might work in the case of North Korea, and the president reportedly has already put it on the table: Formal diplomatic recognition of the Pyongyang regime in return for full de-nuclearization. White House economists – and US voters – worry about tariffs
In news that should surprise no one, it was reported on Thursday that the Trump administration’s own economists have found that a decision to impose unilateral tariffs on imports to the US will be bad for the economy. The findings are in line with the unanimous consensus among respected economists that such trade policy will have adverse effects on economic growth. And, as it happens, the economy is the issue on which US President Donald Trump maintains strongest support among voters. Several polls released in the last several days confirmed that the majority of Americans are not sold on the tariff policy, with most saying they were uncomfortable supporting a congressional candidate who was behind the tough trade action.

Bypassing summer jobs, fewer teens flip burgers
As school days wane, fewer U.S. teens are seeking traditional summer jobs in retail and kids programs, or even scooping ice cream and lifeguarding. In July 2016, the U.S. labor force participation rate for ages 16-19 was 43.2 percent, down steeply from a high of nearly 72 percent in July 1978, a Bureau of Labor Statistics report said. It projects a steeper drop by 2024, with 26 percent of teens expected to be holding summer jobs.

Democrats in US Congress Blast Trump Over Call for Russia to Rejoin G8
President Donald Trump’s call for Russia to be re-admitted to the G8 drew an immediate rebuke from prominent Democratic members of the US Congress, with one member claiming that a key G7 priority is to prevent nations from meddling in each other’s elections, according to Twitter statements.

UK Needs Trump
I am loving this row between Donald Trump and Theresa May. Donald thinks May is too politically correct and that her tone reminds him of a school mistress. Theresa May has tried to hit back by umming and ahhing and saying,“I just get on and, er, actually make sure I’m delivering what people want. That’s not, er… that’s the job for any politician”

Kremlin on Trump's Call for Russia's G8 Return: We Are Focused on Other Formats
The summit will officially start Friday in the Canadian province of Quebec and run until Saturday. US President Trump is expected to leave the summit early to fly to Singapore, skipping the climate session. Russia announced its permanent withdrawal from the G8 in 2017; the group was thereafter renamed the G7. Other G7 members have expressed the mixed reaction to the Trump's call: while Canada opposed it, Macron, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, British Prime Minister Theresa May and new Italian premier Giuseppe Conte welcomed the move, with the latter saying that "it's in everyone's interest".

NATO is once again practicing for the worst
It is no secret that, looked at from a greater distance, the Western alliance is in deep trouble, maybe never more so than this weekend. The American president has used a Group of Seven meeting to stage a public fight with Canada and his European allies; he has set out, deliberately, to undermine Western trade. A part of the European political class is already asking whether Russia might be a better partner than the United States. For the foreseeable future, the news coming out about U.S.-European relations is going to be bad — maybe very bad.

He’s a Republican, of course. Meaning South Dakota state Rep. Michael Clark. On Monday, Clark, being presumably of sound mind and body, suggested on Facebook that maybe racial segregation wouldn’t be such a bad idea. A businessman, he wrote, “should have the opportunity to run his business the way he wants. If he wants to turn away people of color, that’s his choice.”
